The locals in Vietnam have some expressions or terms to refer to “backpacking”. They say “phượt” or “du lịch tự túc” as “independent travel”, “du lịch ba lô” as “backpacking”, and “du lịch bụi” as “dusty travel”. And the rise of “dusty travel” in Vietnam seems to never end.

Vietnam – the country of Dusty Travel

“Dusty travel” in a sense of backpacking perfectly fits in the place and context of Vietnam. Vietnam caters everyone’s needs from being known as an oasis of relaxation, famous for epic adventures, to offering all the unique experience, not to mention such delicious feasts for your eyes with a perfect blend or balance of flavors. Vietnam is now a backpacker hub and has become one of the most prominent travel destinations in Asia on account of cheap cost of living, friendly and exciting vibes, a wide selection of off-the-beaten-track spots, and much more. In one word, Vietnam is the “Dusty travel” heaven.

However, (or also) in another sense of “Dusty travel”, its literal meaning is “dusty” or “dust”– “bụi” and “travel” – “du lịch”, which means we travel while breathing the dust in. While a lot of people have been writing about living, working, and traveling in Vietnam regarding all the excellent travel highlights, we rarely get to read articles about one of the most undeniable drawbacks – the air pollution in Vietnam, especially in big cities such as Hanoi, and Saigon (HCMC). The air quality index (AQI) has been very high, normally from 150 – 220, ranking on the top of the world sometimes at over 300.

Photo via Vietnamnews

Tourists in electric cars traveling around Hanoi, wearing masks

Photo via: mangthuvien.net – “Ninja lead ladies” who drives Lead bikes and fully dressed

Photo via cuocsongantoan.vn

The air quality gets that worse due to lots of reasons, such as the burning traditions taken from Chinese culture on special lunar days, the breakout of fire in a light warehouse releasing a high amount of fluorescent last year, the excessive amount of pollution resulted from motorbikes (around 7 mill bikes and 500K cars in a big city here!) and cars on the road, the northeastern trade winds carrying all the industrial dirt and dust from China and Hanoi’s neighboring provinces, and much more.

So what’s the solution?

First of all, it is highly recommended to install AQ tracking apps like Airvisual just so you know on which days the AQI in the city is so high that you can avoid by staying indoors. Especially if you are traveling with a baby, an elderly family member, a pregnant woman or someone that has moderate to severe breathing problems, you should be more careful and well-prepared.

If air pollution does not constitute the number one concern, it is as just moderate as it could be. In Hanoi and Saigon, you may have to learn to wear a mask or have your hand cover your mouth while getting a full exposure to the traffic flow out there. Also, doing some outdoor exercises during the day might not be ideal, either. These tiny particles of pollution can burrow deep into the lungs and cause a range of severe health problems. It may result in occasional coughs, sneeze, sore throat, and even worse, some severe respiratory health problems like bronchitis, or lung inflammation. It’s not a fun reality, but it’s the truth.

If you tend to live here long-term, consider using an air filter indoors. But chances are it is going to take more of a toll on your health. However, just as long as you get out of Vietnam’s two biggest cities, you can see the air quality in Vietnam is getting better. It doesn’t mean you have to head for some remote rice paddy villages to get some fresh air, but you can start thinking about other city options including Da Nang, Hoi An, Da Lat, Can Tho, etc.

Da Nang City

Regardless, while air pollution can be a problem in Vietnam, don’t let it hold you back from checking this country.

See the Centre of the backpacker area. Take a brief ride through the area and you’ll notice the contrast of old and new, Vietnamese and western. Pham Ngu Lao is the neighborhood that never sleeps.

Moving on to District 3, we will visit The weapons storage cellar, where you can find a historical relic on Saigon commandos’ feat of battle. Nearly three tons of weapons were kept in the cellar by Saigon Commandos to attack the Presidential Palace during the Tet Offensive in 1968. It is one among many untold valuable exhibits that manifest the brilliant feats of the Vietnamese people and army in their fight for national reunification that became true on April 30, 1975.

Our trip will start in the backpacker District of Pham Ngu Lao where we will have a short briefing on the night activities and then make our way over to District 4. From the other side of the canal, you will see the contrasts of the lifestyle of central Saigon and it’s outer edges. We will proceed across another bridge to catch the sunset over the rapidly growing city center.

Next stop is a restaurant that serves up traditional Vietnamese dishes, including delicious glutenous rice cakes dressed with different meets, peanuts, and leafy green seasonings.

Crossing over into Chinatown (district 5) we will stop by an 80-year-old institution in Saigon. Here several traditional sweet snacks will be served for all to sample.
Can Gio Mangrove Forest Tour

During the war, Can Gio mangrove forest was an ideal place to hide from the attacks of the enemies, which sadly led to the American dropping a huge amount of dioxins on the area and significantly damaging the forest, in an attempt to maintain control. Moreover, the forest is dense and used to be filled with a lot of dangerous animals such as tigers and crocodiles. Now the forest has recovered and is protected by the government and international law. With over 2000 years old, Can Gio mangrove forest contains a high degree of biodiversity, including nearly 160 flora species, 137 fish species, over 700 spineless species, and 40 vertebrate animal species. As a result, Can Gio is the first mangrove forest in Vietnam to be admitted to the World Network of Biosphere Reserves by UNESCO in January 2000.
Time: 8:30 AM finishes around 17:30

Highlights
Can Gio Mangrove forest is regarded as the “green lungs” of the city. This biosphere reserve is located in the coastal district southeast of Ho Chi Minh City. It is an ideal destination for a day trip out of the city, especially by motorbike. The trip gives a great opportunity to admire the eco-friendliness and expansiveness of habitats. The destination is also well-known by both tourists and VC Vet as it used to be very important base in Vam Sac. Its attractions including the Dam Doi (Bat Swamp), Crocodile farms, vast green mangrove forest, and the fresh seafood make it a worthwhile “Saigon Outskirt Motorbike Excursion“ to experience.

Itinerary
In the morning our guide & motorbike will pick you up at your hotel/residence. We will head South of Saigon to Hiep Phuoc port via Nguyễn Văn Linh – Nguyễn Hữu Thọ and leave the bustling city of Saigon behind. Along the way, you can experience the local people at work, ride through the shrimp farms, past swift houses and enjoy the most scenic roads of the area to reach for the Rung Sac ( Mangrove forest ) well-known as VC base during the war.

Travelers then take a boat ride along canals naturally covered with mangrove into the Dam Doi (Bat Swamp). We will get on the rowboat to get closer to the Eco Reserve area. Have you ever tried to fish crab with a fishing rod? Yes, you can try your luck right here. You will reach the core of the Biosphere Reserve of Vam Sat forest where we will visit the crocodile farm and bird reserve.

After your delicious seafood lunch and rest, we will learn how to pass the Cau Khi (Monkey bridge made of 1 or 2 single bamboos poles) as locals do. You cannot miss the panoramic view from the Tang Bong tower. It’s a great opportunity for photos.

In the afternoon, a speed boat takes us back to Rung Sac, we then hop back on the motorbikes to Can Gio beach to visit the stunning local seafood market. You can go swimming if weather and time allow.

Date: Daily group tour

Time: start 8.00 – return 19.00

Itinerary:

Start from Ho Chi Minh City and depart for Tay Ninh where the Cao Dai Great Temple is located. Stroll around the temple, which is regarded as one of the impressive architectural structures in South-East Asia. Maybe, the Cao Dai sect is strange to many people as it’s a special hybrid of Buddhism, Christianity, and Confucianism. At its entrance is the Left Eye of God, which is the Cao Dai religion’s symbol.

After seeing the scenery of the temple, you will attend the midday ceremony organized by the Cao Dai followers to learn about the religious rituals. Go to lunch at a local restaurant, and then be driven towards Cu Chi Tunnels. Be introduced to a short video which is also an overview of the Cu Chi’s history and Vietnamese endurance.

Start discovering some permitted areas of the tunnel system, which is seen as an underground village in Ho Chi Minh City. There are field hospitals, weapon factories, kitchen, command centers, storage facilities, and trap doors. This system was made by hand, which proved the Vietnamese’s intelligence and creativity in the Vietnam war. Enjoy cassava (the main food of Vietcong during the time of war) and sip tangy tea.

Return to Ho Chi Minh City and end your trip.

Cu Chi Motorbike Tour

(You can ride the motorbike/ scooter on your own, or our tour guide would do the job with you sitting behind)

Highlights
The trip to Cu Chi is a combination of culture and history. There you will see how the Vietnamese people resisted both the French colonization and the American invasion.

Itinerary
A one-day adventure tour by motorcycle to the famous Cu Chi Tunnels. The tour will depart from District One and head north-west out of the city. Along the way, you will see some amazing countryside views, rubber tree plantations, rice fields, and the occasional water buffalo.

Upon getting to the tunnels, you will explore this underground labyrinth of tunnels with our guide taking you to the original size entrance, crawling through the bottleneck and generally learn about what life and war were like for the Viet Cong who lived in these tunnels. The Cu Chi tunnels are a whopping 250km in size. The network, parts of which were several storeys deep, included countless trapdoors, constructed living areas, storage facilities, weapon factories, field hospitals, command centers, and kitchens. It promises to be an educational and unforgettable experience.

After Cu Chi, the tour stops at a nearby restaurant where beef is the main highlight. It is a good chance to explore local cuisines such as barbecue steak, fresh spring rolls with beef and a variety of mints, barbecued ribs with lemongrass, and beef hotpot. What could be better than sitting back, checking out some photos taken in the tunnels or the bike ride while waiting for your steak and enjoying an icy cold Saigon beer!

After the French defeated Nguyen Dynasty in Danang, the French spread their power in the rest of the region. In the late 1800s, the capital of the French colony of Cochinchina was at Saigon. The city then turned out to be a hub of French cosmopolitan colonial commerce and culture. A lot of sites here still remain from the years of occupation. As colonized Saigon in the 20th century, the French culture understandably has left various marks on the city, all of which remain places of interest to date

Here are the 10 French colonial sites all Saigonese would recommend you.

Notre Dame Cathedral Saigon

Photo via tripzilla.com

Opening hours: 8:00 a.m – 18:00 p.m

This attraction is arguably a representative of the religious influence the French have made on Vietnam during their invasion. The cathedral was built to offer French soldiers a place for performing rituals. Built with bricks, glass and various other materials brought from France, this building has proved durable and has called for little reconstruction since its completion in 1880. Its design was chosen from 18 propositions. The architect J. Bourad was chosen for his style, a mixture of neo-Roman and Gothic. Nowadays, Notre Dame cathedral is considered a must-visit by tourists from domestic and abroad as well. Furthermore, as it is located in the heart of Saigon, the Cathedral is an ideal starting point for a Sai Gon tour. Moreover, the Vincom shopping center and Parkson mall are only a few minutes away on foot, while other attractions such as the Saigon Central post office are nearby, so the Cathedral is a perfect start for a journey around Saigon.

Once inside, the view is even more spectacular. There are 6 columns on each side, which represent the 12 apostles of Jesus Christ. Behind them are over 20 altars with small statues of the saints. The main altar is made of pure jade, with carvings of the angels underneath. The wall is decorated with 56 colored glass windows depicting characters and stories in the Bible.

As the biggest one in Saigon, Notre Dame Cathedral can house 1200 people at most.

Outdated as handwritten letters are, they still mean a lot to Saigonese, particularly those over 50. The post office was built by the French in 1860. Designed by Gustave Eiffel, father of the Eiffel Tower, the building instills a feeling of nostalgia in all people who lived through the 20th century. Nowadays, it often acts as a reminder of those days and a perfect background for tourists. However, the busy, energetic atmosphere was preserved. Features such as the information desk can still be found where they were in the previous century.

The 38 working desks are ready to answer questions on delivering mails and posts. On the left side, tourists can have a glance at the time-honored phone booths.
The French also built educational facilities in Saigon. Initially used as a monastery named “Lasan Taberd”, the building was later used for educational purposes. The school consists of four blocks, from A to D, the last one remaining the same and unchanged throughout the years. There are two playgrounds, both with a lot of trees and space for numerous activities. The yellow-painted walls are mostly kept original, while some sections such as the building on the right of the entrance were installed to fit the enormous number of students of roughly 5000. The school is another building that has stood the test of time without calling for too much reconstruction, which illustrates the durability of French materials.

Founded in 1875 by Father Henri De Kerlan, Lasan Taberd was first used to house abandoned children. The old blocks were constructed under the provision of Father Mossard. In 1949, it had 1200 students. In 1975, the school was then transferred to the city’s department of education.

As the entry is restricted to students, parents and school members only, visitors should come during the summer to witness another archetype of French architecture in Saigon.

Without previous knowledge of the place, anyone can mistake Ho Chi Minh City Municipal Theatre (Saigon Opera House) place with an opera house in Paris because of its Gothic style. All materials were transported by plane from France and all external and internal features were designed by French architects as well. The high-quality sound and lighting systems provide 1800 viewers with spectacular performances, ranging from plays to Vietnamese cai luong and live shows of modern music.

Constructed in 1900 by the three architects Felix Olivier, Ernest Guichard and Eugene Ferret, the theatre bears striking similarities with its Parisian counterpart Petit Palais. However, many external features were removed in 1943 due to criticism of their being unnecessary and showy between the two world wars. Some of them were later restored, for example, the two statues of Venus on the entrance. This change was made in the event of the city’s 300th birthday in 1998.

Ben Thanh Market

Undoubtedly, this market must be mentioned, since it is the city’s icon. No matter how many luxurious supermarkets you’ve been to, Asian market like Ben Thanh is a must-try. There’s a wide variety to offer: food stalls serving portions made on the spot, vendors selling hand-made souvenirs, handicrafts, grocery, clothe shop, etc. Vietnamese specialties such as banh xeo, banh cuon, banh beo, cha gio, hu tiu, and when the night comes it is much more exciting. Although most of the stalls inside are closed, sidewalk restaurants are open and attract flows of tourists. The lights, the crowdedness, the noises, the sound of customers bargaining, and so on all contribute to the liveliness of Ben Thanh market. However, if you mind being slightly overcharged, visiting the market early in the morning is suitable, for the sellers believe easy transactions bring about good luck for the whole day. One problem is the presence of pickpockets, so pay attention to your belongings, or better not bring anything valuable or important to the market.

Photo via img.vietnamplus.vn

What's interesting is that the French built the market on the grounds of a destroyed riverside market in 1870 and named it Les Halles Centrales, before changing to Ben Thanh in 1912. This attraction has witnessed many ups and downs of the 300-year-old city of Saigon, which makes the market its symbol in most travel guides and publications.

This palace is of much more historical significance as it marks the independence of Vietnam from both France and the U.S.A. Constructed from 1868-1871 by the French colonizers, this building was used for housing many powerful officials of the colonial government since 1955. During his stay, the Palace witnessed various political fluctuations, including public protests and even bombing, after which the left side of the site was totally destroyed. former President Diem then ordered the reconstruction of the Palace, but could not stay for a single day in his new house for a single day before his demise in 1963. As a result, Nguyen Van Thieu, the second president, became the new owner for the following 12 years. On 30/4/1975, two tanks crashed into the main gate and the exit of the Palace, forcing Nguyen Van Thieu and all members of his Cabinet to surrender. This moment went down in history as one of the greatest and most memorable days of our nation, putting a full stop to the colonization of the Americans.

Feel tired yet? Maybe it’s time for a comfortable night in the Hotel Majestic Saigon. Built in 1925, the hotel underwent various extensions and turned into a six-storey five-star masterpiece overlooking the Sai Gon River. The fact that this building is already over 90 years old may surprise any tourists, for the luxurious design, the gold adornments, and individual balconies can be mistaken with a classic European hotel. It comprises 175 rooms ( 76 Superiors with a view of the city, 38 Deluxe Pool View and 32 Deluxe River View, 20 Junior Suite and 9 Majestic Suite). Any nostalgic traveller will enjoy the classic decoration inside the rooms. High-quality service provided by professional hoteliers is at your disposal. On the top floor is the Prima Hall- which has a capacity of 250 people for big events and meetings. Right next door is the Blue Saloon A&B, which suits small gatherings perfectly. In case you’re a bit hungry, what the Serenade Restaurant has on its menu definitely will whet your appetite.

The hotel was built by one of the richest men in Saigon- Gia Dinh back then- a man named Hui Bon Hoa, who has his roots in China. Aside from Hotel Majestic, he also patronized the construction of various other buildings, including the Museum of Fine Art, Tu Du hospital, Binh Tay Market, etc. These contributed greatly to the new images of Saigon in the early 1900s.

The museum is set inside a French colonial villa. The first floor exhibits pieces of contemporary arts, while a variety of sketches and pictures depicting the Vietnamese’s resistance against the colonizers can be found on the second floor. Moreover, artifacts from other cultures that made their mark in Vietnamese history, namely Khmer, Cham and India. These are between 1400 and 400 years old. Also noteworthy is the pieces of “combat art”, whose artists experienced battles in real life and reflected what they had witnessed on battlegrounds.

In recent years, however, the museum shows big improvements in the diversity as well as the quality of artifacts on demonstration.

This is another building by Hui Bon Hoa, the Chinese-born businessman and also designed by the same French architect as the Hotel Majestic. Near the entrance, visitors cannot fail to notice the wrought iron scroll word “HBH”.
Address: 110-112 Vo Van Tan, District 3

That’s nearly 770 billion VND! With materials brought from Europe, mainly France, this house was constructed in the early 1900s and remains largely undamaged after over a century. Facing 3 of the most crowded streets in the downtown area - Vo Van Tan, Ba Huyen Thanh Quan and Nguyen Thi Dieu, Phuong Nam is expensive not only for the luxurious French style but also its “golden” location. The outside is a mixture of Western architecture and Eastern style while the interior is furnished with luxurious antiques. The house consists of two floors with dozens of large windows to enjoy the view of the city center.

Photo via imgs.vietnamnet.vn

Considered one of the most spectacular and time-honored buildings in Saigon, this house took over a decade to find a suitable and wealthy enough buyer before being purchased at the aforementioned price. The new owner, however, wished to remain anonymous. Rumour has it that the house was bought by a foreign corporation. One concern expressed by the previous owners, Mrs. Dang Kim Chi and Mrs. Nguyen Kim Sa Dang was that the new owner may use the house for economic purposes or may even pull it down, which is a great loss for the whole city. However, to date no damage or change has been made yet. Visitors can look around the outside of Phuong Nam for a small charge. The inside, however, is still a bit of a mystery because entry is not allowed.

Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee

It’s pretty easy to guess when the building was constructed, as the Gothic style is clearly expressed. Designed based on the concept of a bell tower by the French architect Femand Gardes, its construction took more than a decade, from 1897 to 1909. It’s also a mixture between Renaissance French and Italian style.

Initially named Hootel de Ville by the French, the site was turned into the people’s committee of our city after 30/4/1975 when Vietnam was officially independent and united. The building has witnessed many political events such as the protests in 1937 and 1950 when workers demanded for jobs and higher wages and various meetings

The building is symmetric, with the bell tower as the base line and our nation’s flag on its top. Furthermore, a carving of a woman and two children fighting a lot of carnivores. Right in front of the building is a statue of Uncle Ho, our beloved leader. At night, especially on during we ekends and holidays, hundreds of Saigonese would go skating, dancing or simply walking in the special area for entertainment in front of the committee. Also at this time of the day, the beauty of the building is completely revealed. One drawback of this site, however, is that entry is restricted to officials, so you won’t be able to discover the interior.

Photo via thaihungthinh.com.vn

The French, over the course of their invasion, have indeliberately left some invaluable gifts in terms of historical significance as well as beauty. As no words can describe these attractions sufficiently, so you should go and see them yourselves!

Yoko Cafe

Yoko is an extraordinary venue with a mix of both evening screenings and excellent performances from local and foreign musicians. The only downside seems to appear when you are allergic to cigarettes as the place allows smoking inside. Other than that, I have nothing to say about this place but praises: warm, cozy, and good music.

The usual image of Saigonese men reading the newspaper while sipping some coffee can be seen anytime, anywhere: from early in the morning to midnight, from the pavement to the luxurious coffee shops such as Starbucks and Highlands. What is considered the norm, however, represents an irreplaceable piece of Saigon’s culture.

History and Culture

Presented to Vietnamese people in 1857 by the French colonial government, coffee soon got into mass production and became the main source of income for our country in the 20th century. Despite being interrupted in the Vietnam war, this industry made a comeback and flourished throughout the nation. Coffee remains as an irreplaceable drink for Vietnamese people, particularly Saigonese. The typical coffee cup would include coffee, milk, and ice. Strong coffee is dripped from a small filter into a cup, approximately one-fourth of which has been filled with condensed milk. After a small talk while waiting for the coffee to drip, all you need to do is to stir the mixture mildly and enjoy the taste bit by bit. Even though the cup may be no larger than your hand, this specialty can by no means be drunk quickly. Unlike milk and orange juice, coffee offers people a chance to escape from the hustle and bustle of the urban life, rather than a healthful drink to quench your thirst

As they are quite diverse, different types of people enjoy going to different types of cafes: those who prefer a friendly, informal atmosphere prefer street coffee, while artistic wanderers are suited to cafe gardens. And if you want a wide variety to choose from, café apartments are not to be ignored.

Although they were initially built only for accommodation, these “flats”’s inhabitants decide to open coffee shops, each with its own decoration. For the downtown area is increasingly dominated by luxurious, majestic brands, it is much easier for small business to operate here. Regardless of the limited space, customers appreciate these coffee shops for their affordable price, creativity in design and good products. Their owners, mostly artists, or simply art fanatics can turn the previously boring, monotonous themes into an attractive and cozy area. Each creates its own impression: a nostalgic feeling with old subjects on display, a festive vibe with colorful decorations. Some even paint pictures of fictional characters to attract anime fans.

Here are our favorite café apartments in Saigon. They are truly local hidden gems in the city that you should visit.

1. Nguyen Hue Apartment Block - 42 Nguyen Hue Street

Built in the 20th century, this block used to house government and military personnel, including US advisors ad naval officers before and after 1975.

Visitors often wander floor to floor up the twisting stairs looking for something that suits their taste. As there are options galore, make sure you have a look through all the cafés

Before stepping into the block, don’t forget to take a photo of it from the other side of the Walking Street. The combination of lighting from all the cafes at night surely will take your breath away.

The ground floor is occupied by the Fahasa bookstore, the left side of which lies the small entrance to the Café apartment. It is a bit hard to find due to the electrical cables and signs.

Once inside, the building is like a maze. Keep to the stairs, or just take the elevator. The first café you bump into is the Saigon Vieux (2nd floor), where suits anyone looking for a romantic landscape. The swing reminds customers of childhood memories, while balcony looking over the Walking street is a perfect place for a short chat. Right next door is a fusion of fashion boutique and café, the Balcony Cafeteria.

Upstairs is a perfect place for a dessert. Apart from traditional coffee, Mango Tree also offers a good choice of ice cream and bingsu - a Korean dish consisting of ice shavings, sweetened condensed milk, fruits, Korean rice cake, cereal flakes and ice cream. A few meters away is The Maker, which stands among the most popular coffee shops in the area. This is more of a café-workshop, for it gives visitors an arty vibe.

On the fourth floor is Partea. Heavily influenced by English style, this tearoom allows customers to choose from an encyclopedic section and even drink in an English teapot.

There are far more to explore upstairs. Perfect examples are Metsign Café –a utopia for European style fanatics and Boo Café, a milk-tea shop with playful interior and The Letter Café – specially designed for Japanese culture’s enthusiasts.

However, the coffee apartment is not just about coffee. There are numerous fashion boutiques (e.g Baddest Blue -3rd floor, Maison De Jenny- 4th floor, etc.), some furniture shops and a jewelry store, perfect for window shopping. You should spare at least one evening to explore the apartment with all these activities!

2. Pasteur Apartment Block–158 Pasteur Street

Located on Pasteur Street, another tourist quarter filled with fast food restaurants in District 1, this block seems pretty old and insignificant on the outside. However, the interior is far more lively. The spiral staircase provides a perfect background for a shot.

The most well-known cafés here are She Café and Secret Garden.

Photo via imgs.vietnamnet.vn

She Café is highly recommended for single ladies for its quiet, tender atmosphere. In particular, the place is furnished with small-sized sets of tables and chairs, each with a flower vase. What’s more, portraits of beautiful women such as Angelina Jolie, Julia Roberts, Marily Monroe and Princess Diana all the more honor women’s virtues. Despite being not so spacious, this design can create a feeling of comfort. Certainly, this indoor coffee shop remains at the top of the must-try list for energetic young ladies making the most of their youths.

Photo via media.foody.vn @She Cafe

Secret Garden, in contrast, provides families and close friends with a chance to gather. This café-restaurant also serves Vietnamese specialties and seafood in large portions for a group of at least 4 people to enjoy. After a long chat with homies, customers can comfort themselves watching the starry sky and Saigon’s nightlife while the gentle winds give them a good massage.

3. Ton That Dam Building - 14 Ton That Dam, District 1

Known as the most time-honored apartment block in Ho Chi Minh city, it was built in 1866 by the French, thus having some French influence in style. After the Vietnam War, it was given to government officials, whose families still live there now.

Photo via imgs.vietnamnet.vn

The old age and historic values turned it into a tourist destination. Consequently, some flat owners saw this as an opportunity to open up cafes and fashion shops with vintage style. Others soon caught up and turned what was simply a block into a frequently crowded area.

Photo via jimmyeatsworld.com/

Located on the 1st floor, Banksy Studio is a perfect mixture of West and East. The traditional teapots are tastefully placed among the colorful furniture. Since the manager and his staff are knowledgeable about tea, they can give instructions on brewing your own drinks, which cannot be a more rewarding experience. Though it is arguably the best place to explore cultures, non-smokers are not well advised to go here, for smoking is allowed.

Photo via tea-1.lozi.vn @Banksy Studio

The Other Person Coffee on the 2nd floor, however, is radically different in style. All the objects resemble Japanese culture, while “waiters” are dressed in kimonos like geishas or anime characters. Since its operation in 2012, this café has never stopped appealing to anime and cosplay fans in the neighborhood.

Photo via awol.junkee.com

If you are looking for a sweet, sugary and a bit unorthodox dessert, nothing suits you better than The Mockingbird (4th floor). The specialty here - coconut ice cream mixed with pear and wine- is not something to be forgotten. Likewise, Coke Float makes visitors’ mouth water with the funny, fatty look. Regrettably, this image cannot maintain for too long before the cream melts and turns the drink into a hideous sight. What’s more soothing than enjoying a luscious dessert while watching the unceasingly exciting life of our country’s biggest city?

4. Ly Tu Trong Apartment Block- 26 Ly Tu Trong Street

Another café apartment in District 1! This one is situated at the intersection of Dong Khoi and Ly Tu Trong street. As it is just opposite the luxurious Vincom Centre, the background cannot suit you better for a good pose! Inside you can find bars, pubs, galleries, second-hand clothing shops, and, of course, cafes on offer. Styles range from classic to modern as you wander from floors to floors. Also constructed by the French, it is a symbol of great influence from their architecture, which can easily be seen in the staircase and the old lift. Unlike others, Ly Tu Trong apartment block has not undergone much reconstruction, therefore looks relatively more original. Nonetheless, there has been little, if any, deterioration.

The Le Xuan art gallery, besides catching western travelers’ eyes, helps decorate the hallway with its stunning oil paintings.

Cong Café reminds nostalgic adults living in post-war years of those hard times. Enjoy the coffee and see the streets from the balcony. Don’t forget to look around to discover what your parents/ grandparents described as something “today’s kids never know how hard it was!”

Photo via media.foody.vn

The Loft on the same floor is another good choice for visitors. Ice-blended, soda and fruit juice are on the menu to freshen your day. This also serves dishes for the main course: European dishes like pasta are fantastic! One feature that makes The Loft stand out is the clock-like window. This European object has acted as an icon for this café, attracting both city dwellers and tourists. In addition, jazz music is carefully selected by the owner to create an artistic landscape, so having lunch here would be something you cannot resist.

Bong Cai Xanh, despite being a cafe, is mainly known for main courses. A nutrient-rich meal in the vintage atmosphere here will suit office workers well.

Too much food and drinks already? Try shopping or photography. Saigonese love both. There are detailed instructions in the hallway, so getting lost will not be a problem. Otherwise, just wander to a random place. Photographers can help you with some memoirs of the trip, while shops have a variety of souvenirs for your friends.

5. Thai Van Lung Apartment Block, Thai Van Lung & Nguyen Du street

This one may be a bit different since the hallway is dark and a bit creepy. Still, this is all the more interesting for intrepid, curious visitors.

Cafes in this block are typical of Saigonese coffee culture: simple decoration. Reflections of this city’s culture can be seen anywhere. There are paintings, wooden doors, black and white TVs, and live acoustic music. For middle-aged adults willing to liven up their youth, there cannot be a more ideal place.

Bang Khuang Café, which was previously an old, abandoned flat, can revive memories of the good old days in every elder Saigonese. Listen to the door creaking, the people chatting. Look at those shelves and indoor hanging plants. Bang Khuang may have limited space, but the new owner managed to re-furnish and redecorate the flat to offer customers the airiest place possible. The warm and charming lighting from lanterns, with its focus on the paintings, turn this place a heaven for book readers. Beside the authentic homemade coffee, give the main courses a try.

Nguoi Sai Gon Café has its walls full of photographs, paintings and meaningful sayings about life. Music, sets of teapots and other potteries of the pre-1975 style give foreigners an overview of the city’s history. In the evening, several invited artists give live acoustic performances, mainly pre-war pieces.

All the destinations above, previously boring, monotonous flats, were transformed into hot spots for both local people and tourists.

Amidst the cold and unforgiving concrete jungle that is Saigon, there’s still love if you look hard enough. Whether you’re looking for romance, or spicing things up with a special someone, we’ve got you covered. Here are some ideas to help you out – these are a couple of the most romantic places in Saigon.

Anh Sao Bridge (Cầu Ánh Sao)

Decorated with thousands upon thousands of LEDs, Cau Anh Sao is a wonderful place to bring your special one along. Stroll among the ever-changing colors and the water fountains surrounding the bridge, and indulge in an atmosphere only seen in Korean dramas. It doesn’t matter if you’re on a first date or getting engaged, Cau Anh Sao is a perfect destination for you and your partner.

Photo via cms.hallovietnam.vn:8080

Address: District 7

Saigon Cruise Ship

Have a delectable meal on the Saigon Cruise Ship, as it slowly passes the Bach Dang River. Let the cool breezy air hit you, and mellow classical music serenade both of you as the warmth from your hearts settle. Simply delightful. (Tip: Always choose the top deck, as the two bottom decks are too loud and chaotic for any romance)

Photo via citypassguide.com

Address: Bach Dang Wharf, Ton Duc Thang Street, District 1

Turtle Lake (Hồ Con Rùa)

Ho Con Rua – or Turtle Lake – is an artificial lake in the heart of the city. Well, was – it’s been drained, leaving behind a shallow pond of sorts. You might think that such a location is unsuitable for romance, but alas, you have made a mistake. Come here in the evening, and join the hordes of young Vietnamese couples enjoying an intimate conversation over some banh trang nuong – Vietnamese pizza, whilst being surrounded by blazing motorbike horns. It’s a quintessentially Saigon experience.

Photo via static.mytour.vn

Address: District 3

Notre Dame Cathedral

The younger sibling of the famous Notre Dame in Paris, the Notre Dame in Saigon is pretty impressive in itself. A beautiful brick cathedral, the Notre Dame is often used as a backdrop for lovers taking their pictures, or even married couples who get their wedding photos taken here. Hold each other’s hand as you watch the pigeons soar from the little park in front of the cathedral, or come inside and marvel at the colonial architecture masterpiece.

Photo via media.foody.vn

Address: 1 Commune de Paris, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1

C’est Moi Café

One of the very few cafés left in this city that still retains a quiet charm to it, C’est Moi is a French-influenced romantic hotspot. Cozy up with an amour here, savour the fine classical music, and enjoy Parisian coffee and pastries. The food and drinks are super nice, and while the price is a little bit steep, you get what you pay for. C’est Moi is a little hideaway, for those of you tired of the loud metropolis.

Photo via 4.bp.blogspot.com

Address: 126F Phan Dang Luu Str., Ward 3, Phu Nhuan District

Trois Gourmands

The French sure know their romance. Situated in a quiet villa in District 2, Trois Gourmands delivers on all fronts. A romantic location, exquisite French-Indochinese fusion cuisine – with dishes such as foie gras spring rolls, lamb shoulder or sautéed beef with truffles – and a fine selection of wine and cheeses to accompany your meals will make the dining experience at Trois Gourmands heavenly. Book a romantic candlelit dinner with your loved one, or choose to dine amidst the stars. The price is rather expensive, but again, you get what you pay for.

Address: 39 Tran Ngoc Dien Str., Thao Dien Ward, District 2

Ho Chi Minh City Opera House

Ah, now we’re talking about the highlife. Hosting events such as concerts, plays, operas and orchestral performances, the Opera House is a wonderful night out for a couple. (Inquire their website for any future dates) Sit back, and marvel at a splendid show. And if you’re not in the mood to pay top money for a show, there’s a stall that sells peach tea for only 15 000VND near the Opera House – so grab a tea or two, and mingle in the crowd. Whatever you choose to do, you’ll definitely enjoy it.

Saigon Saigon Bar

A timeless classic for those looking to impress their beau, Saigon Saigon’s colonialistic influences and inviting atmosphere is perfect for couples. Find yourself an intimate spot in the corner, or take a seat in the rooftop courtyard overlooking bustling Lam Son Square. Live music begins from 9 pm, and Saigon Saigon has a fine selection of cocktails, beers, and liquors, as well as an extensive dining menu.

Share a delightfully luscious Bloody Mary, or the sultry and aptly-named Sex on the Beach, and let go of your inhibitions. Who knows what will come?

Photo via d1v471jzilqnl0.cloudfront.net

Chieu Cafe

Trinh Cong Son’s love songs have long transcended the realm of a simple melody – they have become something entirely different, something that evokes deep, raw emotions that are best left untouched. And what better way to bask in the purity of such emotions, especially with someone you love, than over a cup of coffee? Come to Chieu, a quaint little cafe tucked inside an alleyway on Cao Thang. Founded in 1966, the humble cafe has been heralded as a haven for Trinh lovers ever since. Everything here is a reminder of the good old days, from the wooden walls to the antique coffee cups. Sit on one of the old-timey chairs, listen to Trinh Cong Son melodies over the gramophone, and feel the ambiance surround you.

If you want to have a great time with your partner in a romantic bar, you had better go to the Rooftop Pool Bar. It is a fantastic bar lying up on the roof of the Hotel des Arts Saigon. This destination has not only a large swimming pool but it also offers all the good cocktails and light snacks along with the lively vibes coming from the lounge music and spectacular views of the city.

Though most known for its state as one of the biggest key industrial zones of Ho Chi Minh City, Thu Duc District located on the outskirt of the city can be taken into account as an incredibly ideal spot for both local and foreign travelers who are looking for something “off the beaten track”. If you are one of those, do not hesitate to have a look at some of the most famous attractions listed down below by a truly local girl living in Thu Duc at the moment.

Nam Thien Nhat Tru pagoda

Having visited Hanoi a couple of days ago and still missing the special architecture of that “One Pillar Pagoda” whilst standing in the middle of Saigon for the time being? No worries! Let our Saigonese show you the Southern version of it!

Best known for its structure created in the exact same way as the original “One Pillar Pagoda” or “Chua Mot Cot” in Hanoi, “Nam Thien Nhat Tru pagoda” was built in 1959. The name given is literally defined as “the one and only pillar in the Northern sky”. Being designed in compliance with Mahayana, one of the two schools in Buddhism classified based on their difference in scheme, concept, and tradition, a small lotus-shaped temple is placed in the middle of a lake with 625 square meters named “Dragon’s eyes”. One can plainly recognize all of the vivid sculptures displayed inside out of the main hall such as Goddess of mercy, or Happy Buddha and Shakya Muni.

Every single element seen at the small temple is simulated identically to the one in Hanoi regarding of tiles, patterns, and decoration. The only factors that individualize this Northern version are material (concrete) and size (smaller), while the original temple was made of ironwood and bigger in size.

Thu Duc stork park

Getting fed up with the blustering atmosphere with tons of honking sounds chasing you all over the city center? Already heard of a peaceful and quiet Mekong Delta but still have no time for a visit?Relax, we are here to help!

During the peak season from September to April, a huge number of storks are all clustering to this enormous forest considered as a natural ecotourism site in the suburbia of Saigon. Integrating with fresh green lines of bamboo, a massive natural lake, rustic earthy trails and footpaths, the whole big area is waiting to turn your hectic daily life into a tranquil childhood.

The most magnificent moment for bird-watching is probably at dawn when flocks of storks move out of their branches, spread out their wings wide and spot out some preys near the lake or shoal ponds. If you want to catch the best angle for your shot or just simply look for an eye-catching view, do not hesitate to hire a ten-seat boat to the middle of the river with only VND 80.000/per.

In case of excessive hunger and fatigue after spending the whole morning in the park, visitors are able to take a short nap on hammocks hung from trees and enjoy the finest Vietnamese home cooked cuisine offered by Mr. Tu De such as deep-fried crunchy elephant-eared fish, frogs stir-fried with coconut milk, etc.

College town – Làng Đại Học

Intriguing as it seems, Ho Chi Minh City College town will not drive any of you to despair by its uniqueness and vivid nightlife. Granted with charming scenery, the town is not just known as a far-off land where national universities of the state are located, but also as a gorgeous background for wedding photoshoot.

Especially when darkness comes and the whole area is lit up, innumerable youngsters, mostly students, round up at every single corner of the street for shopping, chatting, wandering off, eating, drinking and even singing. Food and beverage of all kinds can be found here, from beer to milk tea, from low-cost noodles to pricey hotpot.

If you ever wonder yourself about where to get nice-looking dresses with a very reasonable price, come explore the town. Night market is definitely the most prominent spot. Bags, shoes, thongs, hats, dresses, glasses in a vast range of colors and designs are all displayed along the street.

This college town is a smart choice for those who are looking for a truly local life of students in the city. For the sake of its convenience when everything from electronic devices to beautiful landscapes, no student in the city has not heard of the town before. Hence, if you want to learn how to become a true Saigonese, pay a visit to the area. You will not be disappointed! But you have to be very careful if you plan to visit Hồ Đá (the Stone Lake) because this lake is crappy, some spots too deep some too shallow next to each.

Inherently having gained its reputation by a vast choice of food, from local street food to fine dining restaurants, Vietnam has long been known as “Kitchen of the World”. Undoubtedly, food stalls of all kinds can easily be found every 100 meters along the way, and Thu Duc District is no exception.

If you ever intend to live in the area for a little while or just pay a short visit, feel free to take a look at some of the most selected spots by Vietnamese locals.

Cơm Tấm Mầm Đá – Broken rice

Cơm tấm, or “broken rice”, is an iconically age-old and habitual breakfast for South Vietnamese. It is usually seen with a large grilled piece of pork and small sliced pork skin on the top, sometimes served with eggs or grilled chopped meat and used with sweet fish sauce, along with pickled carrots.

Photo via media.foody.vn

“It was over my expectation! I first thought it was pretty normal when I saw it cost only 25.000 for one. But the grilled pork itself was absolutely fantastic. I think I’m gonna come back here again if possible” – said Nguyen Hai.

Address: 778 Phạm Văn Đồng street, Thủ Đức Dist., HCMC
Opening hours: 6:00 – 22:00
Price range: VND ~10.000 – 30.000

Biển Đông – Seafood

Situated on a street named Einstein, an eminent German-born scientist and theoretical physicist, a seafood restaurant called Biển Đông is highly recommended by not only locals but also expat like Paul Blake, an American teacher in Dist. 9.

Saying Dist. 1 is somehow too identical to a Western city, Blake suggested others should try something like beer, seafood, and BBQ in Thu Duc for a new taste. “It is absolutely amazing. Excellent beer can be found here. And I pretty like some coffee shops in the area though!” – Blake stated. If you are still wondering yourself whether or not it can be expensive, let me just say “Absolutely NOT!”.

A group of six may have been charged just more than VND 340.000 with a receipt saying only grilled squid, snails, fish and beer.
