Saigon is an exciting, dynamic and youthful city, but there are more to visit than touristic architectures and locations. To experience the best of this city, you should focus on its little details. And for many people, the network of narrow alleys will always be the best place to explore a maze of exciting yet intimate lives of the local, in stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of anything you may have experienced roaming on the main streets. Here are the most impressive alleys that we recommend you visit at least once during your stay in this cosmopolitan city!

They are loaded from trucks early in the morning, so this is also the most appropriate time to buy the freshest bouquets. It is worth mentioning that the first person to get started with all these things is also a poor person, Mr. Do Van Ut (aka Viet) who fixes motorbikes and operates free rides at the entrance of the alley.

This alley has been home to the Vietnamese-Chinese for more than a century; that’s why you might hear a lot of people speaking Chinese when visiting here. The entrance is usually dim so people must turn on the lights even in the daytime and the common courtyard at the front is often used to set up a small café and parking places for their motorbikes. On entering, you might be amazed at houses built close together with identical Chinese architecture but different eye-catching colors. Also, make sure to give it a try at the old-fashioned Chinese-style glass noodles dinner at the end of the alley.

#1. Ly Tu Trong Apartment Complex

It’s rather surprising that despite its location in the heart of Saigon, Ly Tu Trong Apartment Complex can still keep its quiet and colonial charm – the elevator is the original one from the French colonial period, the type of elevator you only see in movies. The home of many cafes (Cong and Loft being two local favorites), eateries (most notably Bong Cai Xanh - a lovely cafe/diner with a mean lunch menu), art galleries, a cookery center, and multiple shops, the complex is a little alcove of peace amidst the rapidly changing landscape of the city centre.

Toa Tau hosts classes and workshops teaching art, music, creative writing, dancing, and so on. Yet, the main purpose is not to teach you to draw or write, or dance better; but rather teach you how to understand yourself, understand everything around you, and express yourself through a creative medium. It’s an escape, a place to surround yourself with creativity and positivity. Courses are limited, so book before you come there.

Here, meet ethnic Chinese vendors selling you silver earrings and dried fruit, sit down at one of the stalls in the basement and enjoy a bowl of mi xa xiu (noodles with braised pork), listen to the raucous conversations in Yue and Teochew Chinese, or perhaps just stroll through the kiosks and breathe in the air of excitement. It’s truly the embodiment of Chinatown.

The bar has some pretty nice views, most notably of the quaint stone-clad National Bank of Vietnam. With mellow jazz playing, and live band performances almost every night, you’ll soon forget you’re in Saigon and be teleported back to Prohibition-era Chicago. A nice daiquiri, craft beer, or perhaps good ol’ whiskey on the rocks would only further your experience with Snuffbox.

From the phonograph in the corner to the wooden fan humming on the ceiling, it's almost like you’re transported to a Vietnamese relative’s living room, and not a cafe. The cakes and pastries here are all made by the owner, and while it is nothing fancy, the flavor cannot be beaten anywhere else in Saigon.

Located on the second floor of a nail salon, and accessible only via a narrow staircase in the back, it’s a well-kept secret, and many expats would be quick to extol its virtues. The burgers are regarded as the best in the city, so juicy, so fresh, so delicious that you can’t help but dig in. Favorites include the Diana Ross, with Swiss cheese and mushroom cream sauce, and the Little Richard, which is anything but little.

#8. Saigon Superbowl

The first ever shopping mall in Saigon, opened back in 1996, Saigon Superbowl has since been eclipsed by many trendier and newer malls. However, you don’t come here for the shopping - though there are a decent selection of outlets here. You come here for the bowling. The first, and best, bowling alley in the city, it is packed with locals (and a few tourists) looking to have some fun. Prices are a little steep, but it’s definitely worth it. The selection of Korean and Singaporean restaurants are also worth checking out, as well as the KFC on the first floor - Vietnam’s first ever fast food restaurant.
#9. Bia Hoi Huy Beo

Not so much “hidden” as “tourists somehow manage to overlook the place”, Bia Hoi Huy Beo is a decidedly Vietnamese establishment. Bia Hoi is a cheap, lager-like beer that is brewed fresh every day, very similar to Czech Pilsner. More of a beer-flavored water than beer, it’s perfect for those looking to down a few jugs and escape the heat of this city. The food here is decent, with a selection of appetizers and entrees to accompany your alcoholic beverage. Look out for red-faced middle-aged Vietnamese men, going through the tables eliciting toasts, a good old sign of Viet hospitality. (The local version of ‘Cheers!’ is ‘Mot, hai, ba, dzo!’, pronounced ‘Moht, high, bah, yow!’. Keep that in mind. You’ll impress many a local with it.)

“Adventure is worthwhile.” – Aesop.

On traveling to Vietnam, visitors will definitely be amazed by the epic beauty of long blue seashore and mountainous villages. Coming to Phan Thiet, visitors have a chance to admire the rich traditions of local fishing villages and dive into the fresh ocean water. Phan Thiet has many interesting places to go and activities to enjoy as it is one of the hotspots for foreigners.

Visit Fairy Stream (Suối Tiên)

Fairy Stream is one of the hidden wonders in Phan Thiet. Along two sides of the stream are red sand dunes, bamboo forests, and strangely-structured formed white rocks. The stream is ankle-deep and no more than knee-deep even in its deepest parts. Adventurous visitors can also climb to the top of the sand dunes and pitted rock formations, both of which offer spectacular views of red-hued waters and complex stalagmites. For people who feel hungry, there are several food stalls along the way, whereas bars and big restaurants are located upstream.

Take a Motorbike Tour

Believe me or not, this is one of the top rated outdoor activities in Vietnam for many reasons. Firstly, travelers have a chance to make friends with locals since their rider will be an excellent Vietnamese tour guide who speaks English fluently and knows everything about Vietnam. Secondly, travelers will be driven through Phan Thiet- Mui Ne on a fancy motorbike for as long as you want and the drivers will take you to tourist attractions you want to go and explain things to you if you do not know. Thirdly, the registration for a tour like this is super- easy. You just have to go to their website and make an appointment. On the following days, the tour operator will send you emails as to confirm your registration and appoint you a rider. All you have to do next is to choose the location where you want the rider to pick you up, the length of the tour, etc. The process is easy and convenient. Last but not least, the rider will do everything to guarantee your safety during the trip.

Join Surfing, Windsurfing, and Kitesurfing

Mui Ne Beach draws wind sports worshippers from around the world due to its consistent cross onshore winds. On average it has over 200 days a year with winds of more than 13 MPH. The best for windsurfing and kitesurfing time is from October to the end of March and peak time is in December and January when you’ll see a flurry of activity along the entire shoreline. A stack of kitesurfing schools offer lessons to beginners.

Discover the Beaches and Sand Dunes

Mui Ne, Phan Thiet is famous for the beautiful beaches and extraordinary sand dunes. Besides Mui Ne Beach, Phan Thiet also offers Hon Rom ( Hòn Rơm) beach. It stretches along the Red Sand Dunes and often serves as a harbor for fishermen. It is not regarded as a suitable place to swim since sometimes some dangerous strong tides appear. Đồi Hồng – Red Sane Dune (close to Hon Rom) and Đồi cát Trắng – White Sand Dune (24 kilometers northeast away) are the great sand dunes in Mui Ne. They are both wonderful places when it comes to sandboarding. The renting board price ranges from 10 000 to 50 000 VND depending on the time when you visit (the more crowded the place i and your ability to bargain.

Explore Po Sah Inu Tower

Po Sah Nu (in Phu Hai, Phan Thiet) is one of the most important relics of Cham culture in Vietnam. It is famous for its Cham artistic style and cultural activities are held at this place to worship. In 8th and 9th century, Po Sah Inu was used as a place to worship Shiva- one of the deities of Hinduism. In 15th century, this place was also used to worship Princess Po Sah Inu, and there were 2 other towers used to worship Linga and Yoni. In 1991, Poshanu Cham Tower was recognized as national architectural and artistic monument.

Phan Thiet- Mui Ne is one of the most favourite spots for cultural exploration and outdoor activities in Vietnam. It is recommended for visitors to wear their most comfortable clothes as they sometimes need to climb up and down the hills and the weather can be extremely hot, especially in the mid- summer.

The locals are welcoming, culture is unique, activities are interesting,e tc. So why don’t you pack your bag and go to Phan Thiet now?

I had a thought of my Northern mountain region as just a far, distinct land where the ethnic minorities inhabit only. And it is not until I was in high school that I changed my mind. Through pages of wonderful Vietnamese novels and poems I read such as “A Phủ and wife”, “Voice of the ship”, or “Head to the West”, I found myself totally taken aback by the exotic natural beauty here which I seemed to have underrated for a long time. It is not exaggerated to say that creators have put much privilege onto this land, given it all of the most breathtaking landscapes which can be found nowhere else like the amazing terrace fields, great waterfalls, dozen traditional hamlets of Thái, H’Mông, Tày, etc*. As it is impossible for even the most prolific writer to discuss the beauty of one place in a single writing, I’m gonna tell you each destination of the Northern mountain region one by one. In today’s article, I adhere to my recent promise, introduce to you the charming province in the Northwest of Vietnam: Yên Bái.

Lục Yên Jewel Market (Chợ đá quí Lục Yên)

Situated in Lục Yên town, Lục Yên jewel market is the only place that has the tradition of making jewel pictures in Vietnam. Tourists can not only admire the lovely jewel pictures but also learn about its making process. The market here is quite small and open to the public all week round, but Sunday sessions are the most crowded and liveliest. The locals run their business just by putting up some camps called “sạp” in Vietnamese and laying few tables on which hundreds of shining and colorful gemstones are displayed. Should you want to get one, it will cost about VND 100.000 or more, approximately $4.

Urban life has never been easy to any of us that we sometimes just want to leave all the bustling city streets with heavy traffic behind, packaging our belongings and going away to a peaceful and quaint place. The thing is, however, we hardly have any ideas of where to go the moment we decide to be on holiday, do we? Knowing that, I’m giving you a suggestion should you come to Vietnam one day. Mù Căng Chải or Mù Cang Chải is a compact district to the west of Yên Bái, a northern city in Vietnam which I will discuss in details in the next coming posts. Considered as a must- visit destination once you come to the Northern mountainous area, Mù Căng Chải is well- known for the following tourist attractions.

Khau Phạ Mountain Pass (Đèo Khau Phạ)

Khau Phạ Mountain Pass is one of the longest and most crooked roads in Vietnam, situated on Highway 32 with the length of more than 30km. It passes dozens of famous sights such as La Pa Tẩn, Tú Lệ, Chế Cu Nha, etc. At the height of 1200m-1500m above the sea level, Khau Phạ has cool climate all year round with 4 seasons in a single day: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. How amazing it is! This moutain pass is named after a feature of its own: Khau Phạ mountain pass is often covered in the mist that its peak seems to rise from the clouds when seen from far away, and in Thái people’s - people in Vietnam's ethnic minority language in Vietnam (please don’t mistake this for Thai of Thailand), Khau Phạ means “ Sky horn” or “Sky gate”. If you ask me when is the best time to visit this place, the answer is anytime. But as the harvest season sets in in September or October, all the cereals are ripened, you can have a spectacular view from here but be careful as it is really dangerous to make way to the mountain pass’s peak.

From Khau Phạ mountain pass, you will catch the sight of a tiny and "skinny" road that apparently stretches over the sky called Lìm Mông hamlet. Lìm Mông hamlet is a small village that hides itself in mist and clouds. To get here, you can just use small motorbikes for about 2/3 of the trip and then go on foot for the rest because of the rough, crooked, slippery uphill slopes which are a distinct character of Mù Cang Chải. The hamlet is also famous for the breathtaking scenery during crops harvesting season when all corners of Lìm Mông are dyed with the charming yellow of cereals.
