By the time I visited Hue, I’d been to HCMC and Hanoi, which I greatly enjoyed. But the beauty of Hue and the friendliness of its people showed me a very different side of Vietnam.

The scale of the Hue Festival also suggested to me that its people were capable of organising world class events. And, of course, the food was delicious. Because I was busy making photographs, I only managed to eat at roadside stalls, and yet, the food often tasted like fine dining. Though I thoroughly loved the festival, I’d like a chance to encounter the cultural events close-up, i.e. instead of just having big shows, I’d like to experience more intimate performances and workshops on the various art forms.

When people ponder on what image that the city of Hue may draw in their heads, they are likely to recall the pre-eminence of a typical Asian culture expressed through the divine architecture of the state-of-art. Although there may be a few who regard the existence of the city in another sense, presuming the core of the Central cultural entertainment, rarely do they find the harmony in both. Hence, if what is being sought is where culture is accompanied by the help of advanced technology exposed through the means of entertainment, Hue Festival is a perfect example.

This year, the city makes a wholly refreshing comeback with another annual 2-year event – Hue Festival 2018.

Disregarding the different expressions in forms of entertainment used to celebrate, the meaning of such profound event as Hue Festival 2018 is to honor the one-and-only, the rich and the delicate culture foundation of the city in particular and the whole country in general.

There is nothing much to be found in the deep down history of the Festival itself apart from what has just been told above. However, it is recorded until now by the official festival’s site that the original former of Festival Hue was known as Festival Vietnam-France, which was first held in 1992 by Hue city and Codev Viet Phap in Thua Thien Hue Province. Succeeding the unexpected success of the 1992 Viet-France Festival, the official Festival Hue was passed in October 1998 with the corporation between Thua Thien Hue and French Embassy in Vietnam. Later on, the festival was then held for the first time in 2000 under the name ‘Festival Hue’ as you may hear until now.

Been through exactly 18 years of growth, maturity and earning credit, Festival Hue 2018 still keeps and treasures perfectly the core value of what the original festival might aim at – culture and heritage. Through years and years, people have waited, have expected and have hoped for a new coming of the festival, and they have also kept in mind a question: “Will this time be different from the formers?” The answer is easy: Yes and no. From the view of the form of entertainment or closer to the shows delivered, it is easily seen that Festival Hue is upgraded and refurbished from years to years.

The only thing that stays unchanged is the message brought and delivered: The exploration of the past and the worshiping of culture. With the main theme “Cultural Heritage with Integration and Development, Hue – one destinations, five world heritages”, the festival has succeeded in the very first stage of showing the world “who we are”, “what we do” and “what this is about”.

Photo taken by Dang Hoang

From 27th April to 2nd May 2018, the festival was held as either a national or an international event. This tenth event is the profound inheritance of what has been done and what has been successful through the last 9 seasons of the festival. Not only does Hue Festival is the combination of both old and new, it is also a meaningful playground, “the intersection” of many cultures around the world, disregard of conceptions, religious systems and the expressions of art. Not stopping there, this is of course, also the showcase of Vietnamese culture in general and Hue’s characteristics in particular to the world and by far enthuses the development of tourism and international integration of the country.

Photo taken by Dang Hoang

This is also a very precious event for whoever craves in exploring the deep culture of Vietnam and Hue City. In the show, you will once again experience and encounter numerous events of the past accompanied the city in its history and growth. In those, you may find the interest in the 50th Anniversary of Mau Than Spring Rebel (1968), 230th Anniversary of Nguyen Hue’s Enthronement at Ban Mountain (1788), 25 years from 1993 when Hue Citadel Complex was first recognized as the world’s cultural heritage by the UNESCO, and so on. The festival was held all day long for the total 7 days and was divided to many different stages, at which you might find yourself a great show to enjoy or just simply harmonized with the profound atmosphere and sensation of the city and what the festival might bring. Usually, between each show is an interval of 30 minutes to an hour. Therefore, you can make use of this spare time to wander around and enjoy the spectacular forms of heritage, both material and immaterial that you can find during the whole show in the whole week. The Festival Hue 2018 might have ended but 2020 may promise a greater and better show for you to once again sink yourself in “the intersection of culture”.

Whereas the news speaks of deprecating bus systems, many such vehicles are actually enjoying a revival, and this time they’re no longer hitting the road, but instead crashing the waves of the ocean. Don’t believe me? Come to the Bus Cafe in Thach An beach, Huế (Hue) and have a look!

The Bus Cafe is located on the shores of Thuận An beach, which is only a thirty-minute motorbike ride from the central Huế, and faster by car. Like most others, the cafe has a quite large menu to offer, but it is not the quality of the drinks that sets this place apart, it is actually the unique space in which they are served.

The name ‘Bus Cafe’ derives from the fact that buses play a key role in the cafe’s aesthetics: everything from the ordering counter to tables and chairs is made from parts of a bus! The vehicles there were once disused and (maybe) a little disgusted, but now, after some extensive refurbishment, they not only managed to outlast their usefulness as a means of transport, but also prove a hit with younger customers. In fact, such is the atmosphere which the ornamental buses and the cafe as a whole have managed to generate that many people actually choose to camp there just to extend their experience, and before you know it, a tent-renting service has been born, so now everyone can spend the night in this rather peculiar surrounding.

What’s more, the cafe claims to have the best views of all cafes in Huế, and while that may sound a little presumptuous, it is really not. Why? Simple: it is placed directly the n hot sand and not very far from the water, so you can enjoy drinking and at the same time take in the expansive view of the sea (or even swim in). After all, who doesn’t want to sip some coffee on a comfortable bus seat while leaning against its bonnet and marvelling at the colors of dawn right by the seaside.

Many tourists I met before often think of Huế as a solemn and old place, mainly because of the impression they get from seeing the great Imperial City. The truth is, however, that Huế is changing everyday, and with new ingenuous minds emerging from the young generation comes innovative ideas that put a new image on this ancient city. The Bus Cafe is more or less representative of this trend, so on your next trip to Huế, stop by, have a drink, and see how the city is renewing.

Hue is well-known for its diversity of festivals. One of which is Hue Festival often confused with Festival Hue. They are both important festivals held in Hue, but they do have their own particular features. Whereas Festival Hue is Vietnam’s biggest celebration of culture and tourism, including all amusing sessions such as dancing, traditional activities like kite-flying, arts and calligraphy exhibitions, Hue Festival is another popular cultural event with the aim of honoring cultural and historical values of the city’s former glory.

In 2017, Hue Festival with the main theme ““Quintessence of Vietnamese Craft” – “Tinh hoa nghề Việt” took place in Hue City, Thua Thien Hue Province from April 28 to May 2.

More than 300 artisans on behalf of all famous craft villages throughout Vietnam participated in the festival, introducing their embroidery painting, pottery, fine arts carpentry, conical leaf hat-making, along with other long-standing traditional crafts and high-quality products. This traditional craft festival attracted a large number of Vietnamese people and tourists all over the world to visit. It was also an opportunity for people to learn about Vietnam’s culture, and an incentive for the development of the economy, tourism and services of Thua Thien Hue province and its neighboring provinces.

Bao Ton, one of Maze Vietnam’s photographers born and raised in Hue, was eager to attend the event. Here are the photos he took during the festival to help us see what this Festival was like.

Never in life or at least until this moment have I encountered an interesting local life Huế (Hue). Huế, where everything is at a slow speed that I could have never imagined, offers me probably one of the best experiences.

I once came to Huế as of my admiration for a long-existing city with a rich culture influenced by both the French and Eastern architectures. Before departing, I had actually received a “friendly warning” from a friend of mine living in Huế: “Don’t go or you will be bored to death”. At first, I thought she was just kidding but then I finally realized that it was actually a bit boring as I am kind of an extroverted party goer. The pace of life seemed extremely slow and peaceful as if there would be no crimes or fights. Huế’s life is as semplice and unobtrusive as its culture and people. As a small city with not so many citizens, Huế brings home to mind. I remembered going out on the street at rush hour with a friend who lives in Huế and it seemed like “rush hour” is not a good term to describe such a place like Huế. Mostly in the evening, people like to walk on Trường Tiền Bridge to enjoy the peaceful night on the beautiful Hương River, which literally means “River of Perfume”. Tourists normally take a cyclo around the city to a small China Town, Áo Dài Street and night market.

I reckon that it seems like this city is almost sleeping at 9 pm or maybe 10 pm. However, under Tràng Tiền Bridge or on the night street, there are gonna be lots of people still enjoying their supper. And if you are a “speed lover”, you will be driven crazy because some restaurants’ services are slow to death!

But after all, Huế is still a special city carrying a dignified atmosphere throughout hundreds of years. And I highly recommend it to those who love something “off the beaten track” with no bars, pubs or anything common for a lousy night.

All the photos below are taken by one of Maze Vietnam’s contributor recently living in Hue. She took her camera out and captured all the moments of the pace of life in Hue on a rainy day. All the friendly Hue people are still calm and moving slowly no matter how heavy the rain could be.

Ancient beauty is the thing you can’t ever feel completely if you don’t take your heart in. Let’s take your bag and camera to go around the complex of Hue monuments with me. It has been living immortally for 2 centuries.

The Imperial Citadel is also a park for Hue people as lots of locals visit this place to go for a walk or go cycling.
On some special occasions, the Imperial Citadel becomes a destination for Vietnamese people to join the national and regional festivals.

Needless to say, Huế’s cuisine is among the finest in the country. Believe me, it will blow your mind and then sometimes you will sit and wonder like me: “How come a small city like Hue can have so many kinds of food like this?” Just sitting around and thinking of what you will eat could take the whole day!

Specialties

Coming to Huế, specialties are definitely something that you cannot skip out on your way to explore the attempting cuisine of a new land.

Beef Noodle (Bún Bò)
Beef Noodle, one of the most genuine and typical specialties of Huế, is so widely known that we, both the gastronome and the glutton, would like to call it sincerely with the local name “Bún bò Huế” (Huế Beef Noodle) to refer to the region where it originally comes from. Not as simple as it looks, behind each delicious bowl of beef noodle is hidden the secret recipe through the hands of the tremendously talented cooks who make the dish with their passion and love for traditional cuisine. The ingredients, of course, cannot miss the scrumptious cow’s muscles with hard-boiled pig’s feet and the typical light red consommé adding up to the dish’s attractiveness and temptation. Although the dish itself has already been quite completed, it is easy to be mixed with other ingredients and entremets such as fennel spicing up the smell, shrimp paste strengthening the flavour and chilli powder for “an explosion” of taste and deliciousness. Beef Noodle can be eaten mostly as breakfast, lunch and is especially suitable as “a stomach-warmer” in the winter during cold days. For its long existence and being in favour of many people, hundreds of restaurants have been born to fulfill the love for beef noodle of their customers. However, these few are the most popular for their distinctive charisma and the most delicious Huế Beef Noodle.

Mussel Rice (Cơm Hến)
Another dish that I am sure you would love to try is Mussel Rice (Cơm Hến), the most familiar and delectable dish in the varied menu of Huế’s cuisine. Mussel Rice is also a simple yet appetizing dish of Vietnam’s middle area that is adored by almost everyone and favorably selected as one of their daily main courses. The main ingredient is of course mussels! If not, the dish would not even be named mussel rice. However, not stopping at one ingredient, the cooks still ambitiously want to complete the dish by other kinds of spices and entremets with the most important criteria: cheap but delicious and nutritious. Therefore, roasted groundnut and pig’s skin have been added to stimulate the cereal and meat-sweet smell and flavour as well as creating the perfect combination between the sweet, softness of rice and the crispy, nutty flavour of groundnut and roasted pig’s skin. In addition, the dish is also quite easy to be mixed with other kinds of vegetable such as sour starfruit, Indian taro, dried scallion and banana flower. Believe it or not, you will never forget its unique flavour once you have tried it.

The best address to try a genuine bowl of mussel rice is probably in Mussel Hillock Village (Làng Cồn Hến) though there are many other places that also offer very delicious dishes.

Rice Spaghetti Soup (Bánh Canh)
This may be one of the new dishes that you would love to try right after arriving at Huế. At the first glance, you may get the impression that there is absolutely nothing different about this dish compared to others: still rice noodle, some meat, some vegetable and regular consommé. However, hold on until you actually taste it because it can easily turn you into a “rice spaghetti lover” at the very first bite. What I love about rice spaghetti is that the dish actually brings you a lot of feelings and sensation for food. It is truly the art of the cooks to create such delicious and yummy bowl of rice spaghetti soup from the cheapest and most common ingredients that you can easily get from any market. Rice spaghetti soup can be made from different kinds of rice depending on the choice of the eaters and there are also many famous kinds of rice spaghetti all around Huế City. However, these few have become some sort of “legend” with the longest time of making the dish as well as the most delicious and distinctive rice spaghetti soup.

Photo via nethue.com.vn

Nam Phổ Rice Spaghetti (Bánh Canh Nam Phổ), originated from Nam Phổ Village, has soon become the most famous kind in the country for its unique and absolutely irresistible flavour. Since the time when we were still small kids, Nam Phổ Rice Spaghetti has been the favourite dish of a lot of people in Huế City. Back then, because our parents were still living in poverty, no restaurant could they build to sell rice spaghetti. Therefore, young sisters, mothers and even very old grandmas living in Nam Phổ decided to carry their bamboo frames and went all around the city to sell rice spaghetti. When there was no food and people had to live in shortage, a bowl of rice spaghetti, though cheap, was enough to warm up someone’s heart.

Snakehead Fish Rice Spaghetti (Bánh Canh Cá Lóc): Although its name is quite creepy with the “snakehead” thing, the dish is totally in opposite: delicious, addictive and absolutely mouth-watering. In fact, Snakehead Fish Rice Spaghetti is one of the most favourable dishes of Huế’s people. What makes the dish more attractive than others is the simmered fish meat that is extremely juicy and savoury. The left fish consommé will keep being boiled with bones to make the finishing bouillon used for the dish. Quail eggs and pork pies can also be used along with the dish. Once you have started, believe me, you will not want to stop.

Mrs. Đợi Rice Spaghetti is also a long-time dish, about 30 years old as I recall. The name of the dish was taken after the name of Mrs. Đợi, who makes it. The fact that Mrs. Đợi Rice Spaghetti Soup can be so popular despite being cheap and simply made in a small food stall is because of its distinctive appearance and making process. What you will get at first is just a bowl of rice spaghetti with some kind of opaque consommé, a few shrimps, meat balls and some spices. However, what interests me is how you, not the cook, will make your own bowl of rice spaghetti with the spices and ingredients given. There will be quail eggs, scallion, spice, chilli oil and so on. Then you can mix the ingredients together and season your dish just the way you like. In the end, I am sure you will be surprised with what you have made and I believe it is always better when you can make your own dish, especially when it is totally something new.
Opening hours: 3:00pm – 6:00pm

Address: #27A, Alleyway 20 and #36 Ngô Gia Tự Street, Vĩnh Ninh Ward, Huế City, Thừa Thiên Huế Province

Nhật Lệ Sticky Rice Cake (Bánh Chưng Nhật Lệ)
Sticky Rice Cake has soon been a familiar food to anyone interested in Vietnamese cuisine. Although, for some people, Nhật Lệ Sticky Rice Cake still sounds quite new and unfamiliar, it has actually reached its own popularity to other countries and is in favour of people living far away from their beloved country Vietnam, especially in Lunar New Year. In Vietnam, it is quite rare that there is a person who has never once heard of Nhật Lệ Sticky Rice Cake. The wonderful woman who has made Nhật Lệ Sticky Rice Cake for nearly all her life (she is now about 80 years old), the mother of Nhật Lệ is no one else but “white-haired mother” or also known as Mrs. Bê. Behind each delicious sticky rice cake delivered to the hands of the customers are the masterpiece of seasoning and the perfection as well as the carefulness in ingredient choosing. The rice must be rich and sticky and pork must be juicy; how much rice, how much meat or even how many leaves used for wrapping are restrictively checked. This is why Nhật Lệ Sticky Rice Cake has been easily loved and adored by so many people for its absolutely delicious flavour and being appetizingly prepared.

Nậm Lọc Steamed Savoury Rice Cake (Bánh Bèo Nậm Lọc)
Nậm Lọc Steamed Savoury Rice Cake is probably the most interesting dish at the decline of day. Nậm Lọc is served in small plates that create an appetizingly elegant preparation and appearance. This is also a really great idea because you can actually eat more when eating little by little in small dishes. However, the purpose of the cook when preparing in small dishes is to let the customers slowly sense the sweet smell of bullion and the softness, stickiness of the steamed savoury rice cake. The dish is made of steamed rice powder with ground shrimp powder scattered on top and is eaten with sweet fish sauce. The flavour, just like its name, is savoury yet very balanced so that you can eat until you are fed up with it. I still remembered eating more than 10 small dishes of steamed savoury rice cake and I still wanted more! So take your chance when you come to Huế and eat as much as you can or else you will regret it.

Grilled-Meat Steamed Thin Rice Pancake (Bánh Ướt Thịt Nướng)
If you have once tried Rolled Phở in Hanoi (Phở Cuốn Hà Nội) then you will be quite familiar to this dish. The steamed thin rice pancake is actually made of rice powder steamed into thin layers of phở then they are rolled up outside of grilled-meat to make the finishing dish. The difference is instead of using stir fired beef as the stuffing, the cooks have intentionally and cleverly used pork grilled on hot coal to stimulate the sweet-smelling as well as adding up to the juicy flavour of the pork. The stuffing though simple with grilled pork and salad but when being combined with the sweet fish sauce of vinegary turnip, carrot and a little bit the chilli, the flavour is absolutely and undeniably irresistible. Remember that I have already warned you. Therefore, be careful if you do not want to be a “grilled-meat steamed thin rice pancake worshipper”.

Grilled-Meat Noodle (Bún Thịt Nướng)
Mentioning of noodle, I can ensure that even if you are a foodaholic or not, Grilled-Meat Noodle will never let you down. Formed and born from the love for traditional cuisine, Grilled-Meat Noodle bears the soul and the taste of its own land-mother. From the making process to the seasoning, it is the elegance to the perfection: chopped lemongrass stimulating the taste, delicious roasted sesame rousing the sense of smell and sweet fish sauce savours the flavour. The special thing about the dish is the meat grilled on hot coal, lean and greasy that you can hardly deny the attempting calling of it. The sauce is also very carefully and advancedly made with goose liver, grinded nuts, fish sauce and pepper. This is such a wonderful combination of flavour that I bet you can only like but cannot hate.

Mixed Girdle Cake and Omelet Girdle Cake
Girdle Cake is one of the most favourite snacks of Huế’s teen. The simply crunchy cake’s layer is enough to make you feel excited. The ingredients are also very simple with steamed flour rolled into thin layers with omelet (for omelet girdle cake), pate, dried beef and meat covering on top. Mixed Gridle Cake is more like a kind of noodle with delicious dried beef, quail eggs and vegetable.

Plain Rice Flan (Bánh Khoái)
If you have once tried Bánh Tôm Hồ Tây then Plain Rice Flan, also known as Bánh Khoái, gives you the same impression. The flour is deep fired and stuffed with shrimps, meat and vegetable looking very attempting and mouth-watering. The appetizing yellow color of the crisp cover is just the special thing of the rice flan.

Fried Rice Cake (Bánh Lọc Chiên)
Honestly, I must say, Fried Rice Cake is one of the most interesting kinds of cakes that I have ever known. Asian Fried Sweet Sesame is soft and saccharine; pateso is crispy with hundreds of fried cake layers; dumpling is either steamed or fried and banana cake is just that sweet and yummy.

Green Pea Cake
If this is the first time you have heard of Huế’s Green Pea Cake then you should be prepared to try it now. It is also very widely known as the “Noble Cake” used in the Lunar New Year in Huế. Generally, Green Pea Cake is a very wonderful kind of cakes with a variety of shapes and sizes made similarly to the forms of fruits such as strawberry, mango, grape and so on. It is also very popular in Huế, especially to children for its eye-catching appearance.

Grilled Corn and Steamed Cassava with Scraped Coconut (Bắp Nướng và Sắn Hấp Dừa)
These are quite common foods of Huế that are absolutely enjoyed by all people from the well-to-do families to the normal ones. Eating corns and cassavas has somehow become a kind of custom of Vietnamese people since war time when there was no food and rice at all. Until now, they are still very in favour of most people, especially in winter as effective “cold cures”.

Grilled Fermented Pork Roll (Nem Lụi)
In my opinion, Nem Lụi is something that you absolutely cannot reject. It is so good, so delicious and addictive that every teenager can hardly say “no” when someone asks them out for some nem lụi. Eating nem lụi with a hot chilli sauce is the best thing you can ever experience. I think I will stick around to my nem lụi dish the whole day long and not even bother to leave!

Other delicious dishes

Beside the delicious specialties, other dishes are some kinds of Huế’s unique features that draw the attention of the most picky gastronome with the most regular and common dishes.

Saffron Noodle (Bún Nghệ)
Although the ingredients are of certain simplicity and the dish is not quite of a high-class food, it is still extremely in favour of many cuisine lovers, especially young girls and women for its useful effect of health and skin-beautifying. The dish has this very eye-catching yellow color of noodle stir fried with saffron and chicken’s parts. Vegetable such as coriander is also used to add up to the flavour.

The first impression that you get with the noodle is distinctive. Indeed, this is a very special yet common dish that you would love to try once.
Sticky Rice (Xôi)
If you have been familiar with traveling around Vietnam, then sticky rice is maybe a common dish with a cheap price that everyone can easily afford. Sticky rice is just the dish for anyone, as long as you are hungry or simply having not figured out what to eat for breakfast, sticky rice may be a wise choice for a nutritious and cheap one. The special thing about Huế’s sticky rice is that there are hundreds of flavours and kinds that believe me, you should think beforehand on the way to the stall or else you will not even know what you will choose when you arrive there since every flavour has its own deliciousness. Pandanus, black bean, red bean or peanut sticky rice is people’s regular choice. However, there are also more expensive sticky rice dishes such as chicken sticky rice and pork pies sticky rice in more high-class restaurants.

Snail and Mussel (Ốc và Hến)
These are considered some sort of the most favourable snacks and common dishes of Huế’s people or simply every region in the country, especially in the cold days of winter. All you have to do is waiting for the cook to bring the dish in and then you can start enjoying your little treat of boiled snails and mussels using a small folk to take out the meat and dip it in the hot, delicious fish sauce with chili

Vegetarian Food

It has been a long time ago when there is a custom of the East that people have to eat vegetarian food on some special occasions, especially those who follow Buddhism. However, nowadays, people still enjoy eating vegetarian food, even as their main course of the day. What makes the art of vegeterian food is that you do have the feeling of eating some kinds of meat while in fact, you are not eating meat at all! That is also the reason why so many people enjoy eating vegetarian food that much.

Desserts and Drinks

I am sure your meal cannot be completed without delicious and yummy desserts and drinks. Although Huế is not so famous for its drinks and café, there are still many interesting places as well as palatable desserts that you can enjoy.

Alleyway and Imperial Sweetened Porridges (Chè Hẻm và Chè Cung Đình)
No need to say, chè hẻm is such a popular dish in Huế that no one has never once heard of this legendary and savoury dish. Though no big and slashing restaurant, no shiny sign or advertisement, Chè Hẻm still has its own distinctive feature to be distinguished with the common term “chè Huế”. If you are finding a suitable and delicious dessert for your meal, chè hẻm is definitely what will make you fall in love by its sweetness.

Night Streets (Phố Đêm)
As the city gives its breath to the night and cleanses all these dust of life in the daylight, it becomes more beautiful and serene by its sole lover with its face covered in the alluring makeup of light and sparkle from the night streets. Running 400 meters along Nguyễn Đình Chiểu Street, the night streets will welcome you warmly and formally as long as you enter with three beautiful designed entrances of traditional architectural form lit up by colorful lanterns in the night. Just like what they are called, the “night streets” live their nightlife with excitement and give the city the breath of youth that nowhere can you find the second beat of this unique and youthful concerto. These have long become the dearly home for generations of young people who want to express their thoughts and feelings maybe through a song, a painting or even a poem written on the paper. Acoustic Huế, Fipor, Bazooka and many other young bands are used to gathering here every single night to share their voice to the audience and the sympathetic souls. Especially on annual Huế Festival, more and more things will come to give you an explosion of emotion. Not to mention, you can also be the crowd’s star to give the audience whatever you have got despite a good or a not-so-good singer you may be.

The reason I call them “night streets” despite the fact that they are built solely on Nguyễn Đình Chiểu Street is because of their structure which includes three parts. On the left of Trường Tiền Bridge (Cầu Trường Tiền) are the shopping and cuisine areas. With the total of 122 kiosks of goods filled with Huế’s souvenirs and other kinds of specialties so I doubt that you will return bare hand from the night streets. What interests me about this part of the night streets is the mixed design of all these kiosks: whereas some are plain and simple, the others called “beam houses” (nhà rường) are traditionally and opulently designed. Walking on this path, you will feel like being lost in another dimension of time with all the ancient and reminiscent royal architectures. This is also a good opportunity if you want to try out the delicious Huế’s cuisine such as sweetened porridge (chè), Huế’s beef noodle (bún bò Huế), Huế’s traditional cakes (bánh Huế) and so on. The second part lying on the right of Trường Tiền Bridge is where you can enjoy acoustic and live music from young bands and participate in hundreds of exciting activities in the 3rd February Park. The atmosphere of the right side is totally in opposite to the left. Visiting here, you will instantly feel the beat of young hearts connected to one another by the same passions and interests. The real human bronze statue, portrait drawing (just 10.000vnd/painting) and calligraphy are all offered by young people and students coming from different universities in Huế. To the farther right is the walking street mainly for foreign visitors with high-class restaurants, bars, and pubs.

Especially, coming to the night streets, you can also experience the intriguing feeling of floating on Perfume River (Sông Hương) in the local boats with a cheap price of 10.000vnd/person/round. These boats will take you one way from Trường Tiền Bridge to Dã Viên Bridge but if you ask them to take you to where the ceremonial concert is being held, they will ride you there and return after the show ends. To sum up, it will be such a pity if you do not visit the night streets when arriving in Huế.
Ceremonial Songs on Perfume River (Ca Huế trên Sông Hương)
Ceremonial songs have been the traditional and cultural value of Huế and its people. For Huế, ceremonial songs are its soul and characteristic and that they speak for the heart of the city. Without them, Huế can never be completed and be itself anymore. Huế’s traditional ceremonial songs are the perfect and elegant combination of folk and royal rhythm of the North and South: while the North’s is joyful and exciting, the South’s is covered in a plaintive melody. As soon as the city lights up all of its colors in the night and Trường Tiền Bridge becomes alluring and glittering than ever, those Dragon Boats start setting sail calmly and silently along the flow of Perfume River (Sông Hương). Floating gently on the Perfume’s stream, you will be engulfed in the pleasure of beauty and floating colors of lanterns of the citadel standing out in the night sky. If in the past, artists and musicians just performed traditional songs then at present, modern pieces of melodies have been added in to meet the need of their audience, especially the foreign visitors. You can listen to Huế’s songs in two ways: in the Dragon Boat or in the Imperial Citadel. However, I personally recommend ceremonial songs in the Imperial Citadel since the experience is closer and more real. The price for a shared boat is 100.00vnd for local visitors and 150.000vnd for the foreigns (this price includes listening to two shows from 19:00 pm to 21:00 pm). Besides, there are also other boat renting services such as sightseeing boat tour with 250.000vnd/hour for single boat and 350.000vnd for the double. You can also float flower garlands on Perfume River for luck and protection. People usually say that if you come to Huế but have not listened to its ceremonial songs then you have not come to Huế at all”. Therefore, take your chance to enjoy a unique experience you have ever had on the charming Perfume River.
“Ground” Café (Cafe bệt)
“Ground” Café is another unique feature of Huế City. Simple, friendly and different, “ground” café easily attracts its customers and leaves them the unforgettable impression of a warming Huế. Whether you are a student, a worker, an intellectual or if you are poor or rich, irrespective of your background, “ground” café is a place you can drop by at anytime that no one is rejected or judged. In fact, there are many different “ground” café spots all around Huế City but these three places are far more popular: on the night streets, near Dã Viên Bridge (selling mainly milk tea) and on Tôn Đức Thắng Street (this is the most popular). “Ground” Café on Tôn Đức Thắng is also known as Lake-side “Ground” Café (Café “Bệt” Bờ Hồ). As long as you come here, believe it or not, you will not even notice if it is a café since there is no chair, no table, no sign, just a pack of people sitting around on pieces of cardboard on the ground. This “ground” café spot usually opens in the morning, afternoon and becomes the most crowded in the evening. The menu is also very simple: black coffee (café đen), milk coffee (café sữa), bottled drinks and cigarette with the price that everyone can easily afford. Coming to the “ground” café has soon become the daily routine of Huế’s people. Maybe there is nothing more joyful and relaxing than gathering with your young friends, old friends, girlfriend or boyfriend to have a cup of coffee for just 3.000vnd – 4.000vnd and chit chat the whole night about whatever happening in the world.
Walking on Trường Tiền Bridge
The night falls and the daylight shuts on the shoulders of the city; long shadow silently covers the rooftops of small houses and people rush on their way home after work. Trường Tiền lies down to its “Perfume bed” and starts the colorful night-dream of blue and purple. Still, romantic and calm, it brings different lives and strangers to a coincident encounter and even sometimes connects their fate of a lifetime. Maybe, there is no feeling that is more reminiscent than walking on Trường Tiền Bridge at night, looking at the whole city in the yellow light reflecting on the glass windows. At this time of the day, you will easily see couples of lovers hand in hand walking on Trường Tiền Bridge. You can either walk or rent a bike to ride on the bridge, get some fresh air and a view of the whole city. This is also a favorite spot for Huế’s people for its relaxing and private atmosphere. Trường Tiền Bridge is even more interesting to tourists with hundreds of small food kiosks with delicious snacks such as noodles, sweetened porridge, and baguette on the right-side foot that will easily weaken your hungry stomach at night.

Graceful Huế
“Graceful Huế” is a traditional music show held on 30th monthly at 19:30 pm in Kim Long Village. Coming to Graceful Huế, you will be astonished by the fantastic and wonderful Áo Dài performance and traditional dancing of beautiful girls. Also, ceremonial songs are offered by skillful and accomplished local musicians. Other services such as Huế’s cuisine with lotus teacups, traditional cakes are also in offer for tourists.
Huế’s Children Palace
The Children Palace is one of the familiar places for children in Huế. However, people and children of all ages can also come to enjoy a joyful atmosphere and play all the fun games. Especially at night, the palace is even more crowded since kids and their parents will get together to play in the palace’s yard. There are also many interesting games as well as thrilling ones if you are the one who craves for thrills. Huế’s people like taking their children here in the evening since the air is breezier and more pleasant.
The back though has been considerably destroyed but in general, the stele can still remain its shape with the out-standing ancient architecture. The Imperial Citadel’s Yard and Quốc Học Memorial Stele are favorite playing areas for Huế’s teenagers and the locals also enjoy coming here in the evening. Although there are many activities taking place, the most favorable are skate-boarding and roller-skating. The Imperial Citadel’s Yard and Quốc Học Stele are quite close to each other so you can go from one place to another easily.

“Wake up with determination. Go to bed with satisfaction”. As enough sleep is just as important for good health as good nutrition and exercise, choosing a perfect place to rest your feet and mind is one of the hardest things. However, I bet that you will definitely get that satisfaction because Huế has got just the thing to offer.

Hostel

Hostel, in my opinion, has gradually become a hot trend of accommodation in Huế or correctly speaking: “Homestay”. Starting from the 30s, the hostel has created and marked its own name in the market full of competitive and potential opponents, also known as “hotels” and “resorts”. Just because of its outstandingly unique and special features that you will start wondering: what exactly is “hostel”? Simply, it is where you can lay down your back on the couch, enjoy the summer sound from a tacky radio in a plain bar and rest your feet in an old building with bamboo blinds, flaking off blue paint and a few purple flower trellis hung on the balconies in the middle of a crowded street with your dearly old pals. Hostel is a place, as many foreign friends would like to call, “home”. So if you are a backpacker, a hostel is definitely your stop after all the hardships along the way to conquer those beauties.

Hotel

If hostel is not one of your options or in case you have probably experienced this kind of accommodation before and want to enjoy a more exquisite living space then hotels in Huế are absolutely not a bad choice but rather the opposite.

Hotels in the city center: Huế City offers a variety of hotels from the cheapest to the finest with the first priority of quality and services. If you are a “crowd lover” and fascinate about living in the center with the most exciting activities and the noisy streets, you should probably put these hotels in your list.
