Tu Lan Experience 1 Day – Level 1

With your English-speaking guide and local jungle men from the nearby ethnic village of Tan Hoa, you will trek up to 9 km through buffalo fields, dense jungle and have an opportunity to swim through an unbelievable river cave. 

See the immense formations of Hang Chuot (Rat Cave) before trekking to impressive Hung Ton Cave and To Mo Valley. 

You’ll get wet, you’ll get dirty and you’ll enjoy an awesome lunch beside a stunning waterfall. This is a full day of adventure so be prepared! 

This tour is to give you a taste of Tu Lan, but if you really want the ultimate adventure we encourage you to spend the night in the jungle on our Tu Lan Cave Encounter (2 days) or add another night camping in a cave on our Wild Tu Lan Cave Explorer (3 days)!

Phong Nha – Tan Hoa – To Mo – Tan Hoa – Phong Nha 

Start your day with pick-up from your guesthouse in Phong Nha between 7:00 am and 7:30 am (please be ready on time). 

You’ll then drive 70 km over the Da Deo Mountain Pass to reach the ethnic minority village of Tan Hoa and the Oxalis Headquarters. You can leave your entire luggage at our office in the storage room. 

After a safety briefing, checking gear and signing our Release Form, the day adventure begins with a 2 km walk across peanut and buffalo fields to reach the Rao Nan River. 

After crossing the river you’ll reach the impressive Hang Chuot (Rat Cave) to explore its massive formations for 280 m. Then climb over the mountain and trek through Hung Ton Valley to reach Hung Ton Cave. Explore this wild cave by descending a 15 m ladder with a safety rope before swimming 50 m through the cave and following an underground river to reach To Mo Valley, where a delicious lunch will be awaiting you. 

After swimming at the waterfall, trek over Hung Ton Mountain (1 km), across Hung Ton Valley (500 m), and another small hill down to Rao Nan River (500 m). You’ll finish the day crossing back over peanut and buffalo fields (2.5 km) to the Oxalis Headquarters, where a cold drink and shower will be awaiting your return. 

Depart Tan Hoa at 5:00 pm and return to Phong Nha at 6:30 pm and you will be dropped at your guesthouse.

Tu Lan Jungle & Cave Experience is considered easy for anyone who is physically fit and participates in regular outdoor activities, and moderate for anyone with limited outdoor experience. You will trek approximately 9 km via overgrown jungle paths and swim 50 m through a river cave (weather permitting).

Tu Lan Encounter 2 Days 1 Night Level 1

This tour offers a glimpse into the amazing beauty of the Tu Lan area: caves, karst mountains, jungle, and waterfalls.  It is an opportunity to escape civilization and go deep into the rugged and untouched nature of Vietnam for two-days and one-night with a professional English-speaking guide and jungle porter team. This tour is perfect if you are short on time but still want a solid taste of adventure in the amazing Tu Lan jungle and cave system. You will enjoy exploring Ken Cave, Kim Cave, Hung Ton Cave and of course Tu Lan Cave. You’ll also be subjected to a decent amount of trekking with over 12 km of tough jungle terrain covered over the two days and plenty of swimming! 

Once the days adventures are over get ready for a night in the jungle at our amazing Tu Lan campsite located by a beautiful waterfall. You’ll enjoy a delicious BBQ beside the campfire before turning in to the sounds of jungle critters and rushing waters of the nearby waterfall.  With climbing, trekking, and swimming through river caves, this will surely be a highlight of your travels in Vietnam.

Detailed Itinerary 

Day 1: Phong Nha – Tan Hoa – Tu Lan  

You’ll be picked up at your hotel in Phong Nha between 7:30 am and 8:00 am, before venturing off to the village of Tan Hoa, located 70 km away. After a safety briefing and gear check, you need to sign our Release Form before it’s off and away for a full day of trekkingThe trek begins with a 2.5 km march across fields of peanut crops, giant water buffaloes, towering corn stalks, and down to the Rao Nan River. The adventure accelerates with a 30 m climb up a rocky hill to a small jungle opening where you can catch your breath before a 100 m descent in elevation down to Hung Ton Valley. 

Lunch will be enjoyed in the Hung Ton Cave opening and then the adventure picks up again with some serious trekking from Hung Ton Valley and over to Mango Mountain, then back down into Tu Lan Valley (3 km). By midafternoon, Tu Lan campsite will be on the horizon, where swimming can be enjoyed in the beautiful waterfall. Afternoon activities include exploring and swimming through Ken Cave, located next to the campsite, and after that it’s back to camp for a delicious BBQ dinner. Sleep will come easy in comfortable hammocks or tents set up amongst the trees! 

Day 2: Tu Lan – Tan Hoa – Phong Nha 

The second day starts with a hearty breakfast, and more cave exploration. Starting with a brief swim across the river into the heart of Tu Lan Cave System, you will break to enjoy the blue lagoon entrance before making your way 180 m downstream through Tu Lan Cave entrance.  Make your way up to explore the dry part with some climbing and squeezing, at which point you will reach the dry exit and trek a short way through the valley into Kim Cave dry entrance.  Stay for a while to watch out for a natural window in Kim Cave, and you’ll then be off on a swim (450 m) and trek (500 m) through Hang Kim to To Mo Valley. A picnic lunch will be served next to a stunning waterfall by Hung Ton Cave mouth.  Then, you will try to follow a dry path before swimming out through Hung Ton wet cave. Following this is the exploration of a dry passage, and then a trek down into Hung Ton Valley (800 m). Arrival in Tan Hoa is followed by a chance to take in the scenery with a cold drink in hand. Showers are available for those who would like to clean up and change, and then departure back to Phong Nha is at around 4 pmwith arrival in Phong Nha by 5:30 pm (Note: 6:00 – 6:30 pm from November to March)

Tu Lan Cave Encounter is easy for anyone who considers themselves physically fit and participates in regular outdoor activities and moderate for anyone with limited outdoor experience. Please make sure that your health is suitable for these activities, you have some basic trekking experience and you are able to swim before taking part in the adventure.

This adventure tour offers the perfect balance between trekking, caving, climbing, squeezing and swimming, combined with enough time to enjoy two spectacular campsites over three-days and two-nights!  Our three-day trekking and caving adventure includes the very best wild caves of the region including Rat Cave, Ken Cave, Kim Cave, Hung Ton CaveSong Oxalis Cave and Tu Lan Cave!  It is a more challenging experience compared to our Tu Lan Cave Encounter (2 days / 1 night), as you’ll see more of the caves and go much further into the jungle! Get ready for the adventure of a lifetime and one of the most talked about adventure experiences in Vietnam!

ITINERARY

Day 1: Phong Nha – Tan Hoa – Rat Cave – Tu Lan  

You will be picked up in Phong Nha between 7:30 am and 8:00 am at your hotel and driven to the little village of Tan Hoa for your initial safety briefing. Please note that the Release Form needs to be signed before you leave for the jungle. You’ll then set off across sweeping fields for 2.5 km to the Rao Nan River, making your way up to the short hill into Rat Cave. Explore 300 m in Rat Cave with spectacular calcite stalagmites, then make your way back out for a picnic lunch served next to the river in La Ken Valley. 

You’ll then climb 150 m increasing in elevation up Lom Com Mountain.  Keep going through Flat Rock Peak and make your way to Mango Peak on Mango Mountain. After a quick break, the trek continues down into Tu Lan Valley (2 km). You’ll finish your afternoon on a more relaxed note with swimming around the waterfall, followed by a BBQ dinner and singing around the campfire until sleep overcomes you. 

Day 2: Ken Cave – Tu Lan – Hang Kim – To Mo  

The morning arrives with another full day of adventure. Shortly following breakfast comes a swim directly into Ken Cave. After exploring this longest cave in Tu Lan Cave System, you will return to camp for more waterfall swimming, a rest and picnic lunch. 

Post-lunch, it’s a 200 m swim into Tu Lan Cave, followed by a 1.5 km trek to Hang Kim where swimming (450 m) and exploration (500 m) continues before adventuring 500 m through To Mo Valley to the To Mo Cave campsite. Enjoy another beautifully prepared dinner, and camping within the graceful To Mo Valley. 

Day 3: To Mo – Song Oxalis Cave – Hung Ton – Tan Hoa – Phong Nha 

The last day continues to exude adventure and a good balance between trekking and swimmingAt 8AM, after breakfast, you and the team will explore Song Oxalis Cave – a marvelous creature of Tu Lan Cave System. After that, you will get back to the campsite and enjoy some snacks before getting back on the journey. The guide then leads the team to trek and swim 100 m upstream past the waterfall and through Hung Ton Cave via the exit of the cave. Investigation of the dry passage leads to a 15 m ladder climb up to the entrance of Hung Ton.  

Early afternoon holds the return trip across Rao Nan River, the beautiful fields and back to Tan Hoa (2.5 km), where a cold drink will be calling your name. Showers are available for those who would like to clean up and change. The tour returns to Phong Nha by 5:30 pm.

Our Tu Lan Expedition is led by a Vietnamese – English speaking skilled adventure guide, along with a porter team and cooks made up of local men with many years of jungle experience. This skills-based caving adventure provides a highly informative insight into this unique caving region, home to the most spectacular caves and jungle of Vietnam! On this tough jungle and cave trek there is plenty to keep your heart racing with some dark cave exploring, bouldering, climbing and a lot of swimming through the caves. You will also explore extraordinary caves, including Hang Tien Cave – famed for its vastness and magnificent formations. You will not miss the highlight caving activity of the tour – the flying fox. Our secluded jungle campsites are spectacular and mostly different from those visited on our shorter treks in the same region. Extra lighting will be brought in to provide many chances for epic photography. Within 4 days and 3 nights in the wild and one night in cozy comfort at Chay Lap Farmstay, our Tu Lan Expedition will take you to almost all of the explored caves and jungle in Tu Lan area and give you a dose of indulgence at our rural retreat. ITINERARY

Day 1: Phong Nha – Tan Hoa – Secret Cave – Hung Ton Cave – Tu Lan Campsite – Hang Ken  

The expedition takes off with a pickup from any local hotel at Phong Nha at 7:30 – 8:00 am and a transfer to Tan Hoa villageYou’ll attend the safety briefing, check on gears, equipment & sign the Release Form at Tu Lan office prior to trekking. At 10:00 am, the trek gets underway with a hike across peanut and buffalo fields (2.5 km) to the Rao Nan River. 

After crossing the river, the group will go through the first cave of this expedition called Secret Cave at 11 am. The journey within Secret Cave then proceeds forward with a trek to Hung Ton Cave entrance. The journey within Secret Cave and the following trek to Hung Ton will take from about 11:30 am – 12:00 pm. At the entrance of Hung Ton you will take a break and enjoy lunch until about 1:00 pm.  

From Hung Ton, trek through the jungle to Tu Lan Campsite. At camp, you’ll get settled and have time to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee before swimming into Ken Cave to the photo viewpoint where a famous picture of this cave was taken. There will be more time for swimming afterwards at the small waterfall by camp, while our porter team prepares a delicious dinner.  

Day 2: Tu Lan – Hang Kim – To Mo – Hung Ton – La Ken  La Ken Campsite 

Breakfast starts this adventurous day around 8:00 am. Then, the expedition group will see the namesake of the tour, Tu Lan Cave. Visit Tu Lan Dry Cave and abseil down (15 m) into the river passage of Tu Lan Wet Cave with the support of our guide team. You will either swim or boat out of the cave (exit mode depends on season/weather).  

Hang Kim is next, and you’ll enter via the dry entrance, follow the dry passage to the underground river and swim through the cave to exit into picturesque To Mo Valley. We will have lunch here from about 1:00 – 2:00 pm. Then, we will swim into Ton Cave, explore the dry passage and climb up the ladder to exit the cave.  

It takes a further 2.5 hours to trek to La Ken Valley and then you’ll reach the La Ken Campsite (around 5:30 pm) where everyone can enjoy swimming in the natural pools. In cooler weather, you can spend this extra time taking photos of the waterfall and drinking more cups of coffee or tea. Enjoy a fulfilling dinner at around 6:00 pm.  

Page BreakDay 3: Hang Doi – Hung Nhai – Tien Valley – Tien Campsite  

At 8:00 am, the day starts with breakfast ready when you wake up. Around 9:00 am, trek over the hill and through Hang Doi, known as Short Cave or sometimes Bat Cave. This will include a very short swim. When you exit the cave, you’ll see a beautiful waterfall and have time to stop and take some photos.  

At 11:00 am, cross Hung Nhai Valley to the bottom of the hill. Lunch will take place from 12:00 – 1:00 pm near the river. Enjoy its fertile valleys; breathe in the fresh air, and enjoy every moment of it. You then will reach a tranquil magnificent blue lagoon located right in the middle of the jungle surrounded by rocks. This kind of scenery is rare in the world, it makes you wish you could stop the time and live in this moment forever. 

Here you’ll be able to enjoy a refreshing swim, and capture some excellent photos when the sun goes down. Your campsite of the night will be right beside the lagoon, where the mouth-watering fulfilling BBQ dinner prepared by porter team is waiting; this definitely will gain energy for your upcoming exploration of Hang Tien 1 and Hang Tien 2 the following day.  

Day 4: Hang Tien 1 – Hang Tien 2 – Tan Hoa – Chay Lap Farmstay 

Have a big breakfast to gear up for this big, final day of the trek. Hike to the largest cave in Tu Lan Cave System, Hang Tien. Known as Fairy Cave, Hang Tien has two sections and you will explore both from about 9:30 am – 1:00 pm. 

Hang Tien 1 lies beyond a field of boulders and the entrance is magnificent. Rimstone pools are stacked high and add to the magical feeling of this cave. Travel deeper into Hang Tien cave and try our brand new caving activity, the 18-meter-long flying fox. Each of you will be equipped with professional safety equipment such as sit harness, locking karabiners and tandem pulleys. You will pull yourself across the steel cables, as if you were floating in midair. Our professionally trained guide team will support you. This is one of the new exhilarating parts of the tour, enjoy this amazing experience. The squad then keeps on the journey through Hang Tien 1 to its exit and then through Hang Tien 2 before making your way back.  

Lunch will take place on the return through Hang Tien, at the exit of Hang Tien 1. Then the group will proceed back through Hang Tien 1. Trek over the hill to the road where you’ll be picked up and returned to the office around 4:00 – 4:30 pm.  

At Tan Hoa office, you will have time to take a proper shower that you have been waiting for many days, have a cold drink, collect your luggage and be transferred to Chay Lap Farmstay. Check in at the hotel around 6:00 pm, and then enjoy a gala dinner with your expedition team around 7:30 pm. The night will be spent at Chay Lap Farmstay. 

Departure Day:  Transfer to Dong Hoi  

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, take a swim in the pool at Chay Lap, or enjoy Chay Lap water sports center before leaving. We will arrange 2 group transfers from Chay Lap Farmstay to Dong Hoi; the morning transfer is at 7:30 am and the afternoon transfer is at 2:00 pm. Please inform your departure time to your tour guide the night before to arrange transfer service.  We wish you all the best in your onward travels 

* The Tu Lan Expedition is moderate-to-hard for anyone who considers themselves physically fit and who participates in regular outdoor activities, and not suitable for those without trekking experience. Please make sure that you have basic trekking experience, you are able to swim and your health is suitable for these activities.

  • about 800 m swimming in caves (from 100 m – 300 m each cave)
  • Elevation change up to 300 m (between valley and top of mountain – total of 1750m of ascent)

  • 1 night’s accommodation at Chay Lap Farmstay  (single or twin-shared) 
  • Camping gear: tent, camp light, sleeping bag, mattresses, pillow 
  • Caving & safety gear: caving helmet, life jacket, gloves, safety harness, ropes.. 
  • Professional caving headlight (Hope Technology headlights – 1500 lumens) 
  • Photography lighting supports (Hope Technology – R8 3,000 lumens) 
  • Light PVC backpack (if you do not want to take your own, as it will get wet) 
  • Dry bag (for clothing and personal belongings excl. electronics) 
  • Basic canvas trekking boots (only if you do not have your own pair) sizes 36 – 46 
  • Meals: picnic lunch & dinner (day 1,2,3 & 4); breakfast (day 1, 2, 3, 4 & departure) 
  • Gala dinner on day 4  
  • Professional English-speaking tour guide and guide safety assistants 
  • Porter team to carry all camping gear and prepare all meals 
  • Porter team to carry all your personal belongings to camp 
  • Shared dry box for phones and small cameras (limited availability for larger cameras) 
  • Water purifier (used only by guide and porters) and water bottle 
  • Basic camping facilities with eco-friendly compost toilet using western toilet seat 
  • First Aid Kit and Medical Rescue Equipment (application by guides and porters only) 
  • Secure Storage Facility at Oxalis Tan Hoa office to store all luggage you will not be taking on the trek 
  • Transfers from Chay Lap Farmstay to Dong Hoi city center after tour  
  • 1 hour complimentary kayaking at Chay Riverside 

Please also bring with you the following: 

  • 2 long (easy to dry) pants and 2 long sleeved shirt to wear during the trek (quick dry) 
  • 2 pair of shorts and t-shirts to wear at campsite and swim suit 
  • 1 pair of trekking boots/shoes – difficult terrain, good footwear necessary. Gore-Tex/waterproof boots are NOT recommended as they do not drain well (if you prefer your own comfortable pair) 
  • 1 pair of flip flops (sandals) for campsite 
  • 1 medium size towel 
  • 3-4 pairs of calf length densely woven socks (not ankle socks!) 
  • Personal items: mosquito repellent, sunglasses, hat, camera, underwear, toiletries 
  • Shoe pads and thick socks if using Oxalis canvas trekking boots 

Tour excludes: 

  • Travel insurance (you must purchase travel insurance to join this tour, otherwise our team will help to purchase local travel insurance at VND 440,000 for a  4-day trip and you will be billed before your arrival date) 
  • Any additional costs other than those mentioned above; additional expenses may include laundry services, extra food & drink, and additional water sports & river cruises at Chay Lap Farmstay 
  • Tip for guide team and porter team 

If you are trekking in the colder months (February – March) please bring additional warm clothes for the evening and an extra change of long pants and shirt for swimming.
