Oxen Racing Festival (Khmer Cow Racing) is often held on the 9th and 10th of Lunar October in An Giang province. The festival is a part of “Đôn Ta” – “Dolta” within Khmer community in Southern Vietnam, especially in Mekong Delta. Đôn Ta is one of the biggest traditional occasions of Khmer people in aim of showing their respects and offerings to their ancestors who departed from life

Photo via static.mytour.vn

After picking up their ancestors’ manes and taking them home from pagodas, Khmer people plait rafts with banana trunks displayed with loads of offerings of all kinds and let them float along some canals or rivers close by. If you ever have a chance to visit this community during this occasion, you are definitely welcomed with open arms. According to Khmer people, guests are considered as passengers appointed by their ancestors to visit their families.

Photo via vietnamnay.com

Apart from the ritual mentioned above, ox racing is another activity that should be taken into account. A flat and wide piece of land covered with a low water level will be chosen, with 200 meters in length and 100 meters in width. Afterwards, they turn over the soil for a few times, so it can get muddy and encompass the zone with hedges. The end of the race is designed with a space behind keeping a safe distance for these racers. Two flags, one in blue and one in red, are plugged 5 meters away from each other at the starting and ending line. Your pair of ox is supposed to start and finish at the flag with the same color.

Photo via sao360.vn

During the race, if any pair happens to fall out of the line, it is going to be disqualified. In case the pair of ox behind fortunately steps over the plough of the ox in front, it will be claimed as the winner. However, the commanders ought to stand firmly in order not to fall off, which is declared as losers.

At the crack of dawn, plenty of people all gather at the racecourse. Even for those who live many miles away, they still bring kitchen accessories along just for cooking and watching at the same time.

“Adventure is worthwhile.” – Aesop.

On traveling to Vietnam, visitors will definitely be amazed by the epic beauty of long blue seashore and mountainous villages. Coming to Phan Thiet, visitors have a chance to admire the rich traditions of local fishing villages and dive into the fresh ocean water. Phan Thiet has many interesting places to go and activities to enjoy as it is one of the hotspots for foreigners.

Visit Fairy Stream (Suối Tiên)

Fairy Stream is one of the hidden wonders in Phan Thiet. Along two sides of the stream are red sand dunes, bamboo forests, and strangely-structured formed white rocks. The stream is ankle-deep and no more than knee-deep even in its deepest parts. Adventurous visitors can also climb to the top of the sand dunes and pitted rock formations, both of which offer spectacular views of red-hued waters and complex stalagmites. For people who feel hungry, there are several food stalls along the way, whereas bars and big restaurants are located upstream.

Address: Huynh Thuc Khang, Ham Tien, Phan Thiet – Mui Ne

Take a Motorbike Tour

Believe me or not, this is one of the top rated outdoor activities in Vietnam for many reasons. Firstly, travelers have a chance to make friends with locals since their rider will be an excellent Vietnamese tour guide who speaks English fluently and knows everything about Vietnam. Secondly, travelers will be driven through Phan Thiet- Mui Ne on a fancy motorbike for as long as you want and the drivers will take you to tourist attractions you want to go and explain things to you if you do not know. Thirdly, the registration for a tour like this is super- easy. You just have to go to their website and make an appointment. On the following days, the tour operator will send you emails as to confirm your registration and appoint you a rider. All you have to do next is to choose the location where you want the rider to pick you up, the length of the tour, etc. The process is easy and convenient. Last but not least, the rider will do everything to guarantee your safety during the trip.

Join Surfing, Windsurfing, and Kitesurfing

Mui Ne Beach draws wind sports worshippers from around the world due to its consistent cross onshore winds. On average it has over 200 days a year with winds of more than 13 MPH. The best for windsurfing and kitesurfing time is from October to the end of March and peak time is in December and January when you’ll see a flurry of activity along the entire shoreline. A stack of kitesurfing schools offer lessons to beginners.

Discover the Beaches and Sand Dunes

Mui Ne, Phan Thiet is famous for the beautiful beaches and extraordinary sand dunes. Besides Mui Ne Beach, Phan Thiet also offers Hon Rom ( Hòn Rơm) beach. It stretches along the Red Sand Dunes and often serves as a harbor for fishermen. It is not regarded as a suitable place to swim since sometimes some dangerous strong tides appear. Đồi Hồng – Red Sane Dune (close to Hon Rom) and Đồi cát Trắng – White Sand Dune (24 kilometers northeast away) are the great sand dunes in Mui Ne. They are both wonderful places when it comes to sandboarding. The renting board price ranges from 10 000 to 50 000 VND depending on the time when you visit (the more crowded the place i and your ability to bargain.

Can Gio Mangrove Forest

During the war, Can Gio mangrove forest was an ideal place to hide from the attacks of the enemies, which sadly led to the American dropping a huge amount of dioxins on the area and significantly damaging the forest, in an attempt to maintain control. Moreover, the forest is dense and used to be filled with a lot of dangerous animals such as tigers and crocodiles. Now the forest has recovered and is protected by the government and international law. With over 2000 years old, Can Gio mangrove forest contains a high degree of biodiversity, including nearly 160 flora species, 137 fish species, over 700 spineless species and 40 vertebrate animal species. As a result, Can Gio is the first mangrove forest in Vietnam to be admitted to the World Network of Biosphere Reserves by UNESCO in January 2000.

Rung Sac Military Base

"Sác" is a Nôm word - a former logographic writing system of the Vietnamese language for mangrove forests on muddy beaches. With an area of 710km, this forest was built as an important base in the anti-French and anti-American resistance of our people since the area has very special natural conditions. Nowadays, Rung Sac Base has become a famous place, attracting tourists to visit. To get inside Sac Forest (Rung Sac), you will have to take a canoe to cross through the Mangrove Forest (as in the picture above).

BEACHES

The southern side of Can Gio faces the sea, which creates a 10km-long beach front. The water here is quite shallow, and a walk far from the shore would be interesting. From the beach, the hills of VungTau are also visible on clear days.

Can Gio has 3 beaches: 30/4 beach, Can Thanh beach and Thot Not beach, all of which are easily accessible and are great places to enjoy the cool sea breeze. If you want to sit in a beach chair there, you have to pay for the seat. The price varies from 10 000 - 25 000 VND depending on the type of chairs.

Thanh An Island

Located east of HCMC separated from Can Gio District, the offshore commune of Thanh An - Thạnh An was once considered an important gateway of the former Saigon – Gia Dinh. The residents here earn their living from mainly fishing, salt-making and oyster farming. That is why there is a large salt-making area in Thieng Lieng hamlet which covers more than 400ha. Thanh An Island is also home to some species of mangroves. In addition to delving into the peaceful life of fishermen around the island, you can take part in kayaking activities to explore the mangrove ecosystem, go fishing and witness them catching seafood. And undoubtedly, the seafood here is really fresh as they are sold right after being taken from the fishing boat. However, at the moment, there are no hotels or motels on the island, so if you want to explore Thanh An island overnight, you can only stay at the locals’ homes or rent a boat to rest.
To reach Thanh An from Can Gio, you can take a boat. From the center of Can Thanh town, drive to Can Thanh ferry. There are 4 main trips at 6 am, 12 pm from the land and 2 pm and 5 pm from the island. Price per turn is 10,000VND and travel time is about 1 hour.

Though the nightlife scene in Can Tho is less bustling than that of Ho Chi Minh City, there is still a lot you can do once the sun sets here. Here are some recommended activities for those looking to have fun in the late hours.

1. Have a drink by the quay

Spend a couple of hours like a local and enjoy fresh fruit smoothies or a traditional Vietnamese coffee. Sit back, relax and watch the hustle and bustle of Ninh Kieu Quay unfold before you. Amavo Cafe is a modern, sleek cafe with a view of the quay, while Kim Tho Cafe offers a rooftop view of the city centre.

Address:
Amavo Cafe: 16 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, Ninh Kieu District
Kim Tho Cafe: 1 Ngo Gia Tu Street, Ninh Kieu District

Amavo Caffe at night – Photo found on the interne

2. Visit the night market

Night markets are a great place to buy some interesting souvenirs, as well as to experience the time-honored tradition of haggling. They also contain some of the most delicious (and cheapest!) food stalls around, so if you are looking for a taste of Southern Vietnamese cuisine, the night markets have that covered. A few markets worth a visit are the New Can Tho Market, An Binh Market, as well as the stalls on 30/4 Street and Mau Than Street.

Address:
New Can Tho Market: Hai Ba Trung Street, Tan An Ward, Ninh Kieu District

3. Mingle with the locals

Can Tho is full of friendly people, so why not go out and have some fun? Bars and pubs are not common here, but are all high-quality establishments. For a nightclubbing experience, XK Club, King Beer Club and V18 Club are jam-packed with young locals, while Iris Sky Bar has some delicious mixed drinks wịth a touch of Mekong Delta flavors, and arguably the best view of the city.

4. Take a dinner cruise

Let a sampan take you around Can Tho as you take in the sights of the bright lights and beautiful colors of this city. Then, stop at Sao Hom Restaurant, one of the most famous dining establishment in Can Tho for an authentic Vietnamese dinner. A wonderful experience all around, and definitely something you must try when you are in this city.

5. Go on a food tour

Can Tho is a city filled with good food, a place where the old intertwines with the new. What better way to explore it than on the back of a motorbike? Hop on a bike with a local guide as they take you around some of the city centre’s hidden street food gems, from fresh nem nuong to local beer and more. Guaranteed to satisfy you in every way. (It’s also super cheap, so the cost isn’t a problem)

An interesting twist on the regular Banh Tet, Bánh Tét Lá Cẩm is rolled with magenta leaves, resulting in a purple color on the cake. Bánh Tét Lá Cẩm’s filling is well-marinated pork, and salted duck eggs (yep, salted duck eggs). One bite, and you get the sweet taste of glutinous rice, the succulent pork and the strong and tasty salted egg. Bánh Tét Lá Cẩm made by the Huỳnh family is regarded as the best in Cần Thơ, and it is available at markets such as Xuân Khánh or An Thới Market.

Ah yes, hotpot. The delicious broth-based dish is considered one of Vietnam’s hidden culinary gems, and many provinces have their own creations on the broth base - so diverse in style, in fact, that it would be unfair to group them under one name. Cần Thơ is no exception. With an abundance of greens, and river-dwelling creatures, the hotpots that are a specialty of this region are all fresh and flavor-packed. The alley on 1 Lý Tự Trọng offers some hotpots that locals love such as Lẩu Cá Kèo (hotpot with mudskipper fish), Lẩu Thái (spicy Thai-styled hot pot), or Lẩu Vịt Nấu Chao (duck and bean curd hot pot) while Lẩu Mắm (Fermented fish paste hot pot) at Dạ Lý restaurant comes with nearly 40 types of fresh vegetables.

4. Nem Nướng Cần Thơ

Nem Nướng, or grilled pork rolls, are a staple of Vietnamese cuisine. And here in Cần Thơ, locals are proud to say that they have their own version of the dish. The pork rolls are rolled with some banh hoi (bundled rice vermicelli) and vegetables into a sheet of banh trang (rice paper), and then dipped in a soy-based sauce. Natives and expats gobble it up, and you will too. Nem Nướng Thanh Vân has long been regarded as the best place for nem Nướng in the city, and a favorite destination for tourists who are looking for delicious nem.

Considered the epicenter of the Mekong Delta, it is not surprising to know Cần Thơ’s other name, Tây Đô – Western Capital. The city is buzzing, vibrant and ever-changing, yet somehow manages to retain the rustic charm of a rural village. You will find yourself lost among the miles and miles of rivers and canals, or perhaps wandering around the sprawling boulevards and hidden backstreets of this city – trust me.

Cái Răng Floating Market is the biggest and most frequently visited floating market in Cần Thơ, while Phong Điền Floating Market is a smaller and lesser-known one.

6. Ninh Kiều Quay

Ninh Kiều Quay is a well-known tourist destination for its scenic location overloọking the Hau Giang river. Have a meal in the floating restaurant, and enjoy Mekong Delta cuisine, or simply take a refreshing night walk along the quay, breathing in the fresh riverside air.

7. Lưu Hữu Phước Park

Named after prolific composer Lưu Hữu Phước, the park is a serene place and a favorite spot for the locals. Wake up early in the morning to see hordes of old women exercise to upbeat music, or observe a game of Chinese checkers. In the evening, children ride ‘kiddie wagons’ around the park, while the youth often have impromptu concerts or practice dance routines here. It is a window into the lives of residents in the bustling city centre.

Vung Tau is a great stop for our journey but it is not the end, isn’t it? There’s no permanent stop for an adventurer. I used to be an adventurer like you, then I took an arrow in the knee. Thus I took a flight to a paradise island and lived there happily for the rest of my life. Just kidding, that whole story has just been made up in my head. However, I’ve experienced a place called Long Hai that could be such paradise I mentioned above. Why? To explain simply: solitude is bliss.

Long Hai – Secluded Private Beach

From a long time ago, Long Hai was well known as an attractive but remote resort area. It recently gains its fame from a few articles about its seclusion but in overall, the town is still less crowded than its nearby brothers. Tourist attractions are scarce but there are many resorts lying alongside the beach not only here in Long Hai, but also Bình Châu, Hồ Cốc, and Hồ Tràm.

I’ve been to Alma Oasis and An Hoa and they are absolutely ideal for a sloth-man like me. Every morning and night I swallowed a great deal of food and then I went swimming, relaxing on the shore and enjoying the sun. That was one of the rare cases which I offer those pools, beaches, and gyms a chance to function.

Here are a few resorts that might catch your eyes:

Besides fancy resorts, beach villas, and awesome beaches, let’s take a look at a few places of interest that you might want to check them out.

Dinh Co Temple

According to historical documents, the original temple was just a simple small shrine, built in the late 18th century to worship a young woman named Lê Thị Hồng. Local residents believe that she was a sacred goddess whose body is drifted to this Long Hai beach. They buried her and made her a small shrine at Co Son Hill. In 1930, Long Hai fishermen relocated the site up to Ky Van hill. In 1987, Dinh Co temple was rebuilt after a fire. In 1995, Dinh Co temple was recognized as the national historical and cultural relic. In 2006-2007, it was renovated due to degradation of building materials. Today, the construction of Dinh Co temple has a total area of over 1000 square meters with ancient architectural designs mixed with modern styles.

It is hard to find such a beautiful green palette like this place, Ngoc Xuong ecotourism site. You can take a seat in a wooden hut built next to a small stream and watch animals herds passing by while enjoying your coffee cup (or almighty coconut!). When I was there, a drink only cost about 15.000 VND and there was no entrance fee.

All these awesome ideas came from a candid and naive farmer whose name is Năm Ngọc. He used to run an orchard here but “got enough of it. I want to try something new.” Unless he started learning some capitalist’s tricks, the place would be still as pure as wild cows’ milk which is not heavily drained.

Minh Dam Guerilla Bases

In the area of Long Hai Townlet, there is Minh Dam Mountain whose length is 9 kilometers and altitude at about 350 meters. The whole mountain with its massive cave system was a menacing threat to France and United States’ soldiers back then since local militias captured the place and used it as an advantage point to ambush them. Initially, local residents called this mountain Thuy Van as the peak is usually embraced by clouds. In Vietnam Wars, this place was renamed Minh Dam in remembrance of two officers whose names are Bui Cong Minh – the secretary of Long Dien District Committee, and Mac Thanh Dam – the vice secretary. During the wartime of Vietnam against the United States, Minh Dam took a critical role as a supply point for Vietnam units and hence suffered sanguinary battles and many intense bombing waves. But those days are over. The mountain is once again replete with bright colored flowers. Minh Dam now becomes an enjoyable historical site for tourists and local residents to learn about the past wars.

There are two movements coexisting here: Modern and Classic. This is not so different from other parts of the city but it is the most conspicuous. By modern, I want to mention those fancy bistros and restaurants. And by classic, they are vintage ones or familiar holes-in-the-wall. Most of the fancy options reside in Thao Dien ward and its nearby neighborhood. However, if stepping outside the familiar zone, you may find many interests awaiting.

La Villa French Restaurant

To visit La Villa restaurant is to “enter a world of true fine dining.” You can either enjoy a spectacular lunch in its outdoor garden or step inside for a refined dining experience. And, to be honest, giving more praises here is just redundant. We have already known that France is awesome with a full course dinner. Before you go, to ensure everything, please consider making a reservation.

This location offers a vintage setting where many western food options are used to please the customers’ eyes plus appetites. Have you ever dreamt about eating a pizza in a tropical forest? It is here! Right here! Overall, food and service are great although it seems the bistro needs to hire more staffs. They have great corners with privacy that I’d love to dip into my books in an entire morning.

Miku Sushi & BBQ

What can a small restaurant that nestles behind Saigon Bridge have to offer? It is the light breeze from the nearby river which cools down the hot temperature of Saigon. It is the enticing sushi and flavored grilled meat. Moreover, this location is like a little hideout for those who do not accustom to bustling lifestyles.

Kokoïs – Cafe Bistro & Store

Kokoïs is a unique mixture of open space design and industrial style which seems quite impressive from the first glance. Its menu is filled with good options including food and drink whose prices are a little bit above average. The service is really good and the staff is attentive. In a nutshell, this is a good stop for a time of relaxation.

Villa Royale Antiques & Tea Room

Let’s sit here and enjoy the flow of time with a sip of tea, shall we? Villa Royale not only offers bold-flavored teas but also many sweet desserts for an awesome tea time. Moreover, as suggested by the name, this whole place is replete with luxurious antiques. It sometimes reminds me times I spent with my grandma cleaning up her longcase clock. A warm pleasure for sure every time I drop by. You won’t be disappointed I am sure!
