If you want to sink yourself in the Asian sensation right here in the center of the capital, the doors of Palmy are always open waiting for your arrival.

7. Hanoi Imperial Hotel (3-star)

“We take you home away from home” is what written on the hotel’s website page. Despite not being a high ranked accommodation compared to those above, Hanoi Imperial is still very suitable for those who want to enjoy a moderation in price but hospitability, honesty and a great service are always maintained.

Nem Chua Rán Bà Già (The Old Lady’s Fried Fermented Pork Roll)

Staying hidden in the side of Hàng Bông Street, the Old Lady’s is easily missed by most foreigners. With a small hand-drawn sign and not at all highlighted, the Old Lady’s, at first sight, seems to scare a bit. If you are not a meticulous person to notice the sign, the only signal that will tell is an old lady or old man at the entrance of the lane will ask you something like: “Nem chua không em ơi?!!” - Do you want some fried fermented pork rolls my pal? The feeling of entering the small lane (alley) for the first time seems quite scary because it is dark even in the day light but somehow very adventurous. However, when you finally get there, you will find yourself sitting in the tiny room with plain plastic table sets but miraculously fits about 10 people. The place has another back door which opens to the side lane which is another “snack’s heaven”!

About the fried fermented pork rolls, there is nothing you have to worry about because they are absolutely delicious! If compared to Ấu Triệu’s fermented rolls - a popular spot for nem chua, this dish will definitely be better and cheaper! Besides the rolls, the Old Lady’s also offers some other dishes and drinks such as fried fries, cheese sticks, iced tea, and kumquat tea and so on.

Chén Trứng Nướng (Nguyễn Quang Bích’s Fried Eggs)

Nguyễn Quang Bích is well known as the night street of snacks and hotpots. There is also a market that opens late at night which sells mainly fish. On the side of Nguyễn Quang Bích, you will notice a few lines of chairs and tables set on the side of the street and people are sitting there, one side for hotpot and one side for snacks. As soon as you arrive there, just look to the opposite side, you will see a few people are cooking with small stove and grates, just go there and order your food, there will be a menu for you. If you cannot read Vietnamese, you can order these suggested dishes:
The first dish that you must try is small bowls of fried eggs (Chén trứng nướng) which is the specialty of the stall. If you go in a group of two, you can order 4 bowls because they are quite small portions.

Phở Cuốn Ngũ Xã (Ngũ Xã’s Rolled Phở)

Mentioning of Ngũ Xã, no one will forget about its notorious rolled phở (phở cuốn). The one-and-only rolled phở here has made its name for a long long time. If you want to try the most genuine rolled phở in Hanoi, just pack your bag to Ngũ Xã Street, there will be millions of family restaurants for you to choose from. However, the one on the street side is still advisory since it is an old family restaurant that has been put in choice by so many customers. Again, you will have your plastic table sets and sometimes you will find that there is not so much space for you to sit properly and if you are a little bit too tall, well, this will be an obstacle! In contrast, maybe it is still acceptable because you can try the best of the best-rolled phở in Hanoi!

Usually, if you go in a group of 2, you should call a dish of 10 sticks, but if you can eat more, just go for it! There is also a very great dish that you should also order which is bloated fried phở (phở chiên phồng). Because this is served in dish so one is fair enough.

Bánh Tráng Nướng Hàng Tre (Hàng Tre’s Grilled Girdle Cake)

A place where Hanoi’s teenagers usually come every weekend is probably 48 Hàng Tre, where has the well-known grilled girdle cake looking like another version of pizza. The making of grilled girdle cake is very simple but there are so many flavors that you can choose from such as butter, beef jerky or mixing of all kinds. If you go to Hanoi, then Hàng Tre’s girdle cake is a dish that you must try at least once!
The restaurant is not too big but there are two floors. Most of the time, the owner will ask you to go through a small lane to the second floor because it is cleaner and there are small table sets which fit three people. The price is also very cheap and competitive so you can enjoy your dish to the fullest!

Bánh Tráng Trộn Cô Toàn (Aunt Toàn’s mixing girdle cake)

It has been a long time since Hanoians, especially the teenagers usually dropped by Aunt Toàn’s girdle cake family restaurant. Until now, if being asked about the place with the best mixing girdle cake, most of the answers received will be Aunt Toàn’s. Mixing girdle has no longer been a strange dish to Hanoians for the last few years. And for a snack that you will probably want to enjoy all day, mixing girdle cake is definitely the dish. Actually, in a previous post of Luke Nguyễn, girdle cake was once recommended by him as the most tasteful dish with a surprisingly cheap price that you can get in the capital. The ingredients are so simple such as quail eggs, fennels, mints, mangoes, beef jerky, dried shrimps and chili powder can still add up to such perfect snack. Aunt Toàn’s mixing girdle cake has made its name as the best and most favorite kind of girdle cakes in Hanoi.

Nộm Long Vi Dung (Long Vi Dung’s sweet and sour grated salad)

Sweet and sour grated salad or also known as “nộm” in Vietnamese is an absolutely delicious treat that you must never ever forget to try when setting foot to Hanoi. The Old Quarter is indeed a heaven for snacks in the capital. Here you will find dozens of scrumptious treats but only if you look closer, can you find the best dish! Long Vi Dung’s Nộm is an example. This nộm restaurant has been in working for such a long time. In the past, it was run by Mr. Long, who is native of China, and the ingredients, as well as the recipe, were brought by him from the country to Vietnam. Nộm at Long Vi or in general is generated from China for a long time and now it has been changed partly to fit with Vietnamese’s appetite. After Mr. Long passed away, the restaurant was passed on to his son and the flavor is still stay the same.

The dish is a harmonizing mix of papaws, carrots, fennel and different kinds of beef and jerky. Again, the soul of the dish is still the sauce, which is mixed together with all the ingredients to create the most unforgettable taste that one can find. The restaurant is relatively small but there are always so many customers so sometimes you will find yourself sitting on the side of the street with the same plastic table sets, except for the table is now replaced with a plastic chair and a metal tray. Well, but that is just the thing that creates the unique street-eating style of Hanoi!
Mỳ Vằn Thắn Đinh Liệt (Đinh Liệt Street’s Vằn Thắn Noodle)

Đinh Liệt Street in the Old Quarter is definitely another place you should drop by if you are a noodle lover. Vằn thắn noodle in Đinh Liệt has been so popular for such a long long time since the time of our parents, they have gone there hundreds of times just to have a bowl of noodle. It even used to be a dating place for former generations in our city! Having a taste of vằn thắn in the middle of the winter is somewhat an indescribable feeling.

Usually, in other vằn thắn restaurants, they will only offer normal vằn thắn bowl in which the noodle is soaked in bouillon; but at Vằn Thắn Đinh Liệt, you will find another dish known as dried or mixed vằn thắn noodle dish in which the noodle is mixed with a very special sauce. The first time tasting this dish, most people also bear the same question in mind of what ingredients is this sauce made of; but of course, it is the restaurant confidential information!

While Saigon has a popular Nguyen Van Binh Book Street, Hanoi launched its own version named 19/12 in 2016.

The 19/12 book street as it is known today has a much more thrilling mysterious long history to learn than you might imagine. Formerly used as a public graveyard burying dead people of the National Resistance War against French colonialists, which occurred in Hanoi in 1946, this cemetery turned into a flea market by 1986 as all the corpses were brought to another place. Although the market was then named 19/12, hardly did any merchants and the locals use that one. They, instead, called it Chợ Âm Phủ – Hell market!

Photo via i.ytimg.com

Considered as one of the most popular streets in Hanoi, 19/12, also once known as Rue Simoni St, cannot be home to any Trade centres, which is due to the very Oriental belief of the “Otherworld” that all the dead spirits of the war still rest in peace here, making it a wise thing to follow – do not disturb them under any circumstances! Scary and gloomy as it might seem, Chợ Âm Phủ was on the other hand just like a supermarket with all variety of goods that normal customers will look for – vegetable, seafood, poultry, herbs, haberdashery and so on. The most interesting feature was, however, the main good sold here was nothing other than Dogmeat – Thịt chó. People believe that the very dish along with shrimp paste and white wine would avoid dark spirits entering the market.

Photo taken by Phuong Hoang

Sadly, 2008 saw the closing of the market to make room for a park in memory of the war victims. And on May 1, 2017, the park was one more time reconstructed into a book street, welcoming all the locals and foreigners. Tuoi Tre Newspaper reports that the opening caught so much public attention since thousands of people came to celebrate. However, after six months, the street started to see a decrease in visitors. The bookstores used to earn more than 100 million dongs in the first few months, but recently they gained less than 50 million dongs. They are now trying hard to survive in 19/12 street.

Photo taken by Phuong Hoang

19/12 book street opens daily from 8:00 am to 22:00 pm. It is equipped with electronic information boards introducing Vietnam’s history. There is also a lovely flower store on the left and a Nhã Nam bookstore on the right at the street-door; many benches are situated along the path for visitors to rest or take a selfie.

Photo taken by Phuong Hoang

Fun fact: If you go to 19/12 Street, you will find it as a photoshoot area rather than a book area.

A little bit of music and a chill-out night would do no harm. If you are looking for a new breeze to cool off your soul of those tiring and boring days, these cafes may be that ideal hidden getaway. Frankly, not as much of a sign of Western culture can be found around this tiny Hanoi but somewhere in those hidden corners, we can still sense the distinction by the sound of music, the artists that jazz up the place and the souls that are connected. Here are some popular places in Hanoi that you can find the Live Music.

Hanoi Walking Street

From 7:00 PM on Friday to 12:00 AM on Sunday, the streets around Hoan Kiem Lake including Dinh Tien Hoang, Hang Khay, Le Thai To, Le Lai, and so on will become a huge pedestrian zone. In these streets, especially the ones surrounding the lake, you will see lots of street musicians singing, dancing and playing different instruments.

Vietnam Institute of Musicology

Vietnam Institute of Musicology is where some famous Music Festivals and great music performances take place. Sometimes, the teachers and the students of the Institute are the main characters of the performances. But for other special occasions, lots of well-known musicians are invited to play here. Vietnam Institute of Musicology is where you can listen to classics, jazz, acoustics, folk music and much more. To check out upcoming events there, check its website here.

The Doors & Bar 84

The Doors and Bar 84 are the two you should stop by at any convenience. Both The Doors and Bar 84 have somewhat the similarity in the way of design of which simplicity and irreducibility are elevated. The mysterious attractiveness in the clever combination of black and white, dark blue and green with the dusty charm from the color of bricks gives the two a beauty that is hardly mistaken. These themes, I presume, are perfectly fit with what the places offer: drinks, music, chit chat and chill.

For The Doors, live music is on all week with a variety of types performed by many artists despite genders, skin colors, ages and vibes such as jazz, rock ‘n roll, acoustic and so on. Performances at The Door are usually live from 9:00 PM and special music nights with the contribution of foreign artists are often on every Friday night and there will be promo like “2 get 1 FREE for Gin Mix” or “TEQUILA (SHOT) 2 GET 1 FREE”. The place is open from 8:00 AM.

For Bar 84, you can call it a bar, a nightclub or even a restaurant when you come to check it out. Just like The Door, Bar 84 offers quite the same types of music. However, each day is signed for a different type of performances. For example, Monday is “Ladies’ Night” where acoustic is played, Tuesday is for Pre-1975 Vietman songs and 60-70s ballads with the theme “The Old Boys Blue” and so on. The place is open from 9:00 AM to 2:00 AM. So in case you have any free time for a jazz, acoustic or simply for a cup of coffee, just drop by any of them and you will not regret it.

“Street vendors, wonder since what time or age they have become a kind of “mental treat”, a part of Vietnamese souls, beath and that cannot-be-replaced culture given away by our ancestors. Those bamboo frames holding with two big baskets carrying from small fruits to huge pots of rib congee have been the daily bread of their whole life. A beautiful culture also means a cruel reality. Whenever a street vendor appears, it also represents an encumbrance of someone as they are carrying the life of their whole families on their skinny shoulders and walk from day to night. That is why sometimes street vendor is also known as ‘burden vendor’. There was a time, probably in the 80s, when street vendors were very popular that they were often seen in each path of our country. And people when looking in those old captures of Vietnam would wonder why the sellers are mostly female. Just imagine when you live in a primitive community or simply recall what you have learnt from the books, men those days would do the hunting while women were in charge of harvesting. That way of thinking still exists until this moment that women are supposed to do small things. And as those glorious days pass by and people begin to prefer shopping in modern supermarkets and big grocery stores, street vendors start to lose their original position. When small streets have no longer been their place, they begin to “withdraw” to the walking street as they hope for something to change, to become better and to help their ‘intrinsically miserable’ life. Those small but firm humans still walk, even on a cold night of New Year; I still see them on the walking street, trying to sell up their baskets to return to their family.” – Trang Nguyen

Beer Ta Hien

Beers (Bia) at Ta Hien street, Hoan Kiem is always a hot spot at night, especially in the summer. Take a tiny plastic stool to sit, drink some beers, chit chat with the Vietnamese and see the disorder of this lively area!

Old Quarter Walking street
From 7:00 PM on Friday to 12:00 AM Sunday, some main streets close to Hoan Kiem Lake such as Dinh Tien Hoang, Dinh Le, Nguyen Xi, Hang Dau, Trang Tien, Bao Khanh,… will become walking streets 24/24 with no vehicles allowed to get in. People interested in going for a walk could visit these streets in the Old quarter to find such Hanoi peaceful moments in the morning and engage in such fun activities (doing yoga, playing Vietnamese traditional games, singing and dancing along Vietnamese music, etc) with the locals in the evening.

Bánh cuốn Hòe Nhai

Stop by this restaurant and you will have to stick your eyes on the masters of Bánh cuốn! They stretched fermented rice batter with a ladle over the surface of the steamer, taking a lid to cover it for a couple of seconds. After that, they meticulously placed the super thin and delicate sheets with a stick onto a tray and filled them with a mixture of cooked meat (mostly pork), minced mushrooms and shallots. Pick the sheets up with your chopsticks, dip them into the sauce and take the first bite!

Hanoi Garden Restaurant

I often get asked about Vietnamese daily meals by tourists across the world. Lots of people traveling to Vietnam raise such questions related to our daily meals. Some wonder whether a typical Vietnamese meal requires rice and broth; some even think we eat Nem - Spring roll every day. To learn what we often eat, you had better go to Hanoi Garden Restaurant. This restaurant is always ranked #1 in my heart for its awesome maze of daily Vietnamese foods. When you dine in this restaurant, you will totally get a complete idea of Vietnamese cuisine in general and Hanoi's in particular. The most delicious dish I tried here is Fried Mudcat with Mango Pickles.

Old Quarter

Going for a walk north from Hoan Kiem Lake, we will be able to enter the maze of Hanoi which is an Old Quarter (Phố cổ). Although there are now far more than 36 interlacing streets, the local still prefer to call it "The 36 old streets" (Hà Nội 36 phố phường) since number 36 was used to refer to the number of workshop areas, not streets in the past. Wandering along the streets right in the roadway under the tangle of overhead power lines for electric power transmission, looking around the sidewalks filled with small plastic stools and tons of scooters as well as motorbikes parked on and challenging yourself to cross the roads would definitely bring you the most memorable experience. Just walk and walk and feel the slow pace of the local life here.
