Vietnam is a nation known for many things: beating the French, beating the Americans and… really weird food. Many of the country’s delicacies can be considered downright freakish or even disgusting to some.

TRỨNG VỊT LỘN (BALUT)

Also found in the Phillippines, where it is known as balut, the trứng vịt lộn is a macabre yet guiltily delicious twist on a duck egg. The egg is left to gestate until an embryo has been formed, then hard-boiled, creating a boiled egg with chunks of a half-developed duckling. It is as gory as you would expect, and more flavorful than any other egg you will ever have. A trứng vịt lộn goes great with some rau răm (Vietnamese coriander) and salt and pepper. Classic.

Photo via sputniknews

Besides trứng vịt lộn, there is also a dish which is quite similar with also a similar name “trứng cút lộn”. Actually, the two are not so different, except the trứng cút lộn is a mini version of the trứng vịt lộn. However, trứng cút lộn is way easier to eat because the egg is quite small with the size of a small pebble. Unlike trứng vịt lộn, trứng cút lộn can be cooked in many ways to create such tempting dishes besides boiled cút lộn such as “cút lộn xào me” (stir-fried cút lộn with tamarind) eaten with bread, which is adored by many foodlovers.

Photo via bizweb

THỊT CHÓ (DOG MEAT)

Dog meat. Yes, dog meat. The controversial protein is found on drinking tables everywhere in Vietnam, particularly in the North, where it is deemed as a delicacy. Most commonly paired with mam tom (fermented shrimp paste) – another bizarre food we will cover later – dog meat is described as having the texture of pork, but the taste of chicken. Some call it unethical and cruel, while others swear on this meat.

Thịt chó mắm tôm. Photo via i.ytimg

ĐUÔNG DỪA (COCONUT WORM)

Insects are odd enough as food if you think about it, but the king of odd insects has to be the coconut worm. Found on coconut trees in relatively low numbers, the coconut worm is a specialty not for the faint-hearted. The correct way to serve them? Raw, swimming in a large bowl of fish sauce and chili peppers – as you let it soak in the flavor of the spicy fish sauce. For whoever eats this for the first time, đuông dừa is the worst nightmare. However, after the first bite, most people say it tastes like coconut! Maybe that is why the creature is called coconut worm.

Swimming coconut worms. Photo via bazantravel

TIẾT CANH (BLOOD PUDDING)

Another bloody favorite of the drinking crowd, blood pudding is made from blood – most commonly duck blood – as well as other ingredients such as innards, fish sauce and crushed peanuts. Described as having the texture of pizza, tiết canh is said to be reinvigorating and extremely taste. Beware though – poorly prepared blood pudding has led to cases of blood contimation, cholera and even death! Somehow, strangely, it is still the favorite dish of most middle-age to old people.

Blood pudding – Bloody as its name. Photo via blogspot.com

SẦU RIÊNG (DURIAN)

Perhaps the most divisive fruit in Asia, the durian is a fruit that packs a strong taste and an ever stronger scent. Banned from most public premises in Southeast Asia due to its pervasive smell, the durian’s custard-ish flavor is strangely addictive, if not slightly overpowering. Like most of the foods on this list, it is incredibly controversial: some people will defend the durian to death, while others would not touch it with a five foot pole.

Photo via product.hstatic.net

NHỘNG (SILKWORM PUPAE)

Another member of the creepy crawly critters family, “con nhộng” is a creamy delicacy most popular in Central Vietnam, though it can be found pretty much anywhere. The pupae is again another insect that is beloved by the drinking crowd, whether it is sauteed with piper leaves or fried. On the first glance, the silkworm pupae looks nothing different from a skinny coconut worm. However, besides the different taste, the nhộng is “luckily” cooked. There are many dishes of nhộng that Vietnamese think of and it is especially various in the mountainous areas. However, the most typical nhộng dish is stir-fried silkworm pupae.

Photo via i.ytimg

MẮM TÔM (FERMENTED SHRIMP PASTE)

More of a condiment than an actual food, the infamous mắm tôm still manages to find itself on the list due to its pure absurdity. Tiny shrimp is fermented for 6 months to a year in a special process until it decomposes and creates a strong-smelling paste. The scent is extremely pungent, and so is the taste. It’s a key component of many popular dishes, such as thịt chó mắm tom (dog meat with fermented shrimp paste) or bún đậu mắm tôm (bean curd noodles with shrimp paste). You will either hate it, or be addicted to it.

Saigon is a melting pot gathering all the things from different cultures and regions, and it is a melting pot in the literal sense. So the denizens of Saigon have come up with a couple of drinks to beat the year-round heat. Here are the most popular beverages in the city.

1. Iced Tea (Trà Đá)

The ubiquitous, cheap, and refreshing beverage is particularly popular in Saigon, where the heat and humidity are taxing on anyone. Take a strongly brewed pot of tea, add a boatload of water and a few slabs of ice, and voila! A jug of the finest iced tea the city has to offer. You can catch motorbike taxis, deliverymen or simply anyone on the sidewalk gulping it down by the pitcher. The British have not got anything on the Saigonese on this one.

Photo via image.vtc.vn | A garbage recycler enjoys free trà đá from a roadside tank.

2. Iced Milk Coffee (Cà Phê Sữa Đá)

Move over Starbucks, there is a new king in town. Or is it the old king? It doesn’t matter.Ca Phe Sua Da is still a marvelous coffee either way. Four syllables, one drink. The deceptively simple yet exquisite coffee is an art form in itself, as different vendors; from the roadside stalls to the highest of the high-end franchises have different styles for it. The strong coffee blends well with the decadent condensed milk, and the ice lightens the taste. And the result? A creamy, sweet coffee with just the right amount of bitterness to it – and a drink loved by millions, whether expats or locals. Find the best places for Saigon Cà Phê Sữa Đá here

Photo via znews-photo-td.zadn.vn

3. Fresh Coconut Juice (Nước dừa)

Coconut juice – a new craze in healthy drinks apparently – has been popular in Saigon for decades. The large outer shell of the coconut is cleaved off into a more convenient shape, and then the coconuts are chilled over ice until served. The fresh juice inside is light, yet leaves behind a salty aftertaste that lingers ever so lightly on your tongue, tickling your taste buds. Wanna make it even better? A squeeze of kumquat juice (dừa tắc). It is a refreshing and delicious beverage for those hot summer days.

Photo via sohanews.sohacdn.com

4. Beer

The Vietnamese love their alcoholic beverages; the Saigonese even more so. The term “di nhậu”, which means have a drink, carries a different connotation here. It is a tribal gathering of sorts, where men (and often women too) drink away their troubles with their tables full of food, and their mugs full of beer. Locally produced brands such as 333, Saigon Red or Saigon Special are described as lighter and more lager-ish; while foreign beers such as Heineken and Sapporo are stronger and favored by the local drinkers. Go out and invite your Vietnamese friends or colleagues to ‘đi nhậu’. It is one heck of an experience for anyone.

Photo via brandsvietnam.com

5. Smoothies

Southern Vietnam has always been blessed with tons of fresh tropical fruits, but sometimes run-of-the-mill fruit can be a bit boring. Try some smoothies. A decadent concoction of fruits such as the soursop, the papaya, or the mango, sweetened condensed milk (with or without sugar) and ice, the Saigonese smoothie is airy yet perfectly sweet, like cotton candy. You can see locals slurping down the drink at roadside stalls or small cafes, looking to beat the summer heat.

Photo via food.fnr.sndimg.com

6. Sugarcane Juice

Sounds numbingly sweet! Sugarcane juice – the juice from which your sugar comes from? Well, no. The people of Saigon have managed to turn this nectar into a thirst-quenching beverage. Sugarcanes are passed through a squeezer that looks similar to an old-fashioned wringer. The sugarcane juice is then combined with the juice of the kumquat, a citrus fruit similar to a Clementine. The resulting blend is sweet, yet light and slightly citrusy on the tongue as you taste it. Pour into a cup filled with ice, and there you have it, a delicious drink for the humid afternoons of the city.

Photo via manhphat.vn

Photo via caobangedu.vn

7. Milk Tea (Trà Sữa)

Milk + Tea = Milktea. A simple enough equation, right? Somehow, Vietnamese youths have managed to turn this once-straightforward drink into an offering of deliciously chaotic proportions. From the basic black tea with milk to a milk foam-smothered creation, sometimes filled with the most delightful of tapioca pearls like bubble tea, Saigon has got it all. You will never go far these days without running into a milk tea shop, whether it is a streetside stall run by a couple of teenagers ,or the posh and jam-packed stores of large franchises like Gong Cha, Phuc Long or Bobapop. And for good reason: the thing is addictive. One sip, and we guarantee, you will find yourself searching for a milk tea like a druggie searching for crack.

Photo via cafef.vcmedia.vn

Photo via vietnammm.com

8. Xá Xị – Sá Xị

Xa Xi, or sarsaparilla, is a locally-made soft drink that will blow your taste buds away. Made from the sarsaparilla tree, xa xi has a creamy sweet taste that is reminiscent of American root beer – leading to some calling it Vietnamese root beer. Perhaps the most memorable thing about xa xi is its sweetness: there is a very striking bite to it that is noticeable as soon as you take a sip. It is one of those things where people either love it to death or hate. Some people think it is like Coke, but some do not. You just have to try it by yourself in almost all convenience stores!

Photo via thuonghieuvietnoitieng.vn

9. Ginseng Drink (Nước Sâm)

Nước Sâm is a perfect drink for sunny days. It has no ginseng, but it usually consists of local herbal ingredients like nettle leaves, spiky cilantro, sugar cane, dried longan, corn silk, roasted water chestnuts, grassroots, etc. You might find it on lots of streets including Cach Mang Thang Tam street. Also, you can make it at home on your own by finding these ingredients in Hai Thuong Lan Ong street, District 5.

The Mid-Autumn Festival (or Trung Thu) is right around the corner, and it is quite a big deal here in Vietnam. One of the most special things about the Festival is its flagship food, the mooncake. You may have noticed large stalls set up around the city on so many street corners and pavements, selling these mooncakes by the dozens

So what exactly is a mooncake?

THE BASICS

A mooncake is a pastry product, usually consisting of a thin outer crust of pastry, and an inner filling. No one really knows when the mooncake originated, but it has been intrinsically linked to the Mid-Autumn Festival for a very long time, so much so that it has become a central part of the festival experience.

Photo via shanghaidaily

THE CRUST

For a banh deo – bánh dẻo (or sticky mooncake), the outer crust is made using cooked glutinous rice flour, golden syrup, and vanilla. This mixture is actually cooked beforehand, and as such is edible immediately. For a banh nuong – bánh nướng(baked moon cake), the process is quite different. The crust is made from rice flour, golden syrup, and vegetable oil. This pastry layer is then placed over the filling, and baked until it is nice and brown.

Photo via blog.beemart.vn

Photo via images.thegioivanhoa.com.vn/

THE FILLINGS

Time flies. Fillings of the cake also got changed. Contrary to the crust, which had changed little over time, the fillings have evolved from simple to sophisticated. The basic fillings include lotus seed paste (nhân hạt sen), green bean paste (nhân đậu xanh), or mixed filling made from caramelized pork fat, Chinese sausages, assorted nuts and other ingredients (nhân thập cẩm). Over the years, manufacturers have caught on trends and created increasingly complex flavors. It is not difficult to find flavors such as roast chicken, green tea and blueberry for sale these days.

Photo via agiadinh.net

Some mooncake makers have even gone further and created new versions that differ greatly from a traditional mooncake. Jell-O moon cakes, ice cream moon cakes, mille feuille (thousand layers) moon cakes are just some of the creations found on the market, putting a new twist on an age-old classic.

Photo via craftpassion.com

ENJOYING A MOON CAKE

Mooncakes are generally sweet. Really sweet. So sweet that you will become sick of it after anything more than a few bites. This is because most mooncakes are made without preservatives, and as such has to be balanced with lots of sugar and oil.

Photo via dantricdn.com

So how do you enjoy a moon cake? With some nice tea, of course. Jasmine tea or chamomile tea are the favorites, but any light tea would pair nicely with mooncakes.

Amidst the cold and unforgiving concrete jungle that is Saigon, there’s still love if you look hard enough. Whether you’re looking for romance, or spicing things up with a special someone, we’ve got you covered. Here are some ideas to help you out – these are a couple of the most romantic places in Saigon.

Anh Sao Bridge (Cầu Ánh Sao)

Decorated with thousands upon thousands of LEDs, Cau Anh Sao is a wonderful place to bring your special one along. Stroll among the ever-changing colors and the water fountains surrounding the bridge, and indulge in an atmosphere only seen in Korean dramas. It doesn’t matter if you’re on a first date or getting engaged, Cau Anh Sao is a perfect destination for you and your partner.

Photo via cms.hallovietnam.vn:8080

Address: District 7

Saigon Cruise Ship

Have a delectable meal on the Saigon Cruise Ship, as it slowly passes the Bach Dang River. Let the cool breezy air hit you, and mellow classical music serenade both of you as the warmth from your hearts settle. Simply delightful. (Tip: Always choose the top deck, as the two bottom decks are too loud and chaotic for any romance)

Photo via citypassguide.com

Address: Bach Dang Wharf, Ton Duc Thang Street, District 1

Turtle Lake (Hồ Con Rùa)

Ho Con Rua – or Turtle Lake – is an artificial lake in the heart of the city. Well, was – it’s been drained, leaving behind a shallow pond of sorts. You might think that such a location is unsuitable for romance, but alas, you have made a mistake. Come here in the evening, and join the hordes of young Vietnamese couples enjoying an intimate conversation over some banh trang nuong – Vietnamese pizza, whilst being surrounded by blazing motorbike horns. It’s a quintessentially Saigon experience.

Address: District 3

Notre Dame Cathedral

The younger sibling of the famous Notre Dame in Paris, the Notre Dame in Saigon is pretty impressive in itself. A beautiful brick cathedral, the Notre Dame is often used as a backdrop for lovers taking their pictures, or even married couples who get their wedding photos taken here. Hold each other’s hand as you watch the pigeons soar from the little park in front of the cathedral, or come inside and marvel at the colonial architecture masterpiece.

Photo via media.foody.vn

Address: 1 Commune de Paris, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1

C’est Moi Café

One of the very few cafés left in this city that still retains a quiet charm to it, C’est Moi is a French-influenced romantic hotspot. Cozy up with an amour here, savour the fine classical music, and enjoy Parisian coffee and pastries. The food and drinks are super nice, and while the price is a little bit steep, you get what you pay for. C’est Moi is a little hideaway, for those of you tired of the loud metropolis.

Photo via 4.bp.blogspot.com

Address: 126F Phan Dang Luu Str., Ward 3, Phu Nhuan District

Trois Gourmands

The French sure know their romance. Situated in a quiet villa in District 2, Trois Gourmands delivers on all fronts. A romantic location, exquisite French-Indochinese fusion cuisine – with dishes such as foie gras spring rolls, lamb shoulder or sautéed beef with truffles – and a fine selection of wine and cheeses to accompany your meals will make the dining experience at Trois Gourmands heavenly. Book a romantic candlelit dinner with your loved one, or choose to dine amidst the stars. The price is rather expensive, but again, you get what you pay for.

Address: 39 Tran Ngoc Dien Str., Thao Dien Ward, District 2

Ho Chi Minh City Opera House

Ah, now we’re talking about the highlife. Hosting events such as concerts, plays, operas and orchestral performances, the Opera House is a wonderful night out for a couple. (Inquire their website for any future dates) Sit back, and marvel at a splendid show. And if you’re not in the mood to pay top money for a show, there’s a stall that sells peach tea for only 15 000VND near the Opera House – so grab a tea or two, and mingle in the crowd. Whatever you choose to do, you’ll definitely enjoy it.

Saigon Saigon Bar

A timeless classic for those looking to impress their beau, Saigon Saigon’s colonialistic influences and inviting atmosphere is perfect for couples. Find yourself an intimate spot in the corner, or take a seat in the rooftop courtyard overlooking bustling Lam Son Square. Live music begins from 9 pm, and Saigon Saigon has a fine selection of cocktails, beers, and liquors, as well as an extensive dining menu.

Share a delightfully luscious Bloody Mary, or the sultry and aptly-named Sex on the Beach, and let go of your inhibitions. Who knows what will come?

Photo via d1v471jzilqnl0.cloudfront.net

Address: 19 Lam Son Square, Ward 5, District 1

Chieu Cafe

Trinh Cong Son’s love songs have long transcended the realm of a simple melody – they have become something entirely different, something that evokes deep, raw emotions that are best left untouched. And what better way to bask in the purity of such emotions, especially with someone you love, than over a cup of coffee? Come to Chieu, a quaint little cafe tucked inside an alleyway on Cao Thang. Founded in 1966, the humble cafe has been heralded as a haven for Trinh lovers ever since. Everything here is a reminder of the good old days, from the wooden walls to the antique coffee cups. Sit on one of the old-timey chairs, listen to Trinh Cong Son melodies over the gramophone, and feel the ambiance surround you.

Rooftop Pool Bar at Hotel des Arts Saigon

If you want to have a great time with your partner in a romantic bar, you had better go to the Rooftop Pool Bar. It is a fantastic bar lying up on the roof of the Hotel des Arts Saigon. This destination has not only a large swimming pool but it also offers all the good cocktails and light snacks along with the lively vibes coming from the lounge music and spectacular views of the city.

#1. Ly Tu Trong Apartment Complex

It’s rather surprising that despite its location in the heart of Saigon, Ly Tu Trong Apartment Complex can still keep its quiet and colonial charm – the elevator is the original one from the French colonial period, the type of elevator you only see in movies. The home of many cafes (Cong and Loft being two local favorites), eateries (most notably Bong Cai Xanh - a lovely cafe/diner with a mean lunch menu), art galleries, a cookery center, and multiple shops, the complex is a little alcove of peace amidst the rapidly changing landscape of the city centre.

Inspired by Japanese author Kobayashi Sosaku’s book Totto-chan by the window, Toa Tau is a creative learning hub for people of all ages – creative being the main word. Toa Tau hosts classes and workshops teaching art, music, creative writing, dancing, and so on. Yet, the main purpose is not to teach you to draw or write, or dance better; but rather teach you how to understand yourself, understand everything around you, and express yourself through a creative medium. It’s an escape, a place to surround yourself with creativity and positivity. Courses are limited, so book before you come there.

Here, meet ethnic Chinese vendors selling you silver earrings and dried fruit, sit down at one of the stalls in the basement and enjoy a bowl of mi xa xiu (noodles with braised pork), listen to the raucous conversations in Yue and Teochew Chinese, or perhaps just stroll through the kiosks and breathe in the air of excitement. The bar has some pretty nice views, most notably of the quaint stone-clad National Bank of Vietnam. With mellow jazz playing, and live band performances almost every night, you’ll soon forget you’re in Saigon and be teleported back to Prohibition-era Chicago. A nice daiquiri, craft beer, or perhaps good ol’ whiskey on the rocks would only further your experience with Snuffbox.

#8. Saigon Superbowl

The first ever shopping mall in Saigon, opened back in 1996, Saigon Superbowl has since been eclipsed by many trendier and newer malls. However, you don’t come here for the shopping - though there are a decent selection of outlets here. You come here for the bowling. The first, and best, bowling alley in the city, it is packed with locals (and a few tourists) looking to have some fun. Prices are a little steep, but it’s definitely worth it. The selection of Korean and Singaporean restaurants are also worth checking out, as well as the KFC on the first floor - Vietnam’s first ever fast food restaurant.
#9. Bia Hoi Huy Beo

Not so much “hidden” as “tourists somehow manage to overlook the place”, Bia Hoi Huy Beo is a decidedly Vietnamese establishment. Bia Hoi is a cheap, lager-like beer that is brewed fresh every day, very similar to Czech Pilsner. More of a beer-flavored water than beer, it’s perfect for those looking to down a few jugs and escape the heat of this city. The food here is decent, with a selection of appetizers and entrees to accompany your alcoholic beverage. Look out for red-faced middle-aged Vietnamese men, going through the tables eliciting toasts, a good old sign of Viet hospitality. (The local version of ‘Cheers!’ is ‘Mot, hai, ba, dzo!’, pronounced ‘Moht, high, bah, yow!’. Keep that in mind. You’ll impress many a local with it.)

Amusement parks are a fun escape from the rat race – giant crowds, long queues for any games and rides and absurdly priced concessions. Oh, who am I kidding? Still, a trip to any amusement park is a fun day out for a family, a couple or anyone looking for a little excitement. There is a plethora of parks in Saigon, and here are the best ones I would recommend.

1. Dam Sen Amusement Park

Long heralded as the best amusement park in Saigon, Dam Sen (Đầm Sen) is filled to the brim with fun games, arcades, and rides (and people too). With a large number of attractions, including an ice castle, an aquarium, and multiple roller coasters, it is guaranteed to be an exciting day out for anyone. There are also concerts, comedy shows and a variety of shows hosted here frequently, so do check out their website for any upcoming events.

Address: 3 Hoa Binh Str., Ward 3, District 11
Opening hours: Mon-Fri 7:30AM – 6:00PM, Sat-Sun 7:30AM – 9:00PM

2. Dam Sen Water Park

Yes, technically part of the same complex, but there is so much to do at Dam Sen Water Park that it will be unfair to lump it in with the amusement, or “dry” park as the Vietnamese call it. Exciting attractions such as the Kamikaze, a high-speed 19-meter tall slide, or the Tornado, an 119-meter-long river course that offers a thrilling experience are just some of the high-adrenaline games available here. Dam Sen Water Park is definitely worth your money, especially if you’re an adrenaline junkie, or someone bored of the standard amusement park fare.

3. Suoi Tien Theme Park

About 20 kilometers away from the city, Suoi Tien Theme Park is extremely popular. Whether it is a weekday or weekend, it is always jam-packed – a true testament to the popularity of the park. Over 70 unique games, rides, and attractions, some of which include quad bike riding, rock climbing, bungee jumping as well as a number of thrill rides and a kid zone, as well as Tien Dong Beach – an enormous artificial beach that makes Suoi Tien a destination fit for the whole family.

4. Tho Trang Amusement Park

Tho Trang is primarily aimed at kids, but that does not stop anyone from having fun here. With loads of games and arcades – including favorites such as darts, BB guns, claw machines and many others – Tho Trang is as nostalgic as it gets. Oh, and did I also mention that it has perhaps the best food court of any amusement park in Saigon? Dig in a plate of banh beo, a decadent smoothie, some delicious ice cream or just a warm cup of coffee. It is absolutely wonderful, and also somehow really romantic for couples

Here, kids get to live their fantasies and try their hand at multiple jobs, such as being a policeman, firefighter, fashion model, etc. or as a worker at a dairy factory, water bottling plant or bakery (Crippling workplace-related stress not included). It is a popular destination for children of all ages, so if you have a child, a nephew or niece, or simply look to host a fun day out for some children, definitely consider KizCiti.

7. SnowTown

For those of you craving some snow, SnowTown is, well, a town full of snow. It is a new amusement park based in District 2, with a vintage European design. The main draw here is snow, obviously – in such a humid city like Saigon, any sort of coolness is welcomed. Some fun winter activities such as skiing or snowball fights are available, and there is also a crafts center where kids can learn to make fun toys from recycled materials. It is a nifty little escape from the heat of the city.

8. Thao Cam Vien

Thao Cam Vien – the Saigon Botanical Gardens, or simply The Zoo – Sở Thú as generations of inhabitants have called it, is not an amusement park per se, but it’s amusing enough to claim a spot on this list. Built in 1864 by French colonialists, the Gardens have now amassed over 590 animals belonging to 125 different species, including non-native breeds such as the jaguar, Bengali tiger, or the lemur. There are also over 260 species of flora to be found here, including 23 native orchids and 34 types of bonsai. Popular attractions such as the tigers, the elephants – who will gladly eat your sugarcane – and the children’s zoo, with kids (baby goats) and lambs (baby sheep) running around are must-stops for anyone. Popular with children and adults alike, the Botanical Gardens are a great way to spend a lazy afternoon, even if you are not remotely interested in botany or zoology.

With its status as a major regional hub, it is very easy to travel to Cần Thơ from other large cities. Of course, you should always plan your trip ahead of time to be sure about everything. Here are some ways to get to Cần Thơ.

1. By bus

Most major cities such as Hồ Chí Minh City or Hà Nội will have regular bus lines from large operators. For smaller cities, there might also be minibus trips. Assuming you are departing from Hồ Chí Minh City, Thành Bưởi, Phương Trang and Mai Linh are major operators all offering daily bus services to and from Cần Thơ, and a typical trip is around 3 hours. Go to the Western Bus Station (Bến Xe Miền Tây) and look for the offices of Thành Bưởi, Phương Trang or Mai Linh. Alternatively, get to the main offices and buy a ticket, from which point a shuttle bus will take you to Bến Xe Miền Đông. You can also book a ticket over the phone, like many locals do, though the line operators’ English can be a little bit hard to comprehend. Do bring some headphones and a soft blanket, as Vietnamese buses are often chilly and noisy.

Address:

Bến Xe Miền Tây: 395 Kinh Dương Vương Street, An Lạc Ward, Bình Tân District
Thành Bưởi’s Office: 266-268 Lê Hồng Phong Street, Ward 4, District 5
Phương Trang’s Office: 272 Đề Thám Street, District 1
Mai Linh’s Office: 262 Đinh Bộ Lĩnh Street, Ward 26, Bình Thạnh District

Telephone:
Thành Bưởi: (+84) 838 339 242
Phương Trang: 1900 6067
Mai Linh: (+84) 839 393 939

2. By car or motorbike

The highway system of Vietnam, while nowhere near as good as neighboring countries, is still pretty decent. Therefore, a trip on your own bike or car is a feasible option when you travel to Cần Thơ. A one-way trip from Hồ Chí Minh City usually takes about 4 hours. There are also toll fees to pay when travelling by car. If you are interested in renting a car or motorbike for the journey, Tigit Motorbikes and VN Rent-a-Car are two providers of rental services you should look into.

Address:

Tigit Motorbikes: Office 36-37, Floor G, 360K Bến Vân Đồn Street, Ward 1, District 4

3. By air

You can travel by air to Cần Thơ, if necessary. Trà Nóc International Airport is connected to Hà Nội, Phú Quốc, Côn Đảo and Đà Nẵng. Vietnam Airlines, VASCO and Vietjet Air all offer daily flights to Cần Thơ. Vietnam Airlines offer routes from Hà Nội and Phú Quốc, VASCO has a route from Côn Đảo, and the Đà Nẵng route is operated by VietJet Air. Seats are wanted though, so you should definitely book ahead!

Though the nightlife scene in Can Tho is less bustling than that of Ho Chi Minh City, there is still a lot you can do once the sun sets here. Here are some recommended activities for those looking to have fun in the late hours.

1. Have a drink by the quay

Spend a couple of hours like a local and enjoy fresh fruit smoothies or a traditional Vietnamese coffee. Sit back, relax and watch the hustle and bustle of Ninh Kieu Quay unfold before you. Amavo Cafe is a modern, sleek cafe with a view of the quay, while Kim Tho Cafe offers a rooftop view of the city centre.

Address:
Amavo Cafe: 16 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, Ninh Kieu District
Kim Tho Cafe: 1 Ngo Gia Tu Street, Ninh Kieu District

Amavo Caffe at night – Photo found on the interne

2. Visit the night market

Night markets are a great place to buy some interesting souvenirs, as well as to experience the time-honored tradition of haggling. They also contain some of the most delicious (and cheapest!) food stalls around, so if you are looking for a taste of Southern Vietnamese cuisine, the night markets have that covered. A few markets worth a visit are the New Can Tho Market, An Binh Market, as well as the stalls on 30/4 Street and Mau Than Street.

Address:
New Can Tho Market: Hai Ba Trung Street, Tan An Ward, Ninh Kieu District

3. Mingle with the locals

Can Tho is full of friendly people, so why not go out and have some fun? Bars and pubs are not common here, but are all high-quality establishments. For a nightclubbing experience, XK Club, King Beer Club and V18 Club are jam-packed with young locals, while Iris Sky Bar has some delicious mixed drinks wịth a touch of Mekong Delta flavors, and arguably the best view of the city.

Address:
XK Club: 108B Tran Van Kheo Street, Ninh Kieu District
V18 Club: 18 Hai Ba Trung Street, Ninh Kieu District
Iris Sky Bar: Rooftop, Iris Hotel, 224 30/4 Street, Xuan Khanh Ward, Ninh Kieu District

Glowing lights at Iris Sky Bar – Photo fonud on the interenet

4. Take a dinner cruise

Let a sampan take you around Can Tho as you take in the sights of the bright lights and beautiful colors of this city. Then, stop at Sao Hom Restaurant, one of the most famous dining establishment in Can Tho for an authentic Vietnamese dinner. A wonderful experience all around, and definitely something you must try when you are in this city.

5. Go on a food tour

Can Tho is a city filled with good food, a place where the old intertwines with the new. What better way to explore it than on the back of a motorbike? Hop on a bike with a local guide as they take you around some of the city centre’s hidden street food gems, from fresh nem nuong to local beer and more. Guaranteed to satisfy you in every way. (It’s also super cheap, so the cost isn’t a problem)
