Đà Nẵng’s name often brings to mind fascinating images of a lively young city with all the hustle and bustle you can ask out of it, yet deep in its Sơn Trà district lies a totally different, quaintly charming place widely acclaimed as ‘the garden of memory’ – and there’s a reason for that.

The Đồng Đình Museum opened its doors in 2011 to a wealth of visitors seeking to relive the good old days of 20th-century Vietnam. The first to be privately-owned in Central Vietnam, this museum boasts not only a large set of one-of-a-kind exhibits but also an exquisitely mesmerizing architectural setting, full of old-world aesthetics. What strikes the eyes the most, however, is the vast amount of greenery incorporated into virtually every corner of the museum, including the ‘đồng đình’ (or ‘đủng đỉnh’) plant after which the place was named.

All the spectacles aside though, Đồng Đình museum’s ample collection of various relics and other antiquities is the real proof of the pudding.
These buildings can feature anything from modern and traditional Vietnamese art to a visual study of Vietnamese ethnology, and they are designed in a way that best represents what they contain, which, in a way, serves to give a far more detailed and vivid historical context to each and every piece on display than the conventional introductory texts. In fact, such is the nostalgic atmosphere radiating from the environment it creates that the museum has managed to extend its usefulness beyond its original purpose, now occasionally chosen as a venue for major reminiscent art exhibitions and workshops.

Da Nang, arguably the most appealing tourist attraction in Vietnam, is famous not only for its beaches and mountains but also for its cuisine. This melting pot has a lot on offer to whet your appetite.

Banh Beo

Without doubt, Banh Beo is present in all cities of Central Vietnam. However, each province has its own authentic Banh beo. In Da Nang, this dish can be made in both styles: Southern (eaten in big dishes) or Central(eaten in small cups).

Banh Beo is basically made of rice cake. Other ingredients include chopped shrimp, fish, etc. It is usually eaten with fish sauce. Simple as it may sound, this dish stands among the most popular delicacies throughout the country. Originated from Hue, Banh Beo is usually eaten in small, unique “cups”. Because of their size, it may take at least 10 cups to fill your stomach. However, those in the South made some changes in style and decided to make “Banh Beo” about 5 times larger and serve it in big dishes. Though there is no change to the ingredients, this new form of “Banh Beo” gives an unforgettable impression and, therefore, is a must-try.

Rice paper rolls with meat

Rice paper may be too familiar with Vietnamese, but this dish is a complex, yet perfect, combination. Usually, rice paper rolls are eaten with pork meat and some vegetables. In Da Nang, the process is a bit more complicated: After wetting your rice paper with a little water, you include a layer of rice cake, then meat and vegetables. If you’ve yet to try, this dish is much different from its Northern or Southern counterparts.

Ingredients have to be carefully chosen. In order to whet the appetite of customers, everything on the dish must look fresh and tempting. The pork should be neatly sliced and arranged, while vegetables, including salad, cabbage of all kinds, must be fresh and give off a pleasant smell. Most important, however, is the fish sauce. Despite being popular for Vietnamese and Asians in general, this sauce may be unpleasant to some Western travelers due to its strong smell and taste. Another important feature is the rice cake. Instead of using noodles, which is common in the South, Da Nang people prefer this soft, thin layer to make the roll lo oks neat.

Photo via dulichdanang.vn

Recommended:
4 Le Duan, Hai Chau District, Da Nang

Quang Noodle

Needless to say, your trip to Da Nang cannot be complete with the absence of this dish. Using long, thick noodles that make itself distinct, Quang noodle consists of a wide range of ingredients, usually shrimp, chicken, pork, and vegetables. At certain places, your portion of Quang noodle may even be served with jellyfish and crab, which is not so common. Also, each customer is provided with a piece of girdle-cake, which adds to the dish’s flavor. If you’re into vegetables, cress, young banana flowers, and other herbs are also included. One little tip: finish your portion quickly, otherwise the broth will be soaked up by the noodles and make your Quang noodle look (and taste) a lot less tempting.

Photo via toplist.vn

Recommended:
+ Ba Mua Quang noodle (95A Nguyen Tri Phuong, Hai Chau District)
+ Mi Quang Ech Bep Trang (441 Ong Ich Khiem, Hai Chau District)

In case you’re fed up with the conventional chicken, pork…. Why not try frog meat. Although this idea sounds a little bit weird, it has proved successful for decades, attracting locals as well as visitors.

Bun Mam

This specialty is another unique feature of this lovely seaside city. Whether served with pork meat or Vietnamese pork-pie, the taste of “mam” (one kind of fish sauce) lingered on tourists’ tongues for. Many locals have earned their living on selling this, so there’s no need to worry about quality and quantity. Besides, interesting additions to your dish include unripe jackfruit, peanut….

Chicken Rice

Tired of noodles yet? Even though its name sounds like nothing special, chicken rice is another symbol of Da Nang’s culture. Originated from the old town of Hoi An, this dish is not to be missed on any visitor’s trip to Da Nang. The taste of the chicken and the rice as well are unique and incomparable to normal rice, since the water used for boiling the chicken is reused with the rice. This accounts for the rice’s sweet taste as well as the distinct yellow color.

Photo via foody.vn

Recommended: Com ga A Hải (96 Phan Chau Trinh, Da Nang)

Bun thit nuong (Noodles with grilled pork)

As its name is self-explanatory, this dish consists of noodles and grilled meat. To increase the dish’s appeal, stalls often offer you grilled meat on a skewer. Resisting the smell this dish gives off is rather difficult. Also usually eaten with vegetables, it bears resemblance to the aforementioned “bun mam”. One striking difference, however, is that bun thit nuong’s sauce is milder, thus more pleasant to foreigners who aren’t used to the harsh taste of fish sauce (Westerners in particular). Toppings include unripe papaya, herbs, cucumber, sometimes girdle-cake …..

Photo via foody.vn

Recommended: bun thit nuong ba Sau (469 Hoang Dieu, Binh Thuan Ward, Hai Chau District)

Banh xeo (Vietnamese crepes)

Those who have paid Saigon a visit won’t find this dish anything unfamiliar. However, Da Nang’s Banh xeo is different from Saigon’s. Unlike the big, luxurious bath so often served in restaurants in the South, banh xeo in Da Nang, and in Central Vietnam in general, looks far more humble: much smaller (because of they’re made in small molds), and thicker than the other one. As one is only the size of an adult’s hand, it often took 3-4 crepes to get yourself a sufficient lunch.

Recommended: Banh xeo Ba Duong (K280/23 Hoàng Diệu, Hai Chau District, Da Nang)

Oc hut (screw)

As Da Nang is a famous seaside city, this spectacular seafood dish can’t be missing from this list. Sea snails, often caught offshore, are perfect for a well-spent evening on the beach with family and friends. When served, the snail should have been prepared so that customers only need to suck its meat, the sweet taste of which may remain on your tongue for pretty long. However, please note that as this dish can go off quite soon. Therefore, adding some Chilli is advisable. Vietnamese also usually accompany this dish with girdle cake.

Bánh Canh ‘Chờ’

Living up to the title of street food, Bánh Canh ‘Chờ’ (Banh Canh ‘Wait’) is truly a hidden gem of Danang culinary scene in that the place doesn’t have a tangible building but rather, operates completely in the open air. In fact, Bánh Canh ‘Chờ’ is not the eatery’s real name either; nobody knows what the place was originally called, but most customers go with the name nonetheless as it comically represents a familiar scene – lines and lines of customer queueing up for those mouth-watering bowls of Bánh Canh. With one single iconic dish and a very budget-friendly price of 8.000VND (as a matter of fact, when asked why the place opted for such a low price, the owner lady cheerfully told us, “Actually, we have raised the price many times in the past; every time we did, the price went up by VND 1K!”), Bánh Canh Chờ’s 15-minute queues are not only worth it, but definitely a bargain for any tourist short on money after a whole day of shopping!

Muc Dong Parade Festival in Da Nang is celebrated mainly for kids who spend most of their time working on the fields to take care of their buffaloes. It is held in Phong Lệ village, Da Nang, Vietnam every three years, and it falls on the two last days of March in Lunar calendar with the purpose of praying for an abundant crop.

Photo via googleusercontent.com

Legend has it that, once upon a time in Phong Lệ village, there stayed a green grass isle. One day, a man herded his flock of ducks onto the top of the isle. Suddenly, the ducks’ webbed foot got stuck in the soil that they could hardly move. Villagers named it “Isle of God” due to the fact that they thought the God showed up and grabbed the whole flock with his own hands. After that, everyone was afraid of this place and they never came here. However, on another day, some buffaloes got lost wandering off around the area, and the herd-boys (boys taking care of these buffaloes) climbed up the isle. There was nothing bad happening to them. Then rumor has it that, only the herd-boys (Muc Dong) have got the permission from God to hang out nearby. The isle has got to become a meeting destination for local herd-boys later on. It has been remained the same throughout many generations and gradually formed up into an official festival in Da Nang. This festival used to be held once every 3 years then 6 years and nowadays 12 years to remind of the children who look after the buffaloes in Phong Le Village.

Photo via googleusercontent.com

During the last ten days of March when people get more free time from their on-field work, it comes to a busy period for the festival’s preparation. The landowners considered middle –peasants as the ones to take care of everything inside out. Apart from small flags of the herd-boys, the big ones are carefully provided by 13 big cliques in the village as well. Big flags are seen with 5-meter bamboo flagstaffs, featured images of Four Holy Animals which are Dragon, Oriental Unicorn, Tortoise and Phoenix; or Four Main Classes known as Intellectuals, Farmers, Workers and Traders respectively. They are common expressions in a typical traditional Asian nation like China or Vietnam. Above all, the most popular images are always agricultural items like a plough, a hoe or a shovel.

Photo via dulichdanang123.com

On March 29th, villagers are all gathering, even those who are settling down in far-off cities. The herd-boys will hold their flags altogether walking around the rice paddies in order to wish for a prosperous and abundant crop ahead. 30th of March is the main day of the festival, when everyone unites at a temple called “Temple of the Herd-boy”. The leader walks, prays and places a statue of Agricultural God into a palanquin carried by a group of 4 herd-boys of the same height to the isle.

Photo via danviet.vn

People say that the moment when the Sun is above the top of the bamboo range is also the right time for the festival to be finished. Everyone comes back to a normal daily life with their field works in a strong belief in a successful crop waiting ahead.

A wonderful saying by the American entrepreneur and author Jim Rohn goes: “Whatever good things we build end up building us”. From an architectural point of view, this is especially true. There are countless instances of constructions so visually powerful that they come to represent the city which erected them. After all, who can imagine a Paris without the magnificent Eiffel tower, a Dubai without its marvelous Burj Khalifa or a New York without the iconic Liberty Statue? As for the coastal city of Đà Nẵng, few can think of it short of the spectacular bridges that go beyond their utilitarian nature to symbolize the sprawling municipality, as will be presented in the video and all photos below. They are the most beautiful bridges in Da Nang, Vietnam.

Cầu Rồng (Dragon Bridge)

On March 29th, 2013, citizens of Đà Nẵng greeted a valuable addition to the city’s collection of bridges, one that bears the shape of a dragon, glows during night time and occasionally breathes fire – the Dragon Bridge. Boasting a length of 666 meters, the bridge serves as a faster route from Đà Nẵng Airport to the heart of the city, providing numerous vehicles with a passage across Hàn river on its six impressively wide lanes (total width is 37.5 meters). What makes this bridge stand out is, of course, its extraordinary architecture. As mentioned, the bridge’s arches form a large-scale model of a dragon from the Lý dynasty. The gold dragon flies in the direction of the sea, symbolizing growth and prosperity, and after sunset, it is lit inside-out with multi colored lights. That, coupled with the frequent ‘fire breaths’, makes for an extravagant display which few would want to miss.

Trần Thị Lý Bridge

Built back in 1950 during the French Colonial Period as the only bridge across Hàn river, the bridge went through many names, first known as De Lattre bridge, then Trịnh Minh Thế bridge and finally Trần Thị Lý bridge when it was rebuilt around the same time as the Dragon Bridge. It is 731 meters long and 34.5 meters wide and though lacking in splendor when compared to its dragon-like counterpart, Trần Thị Lý bridge still sports some of the most stunning architectural features, with its single support pylon built not upright but a little leaned to the side so that when viewed along with the cables, the whole structure would resemble sail gliding towards the sea, as an emblem of the city’s desire to thrive. Similar to the Dragon Bridge, this bridge treats its onlooker to a feast of eye candy with its splendid light performances every night.

Hàn River Bridge

Aah, the swing bridges, feats of engineering, unearthly sights to the eyes and marks of human’s resourcefulness, all in Da Nang. This makes it feel a little bit privileged for Đà Nẵng to have the only such bridge in Vietnam in its own traffic system – the Hàn River bridge.

Following 5 years of construction, the Hàn River bridge had its inauguration on March 29th, 2003. A major route across Hàn river, the bridge stands as a source of pride for Vietnam’s construction industry, having been thoroughly designed and built by Vietnamese architects and engineers despite being the first of its kind. With its opening, Đà Nẵng entered a new era of growth to become the lively and flourishing city that came to be known as ‘the new Singapore’.

Hàn River Bridge is approximately 487 meters long and 13 meters wide – a no match for the above-mentioned bridges in terms of size or grandeur, yet many still regard it as the most interesting bridge in Đà Nẵng. Why? Because its main attraction only comes at midnight (yes, midnight!) – the ‘swinging’ action: at anytime from 11 p.m to 2 a.m everyday (exact time fluctuates) and for a span of just over an hour, the middle section of the bridge turns 90 degrees sideways to make room for large coming vessels to pass through and then revert to its original state. Indeed, this makes for a curiously mesmerizing sight, at least for those new to swing bridges, and a good many of such are to be found on the riverside or even the bridge spectating with awed eyes.

If you have ample time to discover Đà Nẵng, be sure not to miss out on this wondrous moment. After all, who doesn’t want to be chilling by the banks with cool breezes blowing from the river while watching such a massive structure morph itself.

Address: Cầu Sông Hàn, Hải Châu 1, Hải Châu, Đà Nẵng

Thuận Phước Bridge

Some would disagree, but I like to call Đà Nẵng the city of the extremes – it has some of the best holiday resorts, it is regarded as the best place to live in Vietnam, TripAdvisor puts it in the top 10 new destinations, and on July 19th, 2009, with the inauguration of Thuận Phước bridge, the city officially became known for having the longest suspension bridge in all of Vietnam. Unlike the somewhat traditional-looking Dragon bridge, this 1856-meter-long bridge has a modern aura to itself, and the fact that it’s located right on the waterfront only helps to further its attractiveness. During daytime, the bridge’s white-washed supports help to polish the already gleaming cityscape; at night, its technicolor lighting adds a touch of enigma to the ever so captivating view over Hàn river. Yet, spectacle aside, the significance of Thuận Phước bridge lies in its functionality as a way of connecting major routes to form a continuous traffic system from Hải Vân to Sơn Trà peninsula, thereby expanding travel and business opportunities. Indeed, if the completion of Hàn River bridge marked a new period of development for Đà Nẵng, then the erection of Thuận Phước bridge would be the sweet result.

There’s a story behind every nickname, and behind Đà Nẵng – ‘The city of bridges’ lies the story of a burgeoning city striving every day towards a better future for its citizens. Surely, some may see Đà Nẵng’s bridges as no more than concrete and metal, but like every great architectural landmark, it is still what makes them stand out.

Đà Nẵng is pretty much one of the best cities in Vietnam chosen by flocks of Vietnamese when asked. Visiting the area, you are definitely amazed by countless destinations. They are the lovely gorgeous beaches with white sand under the sunshine that you can take a sunbath, also the city’s museums where you can walk around to learn more about a special community living hundreds of years in the Central of Vietnam. Besides, Da Nang is the city that you can try all the delicious local foods.

Apart from all these things, a festival in Da Nang is another reason that should be taken into account. Started since 2008, Danang International Fireworks Festival is a special event held every April on 29th or 30th with the aim of celebrating the Reunification Day and Labour Day of the country.

It has the participation of 3 to 4 foreign countries and Vietnam as a host country. This is the very first international fireworks competition in Vietnam. Once visiting Đà Nẵng on these special days, you should join with 25.000 people and witness the countries compete in a beautiful Fireworks competition.

Photo via media.baogiaothong.vn

In this year – 2017, as announced, the festival would be lasting for 2 months with the presence of 8 countries such as Austria, Australia, China, The UK, Switzerland, and Vietnam. The chosen topic this time would be named “Toa Sang Ngu Hanh Son”, which literally stands for 5 iconic mountains known as the city’s popular tourist attractions, called “Metal – Wood – Water – Fire – Earth”. The competition took place on 5 nights, on every Saturday and 3 teams with highest scores would be going to be announced on the last day June 24th, 2017, getting selected into the finale.

MOTORBIKE

Making it to Da Nang by motorbike is actually ideal for backpackers. Conveniently located in the heart of Central Vietnam, the city presents few difficulties to reach from both ends of the country because you just need to go along National Highway 1A to get there. If you arrive from the North, the most attractive road on track is probably Hai Van pass also known as Đèo Mây (Cloud Pass), which is considered as one of the best coastal roads in the world. Hai Van Pass is the border between northern and southern climate of Vietnam. Especially, with its winding roads, a bit of fog makes the scenery look stunning but you also have to be really careful when taking your ride on this road.

The necessary items for going backpacking by motorbike to Da Nang:
– Hand pump
– Reserve tires
– Raincoat
– Sunscreen
– Good helmet
– Mask and gloves
– Sleeping bag
– Reserve fuel tank.
