Explore our music, explore our movements, and explore our culture. The music is thriving on every corner of this city. Feeling a bit lost? Here are a few awesome places for you! Let’s have some drinks and listen to the live music in Saigon!

Sax N Art Jazz Club

Living up to its name, the place is a small jazz paradise in this bustling city. Mr. Tran Manh Tuan, also the owner of the club, is one of the greatest saxophone musicians that we pleasurably have here, in Saigon. There are many great performances every night. Come early to save you a spot and enjoy the atmosphere.

Photo via media-cdn.tripadvisor.com

Website: Sax n’ Art Facebook Page

Hard Rock Café

Talking about popularity, “Rock” is at the bottom 20% of words that are frequently used in this country. But worry not, this big guy “Hard Rock” is already there with us. To be honest, this chain is not the best but it is better than nothing. Good food, good music, and good drinks are what I’m sure you won’t miss whilst visiting this place.

Photo via dltechnologies.asia

Acoustic Bar

Acoustic performance is a hot trend recently, isn’t it? (Or at least within my knowledge, it is quite trendy here. Just kidding! Don’t be fooled by this place’s name. It has more than just acoustic sets, such as rock n’ roll nights, or occasionally, jazz or blues.

Mix and Paint Bar

Located right on the main street, this place is a must-check one for all the art admirers. Mix and Paint is a cultural venue bringing together different artists from graphic urban culture, pop culture and contemporary art. Live art performances and interesting workshops are held here frequently. If not, you can always come at any time in a day to enjoy the snacks and the place’s art gallery. You shouldn’t miss a chance to visit such a cool venue like Mix & Paint.

Yoko Cafe

Yoko is an extraordinary venue with a mix of both evening screenings and excellent performances from local and foreign musicians. The only downside seems to appear when you are allergic to cigarettes as the place allows smoking inside. Other than that, I have nothing to say about this place but praises: warm, cozy, and good music.

Seventeen Saloon

In an old style of western saloons, the place surely brings you stimulating memories. The whole bar is decorated with wooden features, where you will be met by cowboys and cowgirls. Moreover, they are among few good places left that offer rock music! If not, no worries. Seventeen Saloon offers the second stage with softer music. Let’s heat up our heart with music and liquor.

Thi Bar

Feeling down but you are too lazy to wander too far off your hood? Check out this place. The bar is conveniently located inside the tourist downtown and constantly filled up with good music. This is a perfect location for friends to gather, for dancers to release their inner energy.

La Fenetre Soleil

La Fenetre Soleil is a hidden gem of this hectic city, whose morning camouflage is an amazing Indonesian restaurant.
Indika Saigon

Indika Saigon is one of the places that feel like home at your first step inside. The place itself is a masterpiece of architecture. Each corner conveys a different story to tell. There is a perfect harmony of decorative furniture inside and the small garden outside.
2. FISH MASSAGE CAFÉS

Fish massage – dipping your hands or feet in the aquarium to let hundreds of fish leech dead cells on the skin is not strange at all, and so is drinking coffee. Yet, the combination of these two activities has created a new wind in Saigon café style called: fish massage café. This massage fish aka doctor fish is Garra Rufa, originated from Turkey (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_fish). After choosing drinks and the table that suits with the number of people (single, double or a group), customers will have their feet washed to clean dust and chemicals and wound covered (if there is one). At first, when the small and soft mouth of the fish touch your legs, the tickling electric-shock-liked feeling might make you startled and hastily pull back your legs, causing the water to splash but soon you will familiarize with it and enjoy it. And it is also advisable that you wear shorts or capri pants for convenience.

3. BOARD GAME CAFÉS

As the digital age taking over interaction, communication, and connection among people, board games appear to be a haven away from the distractions of everyday grind and help people start to get to know each other very well. On the other hand, the food and drinks will keep you refreshed while playing. And that is how board game cafés were established.

Board Game Station

Inaugurated on International Board Game Day 30/04/2015, Board Game Station has proved to be a popular location among the Saigonese and especially many foreigners. That is why you will hear more English-speaking friends here and it is a great way to practice English if it is not your native language. There are over 60 game titles to choose from. For instance, skilled gamers can play complex games such as Star Wars, Dead of Winter, Castle Panic, Forbidden Stars, 7 Wonders; families or groups can play Monopoly Game of Thrones, Munchkin, Scrabble and children can play Sushi Go!, Spot it, Hive Carbon, Banana, etc. And don’t worry whether you are new or familiar to board games, there are always on-site leaders to assist you when needed. Another special feature of the café is that all board games here are authentic and imported from the US. Therefore, gamers will have the opportunity to access world-class board games, hence forming the consciousness and habits of playing copyrighted games. The menu is decent, with real fruit drinks and smoothies.

TableTop Café is a heaven for experienced gaming enthusiasts as most of the board games here are top-tiered like Kemet, Through The Ages, Agricola, Caverna or Cydades Titans. The seats are plenty but not so comfortable if you were to spend over 2 hours there as they are made of wood. Cushions should be put on them for a better experience. The place is divided into many areas with different decorative styles specializing in different genres of books. For instance, the Hobbit Cave: displaying all books of Nha Nam that are on the market; the Pigeon Nest: a small warm nest for young souls, possessing an impressive number of children’s books; the Don Quixote’s Windmill: the ultimate meeting room with two long tables and colorful chairs, suitable for groups to study and work, or the Green Corner: a small quiet study space dedicated to Korean-Chinese-Japanese literature where you can make tea by yourself and drift into the mysterious regions of Eastern Asia, etc. Nha Nam Books N’ Coffee serves only drinks and prices are quite high. Yet, every coffee-drinking area is facilitated with air-conditioners and strong wifi. So, what is more relaxing and refreshing than sipping a cup of coffee while reading books in such a nice place like this?

There is also a piano which customers can play freely. On Saturday and Sunday evenings, 4221 has acoustic sessions beginning at 8:30pm.

Whereas the news speaks of deprecating bus systems, many such vehicles are actually enjoying a revival, and this time they’re no longer hitting the road, but instead crashing the waves of the ocean. Don’t believe me? Come to the Bus Cafe in Thach An beach, Huế (Hue) and have a look!

The Bus Cafe is located on the shores of Thuận An beach, which is only a thirty-minute motorbike ride from the central Huế, and faster by car. Like most others, the cafe has a quite large menu to offer, but it is not the quality of the drinks that sets this place apart, it is actually the unique space in which they are served.

The name ‘Bus Cafe’ derives from the fact that buses play a key role in the cafe’s aesthetics: everything from the ordering counter to tables and chairs is made from parts of a bus! The vehicles there were once disused and (maybe) a little disgusted, but now, after some extensive refurbishment, they not only managed to outlast their usefulness as a means of transport, but also prove a hit with younger customers. In fact, such is the atmosphere which the ornamental buses and the cafe as a whole have managed to generate that many people actually choose to camp there just to extend their experience, and before you know it, a tent-renting service has been born, so now everyone can spend the night in this rather peculiar surrounding.

What’s more, the cafe claims to have the best views of all cafes in Huế, and while that may sound a little presumptuous, it is really not. Why? Simple: it is placed directly the n hot sand and not very far from the water, so you can enjoy drinking and at the same time take in the expansive view of the sea (or even swim in). After all, who doesn’t want to sip some coffee on a comfortable bus seat while leaning against its bonnet and marvelling at the colors of dawn right by the seaside.

Many tourists I met before often think of Huế as a solemn and old place, mainly because of the impression they get from seeing the great Imperial City. The truth is, however, that Huế is changing everyday, and with new ingenuous minds emerging from the young generation comes innovative ideas that put a new image on this ancient city. The Bus Cafe is more or less representative of this trend, so on your next trip to Huế, stop by, have a drink, and see how the city is renewing.

Considered as an addictive substance, Vietnamese coffee is one of the must-try drinks in the top list, especially if you want to feel the heart and soul of this beautiful S-shaped country. No matter how you drink it, with ice or steaming hot, bitter and black or sweet and milky, Vietnamese coffee will never stop surprising you.

As Saigon continues to thrive into the future, through many ups and downs, these over-50-year-old coffee shops are still open and maintain the painstaking brewing technique with a cloth strainer to make an aromatic cup of coffee, which is hardly applied elsewhere in town. The technique involves putting ground coffee beans into the strainer, propping it over the mouth of a pot which Chinese people often use to cook medicinal herbs, pouring in boiled water and letting it steep for 3-4 minutes. The pot helps keeping the smell intact and ensures the coffee stay warm long after being served to customers. As being processed, the coffee will be tastier than that made by modern steel coffee filter. That’s Saigon Coffee Culture in particular, and Vietnamese Coffee Culture in general.

1. Cheo Leo

Opened in 1938, Cheo Leo is now the oldest café in the city and has remained practically unchanged ever since. The name ‘Cheo Leo’, which means ‘high and dangerous’ in Vietnamese, was due to the fact that the café was miles away from downtown when first built. Before Reunification Day, it was a favorite venue among students of Saigon’s high schools for the gifted such as Pétrus Ky (former name of Le Hong Phong), Chu Van An, Kien Thiet and many famous artists at that time. Presently, it is a preferred drink stop of many foreigners, expats and locals aspiring for a reminder of what Vietnamese coffee used to taste like. The process of making coffee is infinitely elaborate and meticulous. To have a good batch of coffee, tap water must be stored in a tank for 2-3 days to get rid of unwanted smell of disinfectants in water because of which determines the fragrance of coffee. Then the finely ground coffee will be put into a strainer and go through two filtration to produce a perfect cup of coffee. Notably, the best-known drink here is ‘bạc xỉu’- a Chinese-style coffee with a huge amount of condensed milk.

2. Chiêu

Built in 1969, through numerous events, Chieu Café has been an iconic symbol for the persistence of Saigon’s coffee culture. The major space of the first floor, considered as Chieu’s ‘soul’, still remains intact, including its furniture and colors. With the interior design full of warm colors, the blend of orange and brown, Chieu Café gives you immensely comfortable vibe. Later, when the shop has more customers, the owner requisitioned the second floor as a small music stage. As the background is filled with music written by Vietnamese famous composers such as Ngo Thuy Mien, Vu Thanh An and Trinh Cong Son, the beautiful green lianas, and ornamental trees make it comfortable to stay for a while. The menu varies from many types of juices, coffee, cocktails to Vietnamese cuisine for breakfast and lunch.

3. Âm Phủ

This was the first café in Saigon that was set on a trolley, has no official name, no brand and no stop for a long period of over 60 years. Therefore, it has such a creepy name Âm Phủ, or Hell café, called by its repeated customers. In Mr. Dang Ngoc Con’s memory, his father began pushing a trolley to the road to sell coffee during the French colonization in the mid-1950s. Then he followed his father’s footsteps and started a small business together with his wife. The coffee trolley is now set inside their small house along with one or two plastic stools and some more outside in the alley after sunset, when there is much more people’s arrival to enjoy this signature coffee.

4. Mr. Thanh’s

Mr. Luu Nhan Thanh, a Chinese-Vietnamese man in his 70s, is a coffee lover who used to make coffee for himself and some neighbors every morning. Then one day, one of them proposed a brilliant idea to open a coffee shop and now, the coffee shop has been opened for more than 30 years in the Chinatown of District 11. Like Âm Phủ café, this café has no signboard and is poorly-equipped with only a couple of wooden tables and stools. Yet, the neighbors are still able to find the place by following the combined smell of sweet coffee and firewood smoke. On a daily basis, he always gets up early at 5 am to light up a charcoal stove to boil water, put coffee powder in a racket kept inside a pot and pour in boiled water. After a few minutes, the coffee is poured into a steel kettle, which is heated on the stove before bringing to his very first customers, and many people also call this process coffee-braising. And the result is a fragrant cup of coffee with surprisingly cheap price unchanged for more than 3 decades. There is also a small diner near the shop with just VND 20,000 for a bowl of Chinese-style glass noodles. Then, what is more refreshing than kicking off your day with a bowl of hot noodles and a cup of Saigon coffee with just VND 30,000?

5. Bâng Khuâng

The oldest coffee shop in the red basalt area called Bang Khuang (opened in 1967 at 176 Phan Boi Chau Street, Buon Ma Thuot City) was brought to Saigon by the daughter of the owner. In Vietnamese, ‘Bang Khuang’ is a dazing emotion of human, but here it’s the name of a beautiful purple flower known as Angelonia goyazensis in Latin. Renovated from an apartment in an old building, the path to the café are faded stairs. A nostalgic space with old floral tiles, old bookshelves, and tall, open ceilings. Its simple interior decor with paintings, bicycles, plant baskets hung on the wall are arranged randomly, making customers feel like visiting a close friend’s home. Interestingly, the cuckoo sound will resound whenever someone pushes the door in. The café is on a one-way street so it’s a bit inconvenient that you have to take a detour. Parking is free but just keep in mind to get the free parking ticket at the cashier after paying your bill!

A little bit of music and a chill-out night would do no harm. If you are looking for a new breeze to cool off your soul of those tiring and boring days, these cafes may be that ideal hidden getaway. Frankly, not as much of a sign of Western culture can be found around this tiny Hanoi but somewhere in those hidden corners, we can still sense the distinction by the sound of music, the artists that jazz up the place and the souls that are connected. Here are some popular places in Hanoi that you can find the Live Music.

Hanoi Walking Street

From 7:00 PM on Friday to 12:00 AM on Sunday, the streets around Hoan Kiem Lake including Dinh Tien Hoang, Hang Khay, Le Thai To, Le Lai, and so on will become a huge pedestrian zone. In these streets, especially the ones surrounding the lake, you will see lots of street musicians singing, dancing and playing different instruments.

Vietnam Institute of Musicology

Vietnam Institute of Musicology is where some famous Music Festivals and great music performances take place. Sometimes, the teachers and the students of the Institute are the main characters of the performances. But for other special occasions, lots of well-known musicians are invited to play here. Vietnam Institute of Musicology is where you can listen to classics, jazz, acoustics, folk music and much more.
The Doors & Bar 84

The Doors and Bar 84 are the two you should stop by at any convenience. Both The Doors and Bar 84 have somewhat the similarity in the way of design of which simplicity and irreducibility are elevated. The mysterious attractiveness in the clever combination of black and white, dark blue and green with the dusty charm from the color of bricks gives the two a beauty that is hardly mistaken. These themes, I presume, are perfectly fit with what the places offer: drinks, music, chit chat and chill.

For The Doors, live music is on all week with a variety of types performed by many artists despite genders, skin colors, ages and vibes such as jazz, rock ‘n roll, acoustic and so on. Performances at The Door are usually live from 9:00 PM and special music nights with the contribution of foreign artists are often on every Friday night and there will be promo like “2 get 1 FREE for Gin Mix” or “TEQUILA (SHOT) 2 GET 1 FREE”. The place is open from 8:00 AM.

For Bar 84, you can call it a bar, a nightclub or even a restaurant when you come to check it out. Just like The Door, Bar 84 offers quite the same types of music. However, each day is signed for a different type of performances. For example, Monday is “Ladies’ Night” where acoustic is played, Tuesday is for Pre-1975 Vietman songs and 60-70s ballads with the theme “The Old Boys Blue” and so on. The place is open from 9:00 AM to 2:00 AM. So in case you have any free time for a jazz, acoustic or simply for a cup of coffee, just drop by any of them and you will not regret it.

Hanoians have drunk coffee for more than a hundred year since the late 19th century when the French brought it – “such drink which is as dark as sewage and tastes bitter” according to an old newspaper then – into Hanoi. Coffee was meant in the first place to serve French soldiers and officers staying in Vietnam during the war, and later, Vietnamese people – mostly revolutionary scholars or students who just came back from France, though. As it was an unfamiliar and luxurious beverage at that time, it was not until the very first coffee houses were opened by Vietnamese owners in the 1940s that people from all walks of life started to have coffee as a common drink besides green tea and “nước vối” (a drink that is cooked from leaves of a tropical tree whose scientific name is Cleistocalyx operculatus). Roasting, grinding, making coffee in their own distinct, delicate way without much change over the years, these cafes have stood the test of time and are still in business now, becoming a reminder of Hanoi’s old days.

Giảng

Giảng, one of the most popular cafés in Hanoi, was named after its founder - Mr. Nguyen Van Giang - a former bartender at Sofitel Legend Metropole Hotel from 1930 to 1945. After retiring, Mr. Nguyen himself created a new kind of coffee inspired by cappuccino - the egg coffee or “cà phê trứng” - and opened his first shop in 90 Cau Go in 1946. Egg coffee is the concoction of espresso, condensed milk, a little sugar, butter, cheese and egg yolk, resembling a tiramisu in taste. Except for the espresso, all the other ingredients are mixed until they become a lovely creamy foam in a small cup by a bamboo whisk originally – which is now replaced by a stainless steel one or egg beater. The mixture is then poured over the coffee to complete the drink. Giảng offers you two versions of this wonderful beverage - the hot and the cold one. Should you find espresso layer of egg coffee too bitter, try hot egg chocolate – “ca cao trứng” instead. And for you guys who don’t, why not trying all at one time as a coffee cup here is pretty small and may make you feel like having one after another.

Đinh

Situated on the second floor of a small old house in 13 Dinh Tien Hoang Street, Dinh was named after this street and opened by the daughter of Mr. Nguyen Van Giang - Mrs. Bich in 1984, who was a former high school teacher. This used to be a popular spot for students in the 1900s as the price was pretty cheap while the coffee was delicious and the owners were very friendly. Dinh is still at the same address nowadays and because it is very small while everyone wants to have a seat in the balcony outside, make sure you set off early and don’t come at weekends as it would be very crowded. Last but not least, egg coffee is also Dinh’s specialty but it has a different taste from that of Giang. Try and experience yourself.
Năng

Many Hanoians say that getting up early with a cup of coffee at Năng, a more than 50-year-old coffee house, on weekend is a lovely relaxing thing to do. Although it is located in a small bustle street of Hanoi making parking quite difficult, Năng still enchants the locals, especially the artists, by its strong coffee and traditional decorations around the shop. The café is, of course, crowded all day but do come and have a drink as it is worth trying. One last thing to bear in mind, the coffee shop’s name is “Năng” – not “Nắng”, watch out!

Lâm café was opened in 1952 and named after its founder – Mr. Lâm. The coffee bean here is naturally ground without adding any additives and has a distinct taste. Although it is not a spacious café like any other old coffee shops, Nhĩ is always crowded. One special thing is that the café does not have its name on the signboard – all you can see is “cafeteria” – “café giải khát”. So, make sure you come to the right address! Mai’s coffee is distinct for its aroma that can be traced from far away. Nowadays, besides selling coffee bean, it serves coffee at a store as well and if you feel like, you can make coffee yourself right here. Last but not least, the price here is quite high compared to other shops with the cheapest drink is black coffee(hot/cold) – 34.000VND (1.5$).
