Hoa 10 giờ - Floral & Book

On taking your first steps into this wonderful store, you will definitely be astonished by the pretty colorful flowers on sale. Orderly laid on the shelf to the left, these delightful flowers make up a small floral shop on the first floor. Buy yourself a bouquet or head to the bar on the right of the room to order a drink then have a seat, watch the fresh flowers and take a few photos at will. Another choice is to mount the staircases to the second floor where you will find a little library with many literary novels, comics, and even economic books. To mention, you can’t use the large glass door upstairs but take the small route beside just like the Diagon Alley in Harry Porter instead to get into the second floor’s interior, which is of much excitement, isn’t it?

Back in the old days, when Hanoi’s coffee culture was always seen in an image simply of plastic chairs, wooden tables, and cups of dark coffee with French drip filters or coffee with condensed milk merely. To find the most vintage coffee shops in Hanoi, you can read our previous article:

At that time, coffee drinkers were often middle-aged men who liked spending time with their old friends at a reasonably-priced cafeteria or a sidewalk cafe. This traditional sidewalk coffee culture still appears nowadays, but not as much as in the past. It is because of the “invasion” of international coffee brands such as Starbucks entering Vietnam two to three years back. The coffee trending in Hanoi particularly and in Vietnam generally has been significantly changed since then. Thousands of young entrepreneurs have caught that chance to found their own national brands.

Particularly saying, the new coffee trending in Hanoi has attracted a large number of consumers since the target market that almost all the new brands aim at is the youth.

Contemporarily emerged with Korean culture wave (Hallyu), the themes chosen by these start-ups somehow indicate Korean style where clients can find a good view or simply an elegant background used for selfie or photography.

The young people do not simply go to a coffee shop to drink a coffee; they actually want to find a place to do other things – work, study, make friends, take photos and so on.

The “revolution” did not just stop with the decoration only, but even a wide range of beverages is also created to reach new client classes. Thought black coffee and coffee with condensed milk are still at the top menu, they have been overshadowed somehow by new drinks such as espresso, cappuccino or even foam matcha, black tea, iced-blended, milkshake, mojito, juice, smoothies, etc.

Frankly speaking, coffee shops in Hanoi are more than just coffee. And of course, these places such as The Coffee House, Cup of Tea, Xofa Café, First Floor Cosmo Café (Tầng Trệt Café Cosmo), Cong Cafe, Tranquil, etc. are the most absolute favorite places of Hanoi young people with a nice blend of view, atmosphere, drinks, barista and service.

It is undeniable that the beauty of Hanoi is hidden in each corner of the old quarter which can only be traced by walking through all the bustle, crowded, narrow city’s alleys and streets. On the other hand, it is the wonderful view of the city that makes not only tourists but also locals deeply fall in love with Hanoi. There can’t be a better way to catch sight of such lovely views other than taking yourself a seat at the following cafés that I have listed for you so you don’t have to. Take a look at the list and let’s go!

As Hanoi gets its fame mainly for these three tourist attractions: Hoan Kiem Lake(Sword Lake), the Notre Cathedral Church and West Lake, today’s guide is focusing on coffee shops that own the view of them.

Hoan Kiem Lake View

If the locals are rather familiar with winding the way up several narrow staircases and/or coming into the signless dark lane before reaching the café, it may quite confuse foreigners to find the route up to almost all coffee shops surrounding Hoan Kiem Lake. But the spectacular view from such cafés is worth experiencing for once, so what to hesitate?

1. Avalon café and Lounge

Considered the symbol of the capital city, Avalon is always the top preferred café in Sword Lake area. It attracts people for the ideal broad view from which both ancient street and Hoan Kiem Lake, as well as The Huc Bridge, can be seen without being hindered by trees. Avalon is located from the 4th floor to 7th floor of a building with differently decorated style for each story. The 4th floor is a restaurant that serves a variety of Vietnamese, Asian and Western cuisines. The 5th and 6th story is accordingly lounge bar and semi lounge. The rooftop on the 7th floor where you can have the best view is sky-garden decorated, giving you such a relaxing feel.

Many travel webs and blogs have recommended this coffee shop to drop by in Hanoi. Famous for its egg coffee, Ca Phe Pho Co also attracts foreigners by the way leading to it. Once you arrive at 11 Hàng Gai, don’t hesitate to go straight into the small lane between the souvenir shop and then take your time mounting the old residential stairs here, watch out as the pet cat may suddenly appear and take you back. Views across the lake are great-especially from the fourth floor- and make for a lovely spot for watching the endless stream of overloaded scooters, cyclos and honking taxis.

1. Street cafés

If Vietnamese street food is so well-known to the world, street coffee is of no less popularity. Such cafés don’t need to decorate their interior at all, what they do is just sparing some space and laying sets of chairs and tables. Why are they so popular? It is the lovely feel, wonderful view and delicious but also cheap beverage that attracts drinkers. Spending15.000 VND – less than 1$ for an iced lime tea, a specialty here- then you have a seat to admire the delightful church for hours. There are many street cafes along Nhà Thờ Street but the most recommended one is that at 2 Nhà Chung- right on the way to the church square-which has been in business since 2000.

Designed separately regarding the two stories, Kaffeine offers private space on the first floor with stumpy wooden tables and soft floor mats apart from common sets; a long wooden table available for 15 people as a noticeable mark, turning it into a perfect spot for small parties or group meetings.

Scoops of coconut ice cream are put into a fresh small coconut, served with dried and grated coconut, and a tiny cherry.

A little bit of music and a chill-out night would do no harm. If you are looking for a new breeze to cool off your soul of those tiring and boring days, these cafes may be that ideal hidden getaway. Frankly, not as much of a sign of Western culture can be found around this tiny Hanoi but somewhere in those hidden corners, we can still sense the distinction by the sound of music, the artists that jazz up the place and the souls that are connected. Here are some popular places in Hanoi that you can find the Live Music.

Hanoi Walking Street

From 7:00 PM on Friday to 12:00 AM on Sunday, the streets around Hoan Kiem Lake including Dinh Tien Hoang, Hang Khay, Le Thai To, Le Lai, and so on will become a huge pedestrian zone. In these streets, especially the ones surrounding the lake, you will see lots of street musicians singing, dancing and playing different instruments.

Vietnam Institute of Musicology

Vietnam Institute of Musicology is where some famous Music Festivals and great music performances take place. Sometimes, the teachers and the students of the Institute are the main characters of the performances. But for other special occasions, lots of well-known musicians are invited to play here. Vietnam Institute of Musicology is where you can listen to classics, jazz, acoustics, folk music and much more. To check out upcoming events there, check its website here.

The Doors & Bar 84

The Doors and Bar 84 are the two you should stop by at any convenience. Both The Doors and Bar 84 have somewhat the similarity in the way of design of which simplicity and irreducibility are elevated. The mysterious attractiveness in the clever combination of black and white, dark blue and green with the dusty charm from the color of bricks gives the two a beauty that is hardly mistaken. These themes, I presume, are perfectly fit with what the places offer: drinks, music, chit chat and chill.

For The Doors, live music is on all week with a variety of types performed by many artists despite genders, skin colors, ages and vibes such as jazz, rock ‘n roll, acoustic and so on. Performances at The Door are usually live from 9:00 PM and special music nights with the contribution of foreign artists are often on every Friday night and there will be promo like “2 get 1 FREE for Gin Mix” or “TEQUILA (SHOT) 2 GET 1 FREE”. The place is open from 8:00 AM.

For Bar 84, you can call it a bar, a nightclub or even a restaurant when you come to check it out. Just like The Door, Bar 84 offers quite the same types of music. However, each day is signed for a different type of performances. For example, Monday is “Ladies’ Night” where acoustic is played, Tuesday is for Pre-1975 Vietman songs and 60-70s ballads with the theme “The Old Boys Blue” and so on. The place is open from 9:00 AM to 2:00 AM. So in case you have any free time for a jazz, acoustic or simply for a cup of coffee, just drop by any of them and you will not regret it.

Hanoians have drunk coffee for more than a hundred year since the late 19th century when the French brought it – “such drink which is as dark as sewage and tastes bitter” according to an old newspaper then – into Hanoi. Coffee was meant in the first place to serve French soldiers and officers staying in Vietnam during the war, and later, Vietnamese people – mostly revolutionary scholars or students who just came back from France, though. As it was an unfamiliar and luxurious beverage at that time, it was not until the very first coffee houses were opened by Vietnamese owners in the 1940s that people from all walks of life started to have coffee as a common drink besides green tea and “nước vối” (a drink that is cooked from leaves of a tropical tree whose scientific name is Cleistocalyx operculatus). Roasting, grinding, making coffee in their own distinct, delicate way without much change over the years, these cafes have stood the test of time and are still in business now, becoming a reminder of Hanoi’s old days.

Giảng

Giảng, one of the most popular cafés in Hanoi, was named after its founder - Mr. Nguyen Van Giang - a former bartender at Sofitel Legend Metropole Hotel from 1930 to 1945. After retiring, Mr. Nguyen himself created a new kind of coffee inspired by cappuccino - the egg coffee or “cà phê trứng” - and opened his first shop in 90 Cau Go in 1946. Egg coffee is the concoction of espresso, condensed milk, a little sugar, butter, cheese and egg yolk, resembling a tiramisu in taste. Except for the espresso, all the other ingredients are mixed until they become a lovely creamy foam in a small cup by a bamboo whisk originally – which is now replaced by a stainless steel one or egg beater. The mixture is then poured over the coffee to complete the drink. Giảng offers you two versions of this wonderful beverage - the hot and the cold one. Should you find espresso layer of egg coffee too bitter, try hot egg chocolate – “ca cao trứng” instead. And for you guys who don’t, why not trying all at one time as a coffee cup here is pretty small and may make you feel like having one after another.

This used to be a popular spot for students in the 1900s as the price was pretty cheap while the coffee was delicious and the owners were very friendly.
Many Hanoians say that getting up early with a cup of coffee at Năng, a more than 50-year-old coffee house, on weekend is a lovely relaxing thing to do. Although it is located in a small bustle street of Hanoi making parking quite difficult, Năng still enchants the locals, especially the artists, by its strong coffee and traditional decorations around the shop. The café is, of course, crowded all day but do come and have a drink as it is worth trying. One last thing to bear in mind, the coffee shop’s name is “Năng” – not “Nắng”, watch out!

Nhĩ

Nhĩ used to be one of the top 4 cafés in Hanoi along with Nhân, Giảng and Dĩ long time ago (Dĩ is an old café but it is now hardly found in Hanoi and people rumor that it is out of business). Although it is not a spacious café like any other old coffee shops, Nhĩ is always crowded. One special thing is that the café does not have its name on the signboard – all you can see is “cafeteria” – “café giải khát”. So, make sure you come to the right address! And once again, the café’s name is “Nhĩ” – not “Nhi”, don’t be mistaken!

Mai

The last coffee shop on our list today is Mai café. Mai was opened in 1936 and in the first place just sold packed roasted coffee along with raw coffee bean. Mai’s coffee is distinct for its aroma that can be traced from far away. Nowadays, besides selling coffee bean, it serves coffee at a store as well and if you feel like, you can make coffee yourself right here. Last but not least, the price here is quite high compared to other shops with the cheapest drink is black coffee(hot/cold) – 34.000VND (1.5$).
