Explore our music, explore our movements, and explore our culture. The music is thriving on every corner of this city. Feeling a bit lost? Here are a few awesome places for you! Let’s have some drinks and listen to the live music in Saigon!

Sax N Art Jazz Club

Living up to its name, the place is a small jazz paradise in this bustling city. Mr. Tran Manh Tuan, also the owner of the club, is one of the greatest saxophone musicians that we pleasurably have here, in Saigon. There are many great performances every night. Come early to save you a spot and enjoy the atmosphere.

Hard Rock Café

Talking about popularity, “Rock” is at the bottom 20% of words that are frequently used in this country. But worry not, this big guy “Hard Rock” is already there with us. To be honest, this chain is not the best but it is better than nothing. Good food, good music, and good drinks are what I’m sure you won’t miss whilst visiting this place.

Photo via dltechnologies.asia

Acoustic Bar

Acoustic performance is a hot trend recently, isn’t it? (Or at least within my knowledge, it is quite trendy here. Just kidding! Don’t be fooled by this place’s name. It has more than just acoustic sets, such as rock n’ roll nights, or occasionally, jazz or blues.

Photo via media.foody.vn

Mix and Paint Bar

Located right on the main street, this place is a must-check one for all the art admirers. Mix and Paint is a cultural venue bringing together different artists from graphic urban culture, pop culture and contemporary art. Live art performances and interesting workshops are held here frequently. If not, you can always come at any time in a day to enjoy the snacks and the place’s art gallery. You shouldn’t miss a chance to visit such a cool venue like Mix & Paint.

Yoko Cafe

Yoko is an extraordinary venue with a mix of both evening screenings and excellent performances from local and foreign musicians. The only downside seems to appear when you are allergic to cigarettes as the place allows smoking inside. Other than that, I have nothing to say about this place but praises: warm, cozy, and good music.

Seventeen Saloon

In an old style of western saloons, the place surely brings you stimulating memories. The whole bar is decorated with wooden features, where you will be met by cowboys and cowgirls. Moreover, they are among few good places left that offer rock music! If not, no worries. Seventeen Saloon offers the second stage with softer music. Let’s heat up our heart with music and liquor.

Photo via media-cdn.tripadvisor.com

Thi Bar

Feeling down but you are too lazy to wander too far off your hood? Check out this place. The bar is conveniently located inside the tourist downtown and constantly filled up with good music. This is a perfect location for friends to gather, for dancers to release their inner energy.

La Fenetre Soleil

La Fenetre Soleil is a hidden gem of this hectic city, whose morning camouflage is an amazing Indonesian restaurant. After 9:00 PM, the true essence of a nightclub arises. There are jazz nights, piano nights, jam sessions, poetic events, and much more outstanding live performances.

Indika Saigon

Indika Saigon is one of the places that feel like home at your first step inside. The place itself is a masterpiece of architecture. Each corner conveys a different story to tell. There is a perfect harmony of decorative furniture inside and the small garden outside. Choose your lovely spot to enjoy the night with good music, decent drinks, and delicious dishes.

Buddha Bar

Put aside all the controversy about its name, this bar is still a good stop. Actually, they are very famous among expats here in Saigon. Also, you should come here in happy hours (after 11 pm), since it offers cheap prices for many options including drinks and snacks. Moreover, the bar also offers leisure corners with board games for its customers. Yet sometimes it is not really a customer-oriented bar because some staff is not gentle and nice.

Vung Tau is a great stop for our journey but it is not the end, isn’t it? There’s no permanent stop for an adventurer. I used to be an adventurer like you, then I took an arrow in the knee. Thus I took a flight to a paradise island and lived there happily for the rest of my life. Just kidding, that whole story has just been made up in my head. However, I’ve experienced a place called Long Hai that could be such paradise I mentioned above. Why? To explain simply: solitude is bliss.

Long Hai – Secluded Private Beach

From a long time ago, Long Hai was well known as an attractive but remote resort area. It recently gains its fame from a few articles about its seclusion but in overall, the town is still less crowded than its nearby brothers. Tourist attractions are scarce but there are many resorts lying alongside the beach not only here in Long Hai, but also Bình Châu, Hồ Cốc, and Hồ Tràm.

I’ve been to Alma Oasis and An Hoa and they are absolutely ideal for a sloth-man like me. Every morning and night I swallowed a great deal of food and then I went swimming, relaxing on the shore and enjoying the sun. That was one of the rare cases which I offer those pools, beaches, and gyms a chance to function.

Besides fancy resorts, beach villas, and awesome beaches, let’s take a look at a few places of interest that you might want to check them out.

Dinh Co Temple

According to historical documents, the original temple was just a simple small shrine, built in the late 18th century to worship a young woman named Lê Thị Hồng. Local residents believe that she was a sacred goddess whose body is drifted to this Long Hai beach. They buried her and made her a small shrine at Co Son Hill. In 1930, Long Hai fishermen relocated the site up to Ky Van hill. In 1987, Dinh Co temple was rebuilt after a fire. In 1995, Dinh Co temple was recognized as the national historical and cultural relic. In 2006-2007, it was renovated due to degradation of building materials. Today, the construction of Dinh Co temple has a total area of over 1000 square meters with ancient architectural designs mixed with modern styles.

It is hard to find such a beautiful green palette like this place, Ngoc Xuong ecotourism site. You can take a seat in a wooden hut built next to a small stream and watch animals herds passing by while enjoying your coffee cup (or almighty coconut!). When I was there, a drink only cost about 15.000 VND and there was no entrance fee.

All these awesome ideas came from a candid and naive farmer whose name is Năm Ngọc. He used to run an orchard here but “got enough of it. I want to try something new.” Unless he started learning some capitalist’s tricks, the place would be still as pure as wild cows’ milk which is not heavily drained.

Minh Dam Guerilla Bases

In the area of Long Hai Townlet, there is Minh Dam Mountain whose length is 9 kilometers and altitude at about 350 meters. The whole mountain with its massive cave system was a menacing threat to France and United States’ soldiers back then since local militias captured the place and used it as an advantage point to ambush them. Initially, local residents called this mountain Thuy Van as the peak is usually embraced by clouds. In Vietnam Wars, this place was renamed Minh Dam in remembrance of two officers whose names are Bui Cong Minh – the secretary of Long Dien District Committee, and Mac Thanh Dam – the vice secretary. During the wartime of Vietnam against the United States, Minh Dam took a critical role as a supply point for Vietnam units and hence suffered sanguinary battles and many intense bombing waves. But those days are over. The mountain is once again replete with bright colored flowers. Minh Dam now becomes an enjoyable historical site for tourists and local residents to learn about the past wars.

Are you a vegetarian? My grandmother was a vegetarian. She was also an amazing vegan cook. Her food is always the best to me. That being said, there is no place like home but there are a few places almost like it that I will show you below. If you are not a vegetarian, no worries. Why not changing your flavors once in a while?

You may order vegan food using the word “chay” or “đồ ăn chay” (Literally: vegetarian food). But how do we pronounce that though? A way to say the word “chay” is to combine the first syllable of the word “chayote” and the vowel of the word “say”. And, “đồ ăn”, which means food, is “do” and the first syllable of “ankle”. Hope this could help you pronounce the full word correctly!

By the way, here are two tips when you speak Vietnamese, use just a little amount of air and do not compress the words when pronouncing.

Healthy Farm

You choose your favorite ingredients, Healthy Farm’s chefs make delicious noodle dishes out of them. Ingenious concept, isn’t it? That is what I thought when I first got here. There is a great variety of options for customers to pick including noodles, vegan meats, and vegetables. Moreover, the restaurant offers vegan burgers, ice creams, and many more good drinks. A breakfast or lunch here to me is an absolutely great idea.

Loving Hut Hoa Đăng Restaurant

Loving Hut is a vegan restaurant chain with more than 100 outlets in Asia, Europe, South America, North America, and Australia. Among the places I recommend here, this one is where a proper man in a suit and tie may get his proper full course dinner.

Phương Mai Vegan Restaurant

Don’t be fooled by the restaurant’s small size look! It offers a lovely atmosphere and an amazing menu. I once stumbled across this small shack and now I have to come back every (almost) week because of the delicious dishes. Moreover, this place has a small meditation room and a reading room with a few charity bookshelves. You can read, take any titles that you like or consider making donations to enrich it.

Liên Hương Vegan Restaurant

Lien Huong is a decent vegetarian restaurant in a quiet and comfortable setting that you should not miss when you are here in Saigon although it is quite an adventure to get here as the restaurant is located in an alley. However, it is really not that hard if you simply follow our map.

Tib Vegan Restaurant

Established in 1993, Tib Restaurant was among the pioneers in Vietnam to revive rustic Hue dishes such as Jellyfish noodle (Vietnamese: Bún giấm nuốc), Steamed rice pancake with shrimp in banana leaves (Vietnamese: Bánh nậm tôm), Romaine lettuce roll (Vietnamese: Cuốn diếp) into luxurious settings. One interesting point that helps Tib stands out from its competitors is that the restaurant mainly focuses on food made from fresh vegetables and fruits instead of offering fake flavors or vegan meats.

Besides the main courses, Tib also serves breakfast with coffee and snacks. Don’t forget to check it out!

There are two movements coexisting here: Modern and Classic. This is not so different from other parts of the city but it is the most conspicuous. By modern, I want to mention those fancy bistros and restaurants. And by classic, they are vintage ones or familiar holes-in-the-wall. Most of the fancy options reside in Thao Dien ward and its nearby neighborhood. However, if stepping outside the familiar zone, you may find many interests awaiting.

La Villa French Restaurant

To visit La Villa restaurant is to “enter a world of true fine dining.” You can either enjoy a spectacular lunch in its outdoor garden or step inside for a refined dining experience. And, to be honest, giving more praises here is just redundant. We have already known that France is awesome with a full course dinner. Before you go, to ensure everything, please consider making a reservation.

Mekong Merchant & MM Bistro

This location offers a vintage setting where many western food options are used to please the customers’ eyes plus appetites. Have you ever dreamt about eating a pizza in a tropical forest? It is here! Right here! Overall, food and service are great although it seems the bistro needs to hire more staffs. They have great corners with privacy that I’d love to dip into my books in an entire morning.

Miku Sushi & BBQ

What can a small restaurant that nestles behind Saigon Bridge have to offer? It is the light breeze from the nearby river which cools down the hot temperature of Saigon. It is the enticing sushi and flavored grilled meat. Moreover, this location is like a little hideout for those who do not accustom to bustling lifestyles.

Kokoïs – Cafe Bistro & Store

Kokoïs is a unique mixture of open space design and industrial style which seems quite impressive from the first glance. Its menu is filled with good options including food and drink whose prices are a little bit above average. The service is really good and the staff is attentive. In a nutshell, this is a good stop for a time of relaxation.

Let’s sit here and enjoy the flow of time with a sip of tea, shall we? Villa Royale not only offers bold-flavored teas but also many sweet desserts for an awesome tea time. Moreover, as suggested by the name, this whole place is replete with luxurious antiques. It sometimes reminds me times I spent with my grandma cleaning up her longcase clock. A warm pleasure for sure every time I drop by. You won’t be disappointed I am sure!

District 7, although being quite far from the center, has many great places that you should check out.

Artinus – 3D Art Gallery
Possessing more than 4000 square meters and hundreds of 3D artworks, Artinus 3D Art Gallery is probably one of the largest and the most interesting “museums” in Vietnam. The whole gallery is split into nine zones with different themes and different experiences such as Aqua Zone where you immerse yourself into the deep ocean with bizarre creatures; Masterpiece Zone where you may interact with characters or become the main one in popular paintings of Van Goth, Botticelli, and Michelangelo; Vietnam Zone where you can admire the most majestic nature picture and soar into the air alongside eagles, et cetera. Therefore, don’t forget to bring cameras with you!

Vietopia
“Vietopia is a small city for our kids’ dreams”, said a young father in a review about this place. At this center, your kids will participate in role-playing activities whereby they earn some Vidos (Money of Vietopia), which can be used to attend some games or purchase some cool stuffs there. There are more than 70 occupations with about 100 activities for your kids to choose such as news editor, electrical engineer, flight attendant, milk factory worker, et cetera. If your kids are older than 8, you can leave them to explore the city on their own. There are cafeteria, restaurants, coffee shops, and a shopping mart nearby. Otherwise, it seems to be the only downside that you, the parents, cannot join the games with your children and have to wait. But this waiting is worthwhile, isn’t it?

Please remember to have a look at Vietopia’s website to check whether the place opens or not on a specific day.

Crescent Lake Park & Starlight Bridge are two new popular spots of Saigon. After a long day at work, isn’t it the best to take a stroll in this lovely park? The park is located right next to a river so the air is always cool and fresh. On the weekends, the lights from the bridge come on and sometimes there are light and water shows which attract a lot of locals and tourists. Moreover, there is a grand flower festival being held here every Tet holiday.

South Saigon Park
This is a small, narrow but beautiful park which is surrounded by many coffee shops and restaurants. In the center, there is a long lake that meanders gently through the park. Take a stroll then sit down by the lake to enjoy this peaceful atmosphere.

Vung Tau, which takes just about two hours from Saigon, is one of the most ideal places to enjoy tropical beach atmospheres during your holiday. Here are a few notes to help you build you own plan.

You can visit some places of interest early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the blazing sun, especially Jesus Christ Statue, or Cannon Fort. Since those two places are located on mountains and the roads are crooked and rugged, going when the weather is cloudy will save you from unwanted sweats. I really mean it, save them.

There are better places for you to let them go. Bai Truoc (Front Beach), Bai Sau (Back Beach), Bai Dua, and Bai Dau Beach are the options that you can consider. Check out the post I wrote Must-Visit Places for more information. In short, Front Beach is the heart of this city where all activities converge. Back Beach and Thuy Van Street area are places where you would love to spend your nights. If you and your partners prefer quiet areas, there are Bai Dau and Bai Dua which are less crowded than other beaches but are still close to the main area. They are small beaches with a lot of rocks, hence it is less favorable.

How about seafood and where are the restaurants that can fulfill your appetite? Check out my article about What and Where to Eat in Vung Tau. There are many great places around Front and Back Beach area. Tourist scams and rip-offs, sadly, still exist in Vung Tau. Therefore, for your own sake, I advise you to avoid peddlers unless you are good at bargaining and you know the prices well. Therefore, the strategy is to stick to such places that are big and crowded. Moreover, one small tip for you to note down is “always double-check”, especially when you pay and before you leave somewhere.

About transportation, hydrofoil has a limited timetable in which the earliest trip is at 08:00 AM and the last hydrofoil departs at 04:00 PM. Therefore, I don’t recommend using hydrofoil for a 1-day trip to Vung Tau. If you drive there by yourself, consider checking our guide How to Get to Vung Tau.

These are a few simple notes. Let us know if you have any more questions. Below is an example for trip planners.

Hoang Gia Villa

This is one of the most beautiful villa in Vung Tau situated on Bai Dau Beach. The villa possesses an amazing sea view and the beach is so close that can be described as “5 feet to the beach”. You just need to open your bedroom’s windows, the vast sea lies before your eyes. Just lying on your bed, you may enjoy the most picturesque sunrise and sunset.

Resorts & Hotels

Ha Long Street (“Bai Dua” Beach)

If you like quiet and less crowded places, you should consider many beautiful resorts on this street. There are a few restaurants and coffee shops nearby for a breakfast and lunch but you may need to take a cab or motorbike taxi (xe om) to downtown streets at night to enjoy the vivid Vung Tau, which seems to be the only downside if you stay here.

“Some sleep at night. Some go out and find
their breakfast, not for their stomachs,
but their souls.
It’s not your fault when you did chose
the tempest. Not roaming recklessly,
just bein’ lost.” – Lam Le.
No worries, here we are, to shed a light! I mean, with this guide, to help you guys! Vung Tau city at night is full of mysteries and attractiveness. They are waiting for you.

Fang Pub

Fang Pub Vung Tau is a branch of a famous brand in Saigon. If you feel so bored and do not know where to go, let’s get here. Staffs and other people here are very friendly since when it comes to music, there is no border nor boundary. Everyone dances or sings along to the good tunes. The pub has live performances almost every night. Don’t hesitate! This place surely knows how to bright your boring night.

Opening hours: 10:00 AM – 1:00 AM
Address: #03 Ly Tu Trong St, ward 1, Vung Tau, Ba Ria – Vung Tau, Vietnam.
Website: https://www.facebook.com/FangPubVT/

Black Pearl Bar Vung tau

This one is a great bar that has awesome entertainment and pirate decoration style. The bar plays a wide variety of music genres here but occasionally, there are bands playing rock and metal music. They really know how to throw a great party. However, there are a few complaints about their music and drink prices. The music volume is sometimes too loud and beer price is ridiculously expensive. Drinking something before getting here might be a good idea.

Prices: 200.000 – 500.000 VND / 1 person

Gazebo Beach Front Lounge & Cafe

Being one of the coolest lounges in Vung Tau with a magnificent sea view and the stage of Hip Hop and Deep House music, this is a golden location in Vung Tau. They serve coffee and drink from the morning until evening then the real show begins at seven o’clock. The price is a bit high but if you compare with the quality and the scenery, that is totally acceptable. If I have to pick one favorite lounge or bar in Vung Tau, it’s hard to come up with a good decision but Gazebo is definitely worth considering.

Vung Tau Beach Club

Vung Tau Beach Club is not only a great bar to get relaxed by the beach but also a watersports venue, a kitesurfing school which is situated on the Back Beach in Vung Tau. It is a valuable gem but unfortunately, not many tourists hear about this place. Beach Club has a great spirit and alcohol list, great music and totally relaxed atmosphere which is so unique and cannot be found elsewhere.

A perfect street for all the food lovers out there lies right here waiting for the one! Yes, it is you! There are many options for you to spend a few bucks and coins (and receive a full stomach that you can’t even walk back to the hotel.) You may get all kinds of food here but mostly they are seafood such as snails, shrimps, octopuses, and fishes. There is grilled octopus with okras for 70K per serving. There are wok-fried mud crab claws with tamarind dish which is 70K for 10 claws. There is grilled mussel sold for 10K each. There is stir fried razor clams dish which is about 60K each. And there are countless amazing dishes more that are waiting for you! Sounds interesting already, doesn’t it?

Cây Bàng Restaurant

Cay Bang Restaurant is a reliable brand from the get-go of Vung Tau. It is built right on windy Bãi Dâu beach. And to be honest, if you sit here at the right time with the good food, there is nothing much to complain.

What & Where to Eat In Ba Ria City

Ba Ria City rarely has anything in common with its sibling, Vung Tau City, across the Co May river. It is less famous, less bustling, and less noisy. Sometimes we do want to explore peaceful parts of this Earth, don’t we? And while you’re busy exploring, here are a few hot spots left that may fulfill your appetite.
